But if you've seen the show Archer, you should be able to see AC emulating his demeanor rather fittingly well lately. I can atleast but that could just be me.
The irony, IMO, of the "1st Hundred Yards" or whatever being modeled after something from WW2, is that if a WW2 vet saw this, they would try to force choke whomever thought this was a brilliant idea. Now I was one of the late entries, I was 25 when I went in. The DIs didn't scare me, but that wasn't the point of the shark attack anyway. It was to keep you moving, trying to do impossible tasks, to impossible standards, and impossible time limits....that's basically what most of BCT was. The only time you "won" was when the entire PLT worked together and even then you still got smoked because you didn't meet time or standards...you just got smoked a bit less. That's like the whole point of leaving Red Phase, was you were slightly less useless and now actually learning infantry shit.
Some will say that you don't need all of that to build a soldier. No, you don't need that to teach someone how to shoot a rifle or march in sync. You need that to build mental toughness into people that most of the time don't have it because they're fresh out of HS. THAT is what separates us from everyone else and that is what we rely on in combat. Everything else is important, but the best marksman in the world, without the ability to handle stress and his fear, won't amount to shit in a firefight. #makerecruitsafraidagain

I know for the Navy, I had to go through boot camp after transfering from the Army. But that makes sense from a training stance. You learn how to dig fox holes and conduct patrols in the Army. You learn to handle lines and fight fires in the Navy, so it's a little different.

I didn't even realize I was rewatching a video, until I saw my own comments below it. Anyway, new day, new comments:
I have a character for you: "100% Man!"
I worked on engines on a ship. That's what I did. But I ripped up my back and my shoulder while doing it. Both injuries were permanent and progressive. In other words, there was nothing I could do that would change the fact that they'd stay with me, and get worse throughout the course of my life.
So, over the years, as the injuries got worse, my rating increased. I turned 50 last year, and I honestly cannot walk without pain anymore. So, my rating finally reached 100%. The SECOND it did, I turned into royalty down at the VA. I mean, at 100%, you are like the king of that place.
What is funny about it is the fact that I am WAY more important now, than I ever was while serving. I was just an E-4 mechanic, when I got out and went to college. Now I am treated like I caught Osama all by myself.
There IS a character that is funny in that, and I KNOW you guys can write him to full comedic effect!

Also, I was infantry and we had the ability to fight the people we got in arguments with in the back woods. If you hated someone you could throw punches until you remembered that you were all on the same team. Worked great.

34 year old former Navy Nuke, current AF reserve cyber operations guy here. Two of the least physically demanding military career fields possible. If I can comment critically on any fitness standards, or the "toughness" of the modern training pipelines, you know something has gone critically wrong...
I retrained through Keesler AFB as a 32 year old E5 after a nearly 10 year gap in service between branches. I was shocked to see kids right out of boot camp struggle to do basic calisthenics and complete a 5k run...in any amount of time.
After tasting a purple monster energy drink for the time, offered by the ridiculously well appointed AF school house, I commented to the class at large that it "tasted like smashed asshole". The class literally gasped. Collectively. Apparently NCOs are not supposed to swear now? I was verbally counseled by an E7, as an E5, for saying "smashed asshole"...
I get it, wars are being increasingly fought on the digital battlefield. Drone operators and keyboard commandos and the like are often front and center these days. Having higher physical / toughness / resiliency standards are detrimental when it comes to attracting people with critically needed skillsets who often spend their lives behind a computer screen, especially when they can "join" as a contractor and make double the money right out the gate, with no fitness standards and never having to take even a single ounce of shit from a superior.
I don't know what the answer is, but I am of the opinion that physical weakness and mental weakness often go hand in hand. My current "civilian" job involves the forensic analysis of firearms / fired evidence components. I work on guns and stare into a microscope for several hours a day. Being somewhat fit helps me focus and think, even in my relatively sedentary job. Also. if there's one thing you learn being a Navy Nuke, it's how to be made fun of by literally everyone and develop a thick skin. That thick skin builds confidence, which is super critical when it comes to every facet of life. In my personal opinion, the military needs to strike a balance between putting bumper pads on everything, and full on supporting a brutal "eat your young" culture (excepting maybe SF fields where the stakes are obviously higher). It's definitely possible...
I 100% saw the progression to a "kinder, gentler" army unfold before my eyes. I went to OSUT with Delta 2-54 in 2013, and gladly got to experience what i felt like was a typical basic experience. Got shark attacked as soon as we showed up, smoked for every blunder, the bays got tossed with every minute mistake, etc. But there was a new cycle in the next unit over that came about a month after we got there, and no shit... They had their phones on a weekly basis. I don't ever remember seeing or hearing them get smoked. And I swear to christ they got pizza ordered at least once a month. We would come down to form up for whatever, and they'd be chilling in the BN footprint like nothing was up.

I know this is 3 years old, but fun fact: the guy who played GySgt Carter in the television show "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C," Frank Sutton had been in the U.S. Army during WWII. He initially tried to enlist in the Marine Corps, but they rejected him...wait, the Marine Corps REJECTED him (okay, that's better) due to his color blindness.
The Army accepted him, and he was deployed to the Pacific theater, where he was subsequently awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.
Gives new meaning to that Marine saying "Army stands for Ain't Ready for the Marines Yet."
Apparently, the Marines weren't ready for Sgt. Frank Sutton.
