  • I walk you through the whole process to changing out your impeller. This boat that I am using is a 1999 Ski Nautique with the Ford Pleasurecraft (PCM) 5.8-liter engine. Many models and engines may have a similar set up like this engine.

    Dude you are legit the best. I have '99 Ski Nautique open bow with GT-40 engine. Did the oil change, fuel filter, and impeller this morning - so easy thanks to you! The engine placement must be different between the open and closed bow versions. The front of my engine was more prominent and exposed as compared to yours. The screws to get the impeller out were easy to access on my engine.

    Just changed mine yesterday (‘99 Air Nautique). Two tips I would recommend. 1) remove the hoses. This will make the reinstall so much easier! Otherwise keeping screws, key, o-ring and gasket in place while lining up the two sides of the housing in a restricted area is quite challenging! 2) bind the fins of the impeller with a zip tie when inserting the new impeller. Clip the zip tie once partially inserted then fully insert. This will allow you to position the fins in the same direction and help position the impeller better centered.

    Don't grease screws - bad idea. Don't put a a 2nd gasket between the brass plate and the pump body - that's what the o-ring is for ! And absolutely use soap on the impeller for eas of installation and so the impeller doesn't run dry when you first start it up. And isn't it easier just to remove the entire pump assembly (disconnect at the hoses) so you can actually inspect the pump for problems and get to the screws?

    • @92813justin
      @92813justin  5 лет назад

      It’s pretty difficult to take those hoses off and take the hole impeller. I use just a little marine grease because I’ve had to cut screws off of this boat because they have welded together because they were all rusty. Any other ideas on that? Good idea with the o-ring.

      Seller Seller Exactly. I’ve been doing this since the 70’s, and it’s a lot easier, and better, to remove the pump and pulley in one piece. There are all of 2 hoses that have to be removed, and that’s a piece of cake.

      @92813justin  7 лет назад

  • @billsmathers3021
    @billsmathers3021 4 года назад +1

    Nice job but I would recommend removing the pump completely. If you have a problem getting water hoses loose use a hose removal tool. (Large Hook Scribe like tool). Then you can inspect housing for any problems and use liquid soap on impeller installation so you do not have a dry rotation on first start which can actually damage your impeller. Thanks for the video

      @92813justin  4 года назад

      bill smathers very cool, I’ll have to look into a tool like that because those houses are welded on there. That’s why it’s easier to just do it with it on the engine.

    I know this video is over a year old but just a couple suggestions for those who are going to replace an impeller in this type of pump. Pay attention to the gasket placement and the brass plate when you take yours apart. The kits are universal and come with several different gaskets that you won't need. Use white grease on the impeller prior to installation (this helps going in and it helps to get the pump to prime on that first start. And, always spin the impeller in the direction of rotation when installing it in the housing, if the tips of the impellers are facing the wrong way on first start I've seen brand new impellers destroyed and the first sign that something is wrong usually leaves you out on the lake with an overheating engine. Just my 2 cents worth and oh yea, put an extra one in your boats glove box.

    You’re doing it the hard way dude. Loosen the hose clamps and pull off the hoses. Now the entire pump and pulley is free. Good video, I'm pretty handy and can follow it.
    Question: I have twin merc 190hp. Will I have change for both? I recently had an incident where recently my engine started to overheat on the passenger engine side ( not sure the exact term) and started smoke. But I immediately killed the engine, but it was probably like like 1 minute running like that or less, but do you think I have to change both or do I really only have to do one. It was only on one engine. Fyi, it's still on the water and appears I can change it on the water.

    • @dciimho2798
      @dciimho2798 5 лет назад

      Hey Josh, I'm not familiar with the twin merc system but if the two cooling systems are not co-mingled you'll probably only have to fix the port side pump. I would guess that the two systems are separate otherwise the starboard engine should have prevented the port side from overheating and I think it's meant to do just what it did. One engine drops off and you've got one good one left to get you back to shore. Redundancy.

    • @joshuaturner1772
      @joshuaturner1772 5 лет назад

      @@dciimho2798 right, make sense, I think it may be good practice to just change them both. Especially sense it's not a huge fix. Also on the port side, it doesn't have the power steering pump and wheel. So that part at least handle both engines.

    • @92813justin

      This is essentially a water pump. This pump is not pumping coolant from a radiator like a car does. Instead, it is pumping fresh water from the lake.

      I also believe that newer boats have a radiator/heat exchanger with coolant/antifreeze in them and then the boat sucks up water from the lake that cools this heat exchanger.

Between the brass plate and the impeller side is sealed only by the O'ring. He put a paper gasket between the brass plate and impeller/O'ring? The kit comes with roughly 5 gaskets for different applications but the sole gasket used is the second one shown in the video.
