    Well done Blizzard - I'm finally interested in Old God lore again! The lows of Patch 8.3 are slowly being made up for by new plotlines, including Azshara's return, Xal'atath, the source of Galakrond's corruption, and the wild timeline confirmation we gave N'zoth in Dragonflight 10.0!

    I think the one problem Blizzard cannot now ever get out from under is WoD and the many timelines with the possibility of an entity transcending them (the legion). If we go to a future or timeline where Azeroth is corrupted, then that means the void wins in every timeline. They only needed one corrupted titan to unmake creation. So, Azeroth is already lost in timeline 20438485 (and if we are talking infinite timelines in an infinite amount of other ones too). What is the point of fighting any of this in that universe? The whole transcending timelines idea was the worst thing they could have ever done.

    • @matthewgagnon9426
      @matthewgagnon9426 Год назад +16

      It didn't even make any sense back then either. How could the Burning Legion transcend timelines? If it did, why wasn't there more plot revolving around Kil'Jaedan and Archimonde going "wait, we did this already. Didn't we do this already? What the fuck is going on?"

    • @stormstrider1990
      @stormstrider1990 Год назад +5

      Well, they seem to have retconned the Legion transcending all timelines- part, since it turns out that too was Afrasiabi's fucked- up idea. So I wouldn't worry about the Void winning, as long as we keep beating them in our main timeline.

    • @NOLA-vv3sz
      @NOLA-vv3sz Год назад +4

      @@stormstrider1990 Have they yet though? I always thought the Legion transcending was the dumbest thing I ever heard either way, but I did not know they pulled it back. Though, there is a question though of why a timeline with a void corrupted Azeroth would not simply destroy its own timeline and then just hop to another one to destroy that one. Being able to bring the lightforged back to our space is another mess.

    • @DrewPicklesTheDark

      As soon as WoD introduced time/interdimensional travel things were fucked. I have always hated when time travel and such is introduced to a franchise unless it's entirely self-contained (Which the CoT did well enough), or the franchise revolves around it as the central plot point. As much flak as pandaland got for "harhar Kung-fu Panda" it's lore is much more solid than WoD or any of the stuff that came after.

    I much preferred the very old lore where there were no Void, just the Burning Legion.

    • @DrewPicklesTheDark
      @DrewPicklesTheDark Год назад +3

      That was nice. I didn't mind the introduction of the Void initially since it gave the Legion an actual reason to exist besides mustache-twirling, however I think they have gone way overboard with it. Sargares should have remained the big bad, just because there is another villain(s) that he deemed a big enough threat that he was willing to do what he did, doesn't mean he's suddenly "not so bad" or a "good guy". The Burning Legion destroying planets before the Void can corrupt them I think was a good path, the Legion is still the ultimate bad since they are literally destroying everything, where as the Void is merely corrupting it, but the Void's existence gives a method to the Legion's madness. It's not unlike the purging of Stratholme. Arthas was the villain for slaughtering most of it's population, but his reasoning wasn't exactly wrong either. Nobody called him a "good guy" or "not so bad" once he turned to darkness, merely because he opposed the Legion. Sargares would have been the same. The Void could have strengthened the Legion's story, but the writers opted to throw the Legion out in favor of it.

    This makes me wonder what the original purpose of the titan facility under the Tomb of Sargeras was. Back in the day, N'Zoth and Y'shaarj fought a battle there. Then, the titans built a mysterious titan facility on the same site. Then, Aegwynn found it and used it to imprison the Avatar of Sargeras. It was also claimed to be "an ancient source of power" which is why the Night Elves built their temple of Elune on top of it.
    Was it a titan prison for an entity of the Old Gods that was later set free? It does certainly look like a prison, and I doubt Aegwynn remodeled the place just so that it would suit the Avatar of Sargeras.

    • @BellularGaming
      @BellularGaming  Год назад +24

      You know, this stuff didn't really find room in the video because it got way too complicated, but: Xal calls Elune "a great enemy" in Tomb, and when the Priest attempts to absorb Elune's lingering power, they're killed. The upstart 'goddess' and all that. Was Xal originally imprisoned here? Is she somehow a dark aspect of Elune, or her opposite? Does that even make sense?
      K'Tanth, and the mysteries of the Temple of Elune, are probably really important to mull over, though we don't have enough to draw conclusions.

Odyn’s troops being unable to conquer it and then him demanding any mention of it be erased seems pretty fitting to the idea.

    Stuff like this is why it's so hard to engage with Warcraft lore. Retcons and this feeling that they're desperately grasping for new BIGGER plot threads to make players feel very scared of the loot pinata for the next expansion. It's getting to a stage where a lot of Roleplayers just flat out ignore the newer lore where possible because a lot of this stuff would otherwise contradict and harm their own characters development over the last nigh-on 20 years.
    WoW needs a genuine, proper world building bible. Something akin to the RPG books but of a more consistent quality and rigid lore (Those books, while tonally amazing, have a LOT of stupid mistakes and ideas in them. I do recommend giving them a read though). Chronicles was supposed to be that and now it's all but worthless. Relegated to nothing more than a falible perspective so they can warp, chop and change the lore to magic hat more threats into existance.

I'm thoroughly convinced that Blizzard would do something this stupid given that Thrall's Horde right down to the happy slaves is an unintentional analogy to the Lost Cause Confederacy myth.
    The Void represents constant change, just as the light represents continuous stability. There can be no good results from either of those realities. The only thing good is found in the merging of the two. Change needs to be tempered by stability to create good living conditions and stability needs to be affected by change to evolve else it becomes stale and corrupted.
    WoW more and more becomes "world-building that people think is kewl!" The writers fully uncritically make world-building and never think about what already exists. So, they just make new shit instead of revisiting things that when looked at critically is really really bad writing.

Considering he was said by everyone to be the strongest of the five, I doubt his involvement is done as well. Sleep and Death seems to be one and the same to Y'shaarj. This has got me thinking, if Xal'atath is made from a claw of Y'shaarj then would that not make her a subordinate to him? Could she be actually working to wake up/bring him back in some form? I'd rather see the second rise of the Black Empire with seeing Xal'atath making a deal with her kin to revive them all seeing the Black Empire at full force with N'zoth, Yogg-saron, C'thun, and Y'Shaarj perhaps even a deal with a lesser cousin of G'huun returned by the fifth Old God Xal'atath herself. Seeing the Mantid, Aqir, and Nerubians making a move. Possibly with a looming threat that both the Void Lords trying to peer into our world and even one of the Old Gods serving as a Beacon after their defeat, a beacon to call other Old Gods from other worlds to come to Azeroth, or their extensions to come.

      Doesn't really account for N'zoth's own plans paying off though. We're 95% sure N'zoth set up the events of BfA so that he'd profit either way, and we have yet to experience that payoff. Xal'atath devouring him instead would be kind of anticlimactic.

    As Bell puts it so eloquently in the last part of the video, I'm calling it now: The ancient one is Azeroth, having absorbed the Old Gods, becoming an impossible nightmare in the process. There are no more old gods left because their whole purpose was to corrupt her. Once the goal had been reached, she simply devoured them in turn.

  • @kagenaga
    @kagenaga Год назад +2

    Azeroth being the Ancient One is the theory I originally came to myself, but I think from a story building perspective, having Xal'atath (or K'tanth) being the Ancient One would probably give it more longevity.

      They could throw it all sideways by having "The Ancient One" be either _The Master_ or _The Primus._ It wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility that an ancient from the realm of death is hungers for life. _The Master_ especially would have reason to team up with the Void against the Light.

Because what ramifications will that have? Now N'zoth knows Xala'tath kills him. Did he he perhaps allow this because he had already foreseen it (on the assumption that the timeline is fluid - all of N'zoth's actions up to our point is because we had already gone back in time... time mechanics are screwy to me)?

    I'm ever more certain that Azeroth *is* the equivalent to Lovecraft's Azathoth.
    Both are 'slumbering', 'sleeping'..
    Azeroth is the focus of everyeone's attention due to its power, just like Azathoth is the most powerful entity in the Cthulhu Mythos.
    "According to Lovecraft, reality is Azathoth’s dream, and when it/he wakes up the “true reality” asserts itself and the one we know of ceases to exist. The “true reality” is assumed to be something that no human, sane or otherwise, would understand. And that it really wouldn’t matter because no human would exist anyway."

I'm not sure what those things were, but the covenants AND the Zerith Mortis brokers considered them invaders, not native to anyone (even discount Thanos wasn't a fan of them). And their only goal was to consume whatever they could get their (mouths?) on. Much like Galakrond consuming whatever he could munch on.
