1: shouldn’t have drove into the water
2: the dumb woman should have climbed through the window and swam down and to the side
3: you’re responsible for your own safety
4: swiftwater rescue is open to civilians. YOU go take the class.

This is what happens when federal resources aren't available for fire service the same way they are allocated for police departments. The term fire fighter is a misnomer, we are expected to perform any task to save a life, many times these tasks are complicated and take years to master along with associated certifications and renewals. This wouldn't happen if fire, and EMS with all associated specialties: ( basic, advanced, paramedic, swift water / cold water rescue, confined space, hazmat operations / tech, trench rescue, SAR, high angle rescue, Wildland fire firefighting, ARFF, ....... Were mandatory for all communities in our country. I am a big supporter of police, but when was the last time they had to hold fundraisers to prevent themselves from being shut down? If an officer needs help he calls neighboring communitys, county resources, state resources, or federal resources. If I need swift water rescue and we don't have it in my region or state then my victim is out of luck.

This guy complaining pisses me off so much. Your silly wife should know not to drive when it's flooding. That's on her.
If he really cares about the fire department getting more training, he needs to take it up with local government leaders since they control taxpayer 💰.

a citizen has every right to hold a fire department accountable. Even a volunteer dept. Identifying hazards and preparing for the emergency BEFORE it happens is part of the job description of a firefighter. This scenario should not have been an eye opener. That chief should be able to go directly to whatever elected officials he answers to and say, "See... Ive been telling you for years we needed this funding for swiftwater rescue training"

You wouldn't believe how hard it can be for a volunteer outfit like this to get funding. The department I'm on we have a pretty small building. If you walk inside you will have to go back out if you want to turn around.

sorry sir, sounds like yo wife need the training to not drive in water when she cant see the darn road, why didn't you swim and help her with your swift water training skills. Maybe she should learn how to swim so she does not cost others their lives trying to save her. Just cant stand people who always need to complain.

It’s a little hard to get “training” and resources for something that’s only going to happen every 20 years. Let’s be realistic, they should worry more about Man Bear Pig. 😂

As a firefighter who is also trained in swiftwater rescue I can tell you from personal experience that a vast majority of people we have pulled from vehicles have driven into the floodwaters. Many of those have either removed or driven around barricades to access these floodwaters. IMO, though, every single fire department where a flood has occurred in the past 100 years should have at least basic swiftwater rescue training. I understand a lot of smaller and more rural departments have budgetary constraints, but at least have the training to know what you can accomplish and what you cannot/need to request mutual aid. I also wonder - does this department not have a ladder truck? As a last resort, we had to use a ladder truck to make a rescue during Hurricane Ida when conditions prevented our boat from accessing the victim.

Im a Volunteer Swiftwater technician in the german life saving association. Most Fire dept. We specialise in Waterrescue from diving over boats to SRTs. We get called when ever there is an incident with water involved, becaus most fire dept. in our Area are not trained or dont have the equipment for it. Maybe, it would be a solution, to establish a e. g. county wide Special response Team for such incidents. Than several depts. can come together and the costs are lower.
My Organization is the largest Waterrescue organization in the world but still mostly on volunteer and donation based. We recieve very little government based founding but still getting called for local emergencies, civil protection (nation and EU wide) and many more things.
