Is This Game About Beans "The Best Card Game Ever"?

- It’s the beans game - and a review that’s something of a cursed chalice for team SU&SD - a filming session where seemingly everything went wrong based on half a script excavated from a Google Drive. Bohnanza is a game near and dear to Tom’s heart, and hopefully this fully unhinged first half and ponderous second makes for a compelling case as to why this horrible yellow box deserves a spot in your collection.

Nice to see Tom is just a normal human bean.
And a real hero!
"Get Out."
*points to door*
Just like tou and me
And remember, Gary loves you
ligma beans.
Booooooooo lol
Finally a SUSD video that doesn't cost me any money because I already own the game.
I got it for my birthday, literally the day before this video came out!
One has to wonder if Uwe ever imagined that videos like this would be getting published decades after he came out with his game about Beans.
It predates RUclips by about 8 years, so probably not?
No, he knew.
@@afaulconbridge yeah but it does not predate videos
Is the reason we haven't seen Quinns for awhile that he's trying to kick his Bean habit?
For those, that don't understand the games title: Bean is "Bohne" in German.
I had a guy in one of my early-in-the-hobby gaming groups lament once, "You know, it feels like they really missed a chance to name the game "Beananza."" I was very gentle with him.
and in Dutch as well
@@adamhunt7892You know, it really seems like they missed the chance to print the English version of this game as Beananza
@@Nick-dc6ix This
Tom's surrealism reaches new peaks at 9:45 where he describes the experience of having three friends.
This is a traumatic game for me. I once played a single game for several hours because players would not pass turns but instead beg for the same bean for half an hour.
I sincerely hope you don't still play with that bean brain
Excellent use of passive voice here, you avoided saying 'we' the whole comment
@@Shoitaan not with that person and certainly never again drunk on a metal fest
My game like that is Sherrif of Nottingham. At some point you just need to take no for an answer and move on lol
@@bradleyforsyth7990 There really is no game that can't be ruined by playing it with the wrong person. We've all got a story like that.
0:40 they had to cut RIGHT before Tom broke out laughing but you can still see the corner of his lip curl up JUST before the jump, I love it lol This was one of the best episodes in a LONG long time.
If I had a nickel for every SU&SD review that ended with Tom cracking open a can of beans, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Matt's texts to Uwe Rosenberg omg 😅😂💀
How did you get this number?
The best part of the video lol
10:32 "26 years! This game is older than me!"
*thirtysomething lower back pain intensifies*
I don't know if it was like "the best editorial choice to make", but the fraction of a moment of Tom starting to break after saying "getting absolutely fucked up on beans" is beautiful.
Tom Brewster is becoming too powerful. Nobody on the team seems to have editorial control over his scripts. His editing skills seems to be going both forwards AND backwards in time simultaneously. He is powered by beans, and cannot be stopped.
So happy for Tom that he finally got to talk about beans.
Bean is the cat my wife had before we moved in together (mine were Ghost and Shaq). Bean likes me alright but is more her cat. He thought you were calling him this entire video and is very affectionate right now.
So many genuinely laugh out loud moments - love that SU&SD will go back and address the classics that are still relevant today. Kudos to all involved.
One of my favorite games. My wife and I made up an epic custom deck that we use with our friends and family. 7 new bean types; Vanilla Beans, Butter Beans, Pinto Beans, Jumping Beans, Kidney Beans, Runner Beans, and Rice Beans. We also have house rules for Sun cards, Rain cards, Magic Beans, Field Beans, Picks, and Weeds.
Definitely Uwe Rosenburg's best game about beans.
The editing style of these recent Tom videos is so up my alley.
Bohnanza is a great game. Got my first copy 20+ years ago and we still go back and play it.
A classic I've played for years. You might say I've...
*bean* there, done that.
The fact that "beans" is street slang for fentanyl makes this review so much better.
You manage to one-up yourself each video with how unhinged they get, well done.
Love the Requiem For a Bean outro.
New drinking game
Make some friends see the first minute of a Tom review, they must guess what kind of product he is reviewing. For every wrong answer, everybody drinks.
RIP 😅
Unfortunately my friends know me and board game would be among the first 3 answers for sure
having [bottom text] in that graphic absolutely sent me
At 3:18 , vacuous man couldn't have removed the Soy Bean, because the game has a strict leave-single-beans-alone policy
Easy to miss. Played the game for 3 years before we re-read the rules and realized you couldn't do that. We also missed the no re-trading beans rule.
Thank youuuuuuu for showing this game, this is one of my fiancee's and me favorite games, it is absolutely hysterical to trade with beans, and they have the most ridiculous in spanish too which makes into some incredible serious trading with the most out of pocket naming "Dame 2 judías colorás por una pocha ahora mismo!"
Bohnanza is my groups’ absolute favorite. If you play with the same people the meta that develops is outta control fun. Joe always spams the Red Beans! Don’t let Mary have the Greens! So fun
Bohnanza is unironically one of my favorite games, glad you finally covered it
Same. It's a real masterpiece. It simultaneously scratches the itch for a fun party game that's an engine for socialization and something a little crunchier. I honestly can't think of another game that sits in that niche - at least not one that does it nearly as well. If BGG users had friends and liked to have fun, it would be in the top 25 there instead of the low 500s.
What are some of your ironically favorite games?
I've bean looking forward to catching up on SU&SD videos, but I have to make a toast to the continued quality of your videos. The text messages shown for like two seconds had me and the meta joke of explaining a game you've never played is top notch. So many quality moments in this review.
This is incredible. If doing homages of Brass Eye is the new direction, I am 100% for it. Amazing work Tom!
It is now 1:30 AM, I need to go to bed, but now I have a craving for beans. Which I don't have.
I hope you're happy, SU&SD.
I hope you're happy.
This review has bean a long time coming and was absolute genius such an entertaining delight
Shut up and sit down is one of the very few channels that can get me to actually audibly laugh and smile at their stuff. Normally it's just a strong exhale thru my nose in amusement.
I have always loved Tim's reviews. Though this was his last, I can confidently say it was one of his best.
Bohnanza is my all time favorite game! Thanks for doing a review of it!
"The rest, remains unclear" --- my personal fav. Nobody can stop Tom the Train (actually the Engine).
Don't think I'd ever get to compare a game review to a Monty Python's Flying Circus skit, but here we are.
"Add beans to any meal, and it becomes gourmet!" - My Uncle David from the UK. He said this when he served me a microwave pizza from Tesco, and put beans upon it.
Tom throwing out some instant classic buttons on his videos. "He died of smoking beans" is immediately iconic.
Love Tom's willingness to get surreal and strange.
This game is so unassuming and so great. A real treat! I think even if "negotiation" is not your usual cup, you still have a chance of enjoying it -- you will get sucked in by the puzzle of fixing your un-orderable hand so you can bean all the way to the bank.
I'm so glad I didn't stop the video after the outro
This is my new favourite susd video, great work tom!
What makes this game even better is that in German the names of the blue and green beans are puns, although the translation team did a good job
This is so silly. And so good. Great work, guys :D
A classic game that I will never turn down.
I love these reviews of classic games like Bohnanza and Modern Art.
The humour here is approaching Chris Morris levels of surreal and unsettling majesty!
YESSS [slightly unhinged] Bohnanza coverage! We love this game over here! Hilarious stuff. - G
The state of my current version (~20yrs old) and the inclusion of a signed postcard of Uwe Rosenberg makes the 25th aniversary edition a pretty tempting prospect.
Bohnanza is probably the game that got me into the board and card game hobby.
This looks like a really fun game! I particularly enjoyed the bean skits.
I can vouch for what Tom says. Everybody loves this game - except for the occasional sour puss. It's in a sweet spot of being a great vehicle for a group to have laughs and socializing while also having an edge of crunchiness to it. It's both a party game and a middle-weight hand management game. Plus it's a small, easy to store box and -- at least a decade ago -- was pretty cheap. All-in-all, it just has a remarkable ROI.
People should note that Bohnanza is from a generation of German family games/strategy games that were very different from modern euros and family games. Not only were they much more accessible and rules light but the emphasis was on player interaction and player engagement. Bohnanza is an excellent example. For more like it people should research games that came out from 1995-2004 (the Catan era)
One of the greatest Thumbnails.
i have been waiting MONTHS for this!
About 312 months or so?
I laughed. I cried. I lived. 10/10 beans,
One of the best trading games around. The way you are FORCED to plant (so asymmetry of desires is heightened) is genius.
I'm the Boss is my other fave.
I’ve bean eyeing bohnanza for years. Thanks for fertilizing my interest?
If you thought that by now this game would be a has-bean, you kidney bean more wrong!
Delightfully unhinged. Would bean again.
I really enjoyed this. I already own the game, but you sold it well. I might have to get that 25th anniversary edition for the seventh player and extra beans!
this goofy. love you guys.
Loving the Brass Eye Style to this
Matt wearing a La Dispute Beanie makes me very happy. It takes a certain special kind of person to appreciate and feel that music 🖤
This review has almost the perfect amount of beans humor. The perfect amount of beans humor is "more beans humor" so to achieve that, you'd need an infinitely long video. But you really made a showing here.
Tom I don't know if it was intentional. But after saying getting absolutely *****ed up on beans. Letting the shot go a few extra frames to show your facial expression changing from serious to the early stages of laughter was gold for me.
Well, I love games, and I love beans, so it seems like this is a game for me ^^ thank you very much for reviewing it :D not only a fun review, but seems like a genuinely fun game :)
Laughed out loud at the ending!
So glad this got made. I love this game and it was a joy to watch Tom enthuse about it. (Matt was there too.)
(Matt was also great)
Surprised to hear the dig at the artwork, I've always found it charming!
Only Tom could make "roll 'em if you got 'em" relevant in a card game.
Glad that my favorite board game content creators are decent human beings. Imagine being an NRB fan and hating on SUSD lol. Good thing we came out on top.
My player glitched and skipped from 3 minutes in to the end and I was genuinely like "oh they forgot to review the game as some kind of bit"
Thanks for this amazing video. Made my day
That was the best Tom video I've ever seen.
Wait, a La Dispute poster? I didn’t know I could love you even more!
When a friend asks you how you've been, and you freeze up like a deer in the headlights, you might be Bean-Brained.
Bohnanza is a classic, and still the best example of a fun accessible trading game that I know.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY!!! BEANSSSSS!!!
So... I love SUSD videos - they are one of my favourite RUclips things to watch. when I looked at the homescreen and it was _Tom_ and he was reviewing _Beans_ - I was so excited. Beans has been a family favourite for years ... and everyone knows Tom loves himself a bit of Beans and is _really_ good at talking about games. Finally, we can have a erudite and enthusiastic reviewer explaining why newbies would love this crazy trader. I can send to all my non-gamer friends - and see if I can whip up some enthusiasm for legume based play. We all know it's a gateway to so much more boardgamey action.
Just as long as he doesn't take a sweet family trading game with (admittedly terrible) childlike art and turn it into an extended drugs metaphor with characters dying from overdoses...
.... oh... he did....
...still - love everything else you've done, Tom!
Love the ludicrous commitment to inventive framing that harkens back to OG SU&SD (sadly minus the indie soundtrack, but I know you guys aren’t made of licensing fees)
The post video ad I got was for LL Bean. I wish I was kidding.
Truly, Tom is a real human bean and a real hero
I’ve hurt my face from trying not to laugh and wake up the person napping across the room (completely exhausted from helping me unbox and set up Gloomhaven. I am not joking). We should have just gotten some beans.
Love the video to bits. Much deserved. Now Tichu!!
Great video guys!
I like this game. I’ve never had the opportunity to play this without a “futures” variant of some sort.
this has got to be one of the most unhinged board game reviews you've done. up there with the Button Shy one
Awesome! I hope this opens up the gates for more classic reviews.
So wait, I just went to go read the rules for this version, and I see there is no rule for paying three coins to get a third bean field. You just straight up start with this third bean field in 3 player game, and two bean fields in 4+ player games with no option of buying a third. I guess cause it was always a poor decision to get a third field in 4 player and up games?
Getting big Brass Eye vibes from that opening... Love it
Brilliant channel. And good Beans
Super pumped y'all finally reviewed this game officially! 10/10, though definitely missed Quinns consistently saying "Bohnanza" as if it baffles him
Love Bohnanza. I always pull it out as an option for a shorter game. Especially with 5 or more
Awesome! My beaning days are over, tries to sleep most nights now.
This game is fun but is 100% depending on NOT having THAT GUY at the table. The one that has a 10 min turn and makes your turn 5 min longer and four others players too...
It is staggering how well the first 1 minute and 21 seconds can be directly ripped out of this video and applied to the current state of the Modern format in Magic: The Gathering.
Tom if you need help, it is available. No one needs to suffer in silence with bean addiction. Or otherwise known as Beanddiction.
Would love to see a video of every weird alternate version of bohnanza. Bohnaparte looks funny.
Love this game!
