So I began this whole velvet coat thing in January 2022. Now we're finally starting to see how it's going to look, and I still maintain that taking this much time is worth it.
Flowers v2.0 are going on now, and I'm loving how they look - tell me what you think.
Plus, there's an update on my voice issues... in this video I'm open for the first time on what I sound like on a bad day.
(But it doesn't matter... because no matter how quiet we are, we can let our creative projects be our voice.)
    ** Music **
‘For Want of Means’ by Alfie-Jay Winters
‘Herbal Tea (Instrumental Version)’ by Velvet Moon
‘Who We Are’ by Gavin Luke
‘The Voice of the Father’ by Lama House
‘Moving Towards Fine’ by Amaranth Cove
    ‘Growing Serenity’ by Harper-Rose Peterson
‘Pangea (Instrumental Version)’ by Garden Friend
‘When We’re Old’ by Brett Gregory
    ‘Breathing Again’ by Clarence Reed
    ‘Peaks of Asia’ by Riverworn

Note: I'm doing fine for the most part, don't worry about me. It was a conscious decision to include a "bad voice day" in this video. It's important to me to present something authentic, vulnerable, and encouraging on an Internet so often characterised by negativity and judgement.
It was really useful to film myself speaking like this and observe what I'm doing to myself. Look ma, it's psychosomatic - notice how it comes and goes depending on how stressed/relaxed I am. I'm manifesting some sort of wake up call over here, nbd. The path to healing continues. Thank you for being with me through all the colourful shades of this journey.

It's looking good lass. Someone once said to me any sewing project is 70% hard work, 10% heartache and 20% unpicking. There are days I definitely think she got the unpicking ratio wrong😊

A very good friend of mine taught me years ago an old german saying: "Meister, ich bin fertig, darf ich auftrennen?" - "master, I´m ready, may I unpick?" (she learned it as she was a sewing apprentice). It saved me nerves and kept me enjoying sewing/knitting etc. So yes, your acquaintance got the ratio wrong 😅😅😂😂

In a world where everyone seems to be pushing to do more and more, faster and faster, and tension builds every day as things are careening on, a new video from Cathy Hay is a relief. Life slows. It's ok to take the time to work on a long term project. It's ok to give yourself room to learn and grow. The journey is as important as the destination. Thank you for the monthly boost to my mental health.

This has become my new mantra.. So many people I know are chasing their tails, doing 40 different things (horribly and chaotic I might add)... They are all stressed out and full of anxiety with a bunch of unfinished projects and ideas...I have said...NO MORE...I will do 2 or 3 things well and that's it... My body and spirit can't handle this type of life anymore... And I am better for it.. Thank goodness I came to my senses...

This quilt is hand quilted, you know what that means Ms. Hay? It’s a dying art. The dress is not just your voice beautiful lady, it’s your legacy. I love your voice.

I Live in a caravan in the middle of a paddock that has no address but have an elderly uncle living near by. My sewing practice is to sew when I go down to my uncles to do the washing and keep an eye on him. This gives me anywhere from 2-4 loads of washing to sew through every week and sometimes more. Being out of town reduces my stress considerably and sewing is a way to express my creativity. I try to stick to a routine and chilling out and watching you tube in the evening is part of it. I enjoy watching the progress you make slowly but surely. I love slow fashion and enjoy making some of my own clothes because I hate waste and very rarely buy new. Having a project that lasts several weeks is normal for me and a lot of others who wish perhaps, to do a good job rather than a fast one.

I promise you, the phrase "this is an act of faith in myself" will become a mantra for me after watching this. You do more good than you can ever know. Thank you for celebrating the process; the art; the 'great act of faith'; and for celebrating your authentic self as a woman; for celebrating honesty; and for letting us all learn from you. you deserve a nice glass of tea, chrysanthemum tea with a table spoon of honey if you have it. the combo of the two brings out the natural sweetness. it's quite lovely! The flowers are so precious! They remind me of something from childhood. There was an old flowershop, my family would get flowers and even seedlings there. the owner also made 3d art flower candies. they were flat the stem was made with milk or dark chocolate and food dyed white chocolate for the stems leafs and thorns. the flowers were made from a variety of edible things from marshmellows, and dried fruit that had been cut and shaped into delicate petals. and they looked like little bouquets. unfortunately that store doesnt exhist anymore but after seeing the flowers today being added . they remind me of those candy bouquets

Videos where a project seems to take 30 min vs a series where it can take weeks to months or years is so different when the dopamine hits. When a long term project finishes, it always amazes me how long i have been able to dedicate myself to doing it or watching someone else's dedication.
Thank you for being a creator that shows that a routine of little bits at a time over a vast amount of time can lead to grand places. And that not having a deadline is ok especially in something that should be about the enjoyment of doing that thing.
(Ive been working in my own cross stitching routine of just one length of thread a day. Start with threading my needle and end by burying the thread and an empty needle - its been a hit of accomplishment dopamine every time even when the whole piece will take me years to complete)

Actually, love, your voice quality can be, on some level, a blessing. It lets you know that there is something amiss within yourself that needs to be taken care of. The rest of us may have a less adaptive way of being shown stress: ulcers, heart palpitations, inner demons working themselves out in self-hate. Be kind to yourself and thank your body when the voice goes off. PS, absolutely love the coat!!!

I am a cancer survivor (throat), and I lost my communication skills for a long time. People don't realize how debilitating that can be. So I understand your struggle with your voice issues. I think the worst for me was that people wouldn't take the time to pause and listen. It took too long for me to get things out so they could understand. But this also showed me who cared about me and who didn't.
You're doing great. And as I've always seen in your videos, you will always persevere!

Cathy, when you said that art was good for introverted people it resonated with a line of thought that I have. The thought is that I have a lot of profound emotions which I want to be recognized on a deep level by the very busy people around me.
Art is a way that people can insert our passionate feelings into the lives of people that may not want to give that emotion the time of day, especially when they may not even give their own emotions time. I find that art is one of the most respected forms of expression in this regard, that it is likely people will happily enjoy recognizing my emotionality when it's an artform, and they may even become inspired by it. This provides a healthy relationship involving my artistic expression and high sensitivity.
I love to admire your artistic expression, I value your drive to create content, and I derive strength from you as I cope with my own chronic stress. Thank you for sharing your creativity.
    💖xo emily

Oh Cathy, you never cease to amaze me with your kindness and thoughtfulness. I've been watching you for longer than I can remember and the statement stays true all the same. It was actually the initial reason why; i was a confused teenager and you always seemed to say the right thing in your videos. The "using your craft for your voice" point is spot on, and the kindness of it took me off guard. I am used to thinking of it from an angrier, more desperate point of view. It never really seemed important, it's like what you do when you can't do anything else, the thing you do to not go crazy. I paid a visit once to the former home of Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit. Learned about her while researching for uni. A really regular woman who's had a really hard life: she lived in a village in the carpathian mountains. Brought to Germany during Nazi occupation, walked back home by herself. Built her home by herself. Lived her life by herself bc the village thought her a traitor for being kidnapped to Germany. Made her own clothes, painted, did paper cutouts, wrote a whole lot of books, there's an entire bookcase of them covered in dust and faintly smelling of rot in her house. Learned photography by herself, her pictures of the village life are unique to the time period and the place. Hundreds of pictures - borrowed for an exhibit and sort of lost floating on the way back. She's long gone but every thing that place has screams "hear me, see me", and I couldn't help but feel angry and sad and lost and powerless at her and my behalf because that's what my life's been for as long as i can remember (well, except for the nazi part, haha). Oh fuck me, there's a literal pool of tears on the table now. Best get back to my knitting

I love your slow project(s). There is so much love and detail going into it, and I am always excited to see a new video up from you! I also love it, because it actually realistically shows how much effort goes into sewing. I sew myself, and when I see people show their projects in a fast/compressed way, I always feel like I am way too slow and taking way too long. It stresses me out, makes me enjoy my own sewing less and does nothing for appreciating their work and the effort and the details they put into it. So thank you for taking the time you do and taking uns along your journey. It makes me appreciate the work and the love that make these kinds of things so special sooo much more!

As a kid I had a therapist tell me my throat chakra was where I had trouble, because it was hard for me to speak up for myself (yes she was a hippy-dippy therapist. She got results though). Recently I've learned that in Hinduism, the throat is significant because of a story about Shiva, one of the gods. Shiva drinks all the poison of the world (all the stress) and his neck turns blue! But because he's enlightened, all the poison turns to nectar in his throat and never reaches his heart. Maybe your throat really is doing all the work to protect you from your stressors. Much luck and love to you.

One thing I have adored about this long-term project is how portable you've made something so large, if that makes sense? You have these enormous panels on wooden stretchers that you're taking around the world with you, doing tiny little details each day that are adding up to a monumentally gorgeous work of art. It goes to show that you don't have to make yourself or your work any smaller in order to accommodate things like traveling or the space you live in. And the fact that you are making videos while having challenges with your voice proves that you don't have to make your content smaller because of something you're working with in your life, or in your physical self. An inspiration on many fronts.

Oh Cathy, you are amazing and the voice thing can be very frustrating. Mine goes out at the most inopportune time. My autoimmune disease can make turn into a whisper when I really need it to work. Much love and hugs sent your way. I love what you have accomplished, it looks amazing and you are as well. ❤

I've just been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and my voice is affected sometimes too. It's frustrating when having to talk on the phone more than in person when it happens. It's still new to me, but having followed Cathy for years it gives me a little insight to dealing with it. Hugs to Cathy and everyone with wishes for a good year ahead.

I always love to see another video featuring this coat, because it makes me feel okay with taking my time doing my own projects. Not only the creative ones. I also really enjoyed the part about our creations being our voice. Little me would draw for hours and had so much fun not talking to other people. Thank you for so much feeling, did not see it comming but welcomed it nonetheless

I feel like people don't think about how personal a voice is to someone's identity. Losing your voice or losing control of it feels like losing your ability to communicate who you are. This reminds me of developing a stutter, and that was the catalyst for me to go therapy and deal with seemingly unrelated issues. Working on my issues allowed me to understand myself, and in the process communicating became easier. The stutter comes and goes, and so does halting speech. But it's not as debilitating. Not meant as a suggestion or advice, just as a ruminating on the concept of a voice.

Also, because i knew this is where i was headed if i didn't stop, take a deep breath and walk away from people and things that was causing my mind, body and soul to head into an abyss...😢.....You have my support, love and understanding....

Awww I hate to see you cry but I do understand, from experience, the things that stress or anxiety does to me personally. We are good at limiting stress but I have no control over my anxiety even with meds they creep in. It's hard not to dwell on it or the what ifs? Once I truly get it in my head it is just the anxiety causing it, I can work with it. Today is the best day out of many days. Please, just do you & try not to fret about what anyone else thinks. We don't know until we wake up & speak etc. how the day is going to be. We WATCH what you do and clearly hear that. The tiny flowers are amazing & it truly does help to do these intensive/tedious detail things that help clear our minds. Hobbies are key things for me, even if it is playing a game so I can't dwell on my issue of the day. Hugzzz to you!

Cathy, thank you for your honesty and vulnerability in sharing a hard day with us. Seeing that people we admire also struggle-whether creatively or otherwise-goes a long way toward making folks feel less alone in their own struggles. It certainly helps me to keep things in perspective. I can see why you gravitate towards long term projects: it's like a built-in reminder that struggle is part of the process in art and life, and one bad day-or a bad week, or a bad month-doesn't mean we won't reach our goal.

I really appreciate your choice to show a bad voice day. I have times where I lose my ability to speak--I'm lucky to live with someone who I can simply tell them (via text) "words are hard" and they won't expect me to speak again until they come back. It's not remotely the same, but I do associate these periods with stress.
I just wanted to say thank you--I don't really know anyone else who struggles with speech to the degree I do in my day to day life. I hold so much respect for you, so it means a lot to me to relate to you on this level.
I hope 2024 brings you joy & light as we all take another trip round the sun together.

It took me a year and a half to build a sculpture. I had no idea how to build it when I started or what it would look like when I finished. It evolved as it went, and I did finish it. Didn’t want to build it at times, but I got it done.
