My address is Ocean Isle but I live west of the intercoastal waterway. They can refurbish that stretch of beach every year but it is an inlet to the intercostal waterway and will always erode during tropical storms or hurricanes. Sunset Beach is 5 miles south. They do not allow building directly on the beach.

The submerged lots still have owners. I did some digging, and the daughters of the guy who founded OIB own most of the submerged lots. It costs $100 a year in taxes per underwater lot. These could definitely be flipped if sand ever started accruing on this end of the island (which would be helped by that terminal groin they want to build.)

With sea level rise , these homes with very soon be only accessible by boat and in five to ten years their homes will be in the sea lanes. The question is: when will the insurance companies cease to insure? The time is now to dismantle , either move the homes in one piece or disassemble them. The main objective would be to reduce the debris in the sea lanes.

The ocean always wins. I used to live in Westlake near Pacifica south of San Francisco. Back in the 70s a friend had the apartment on the street overlooking the ocean. Open her front room curtains the Pacific Ocean. She and neighbors had backyard about 10 feet out and then the cliff. Then came global warming. Inch by inch the cold freezing ocean gets warmer and higher. The ocean was 300 feet out from the shore. Even at high tide it just came in 50 feet. No more. Her street is gone and the next block over is the new cliff. Horrible and frightening. Man has ruined the 🌎
