Mainstream Australians support Australia Day on the 26th of January

- The Institute of Public Affairs’ Mia Schlicht explains how the silent majority is not so silent anymore! 69 per cent of Australians have declared Australia Day should be celebrated on the 26th of January.
In the recent past, every January, Australians have needed to endure the handwringing and navel-gazing of the self-appointed thought leaders and elites demanding we think of the reasons to be ashamed of Australia. No more.
It is clear that mainstream Australians have had a gutful of this attitude and being put upon by the elites. They know Australia is the greatest nation on earth, that our way of life and freedoms are the envy of the world, and that they must be cherished and celebrated.
Encouragingly, the poll showed a jump in support for Australia Day from 18-24-year-olds, up 10 per cent to 52 per cent.

I'm ready to celebrate the greatest country in the world!
We all are, why would changing the date of a (recently declared) celebration make you love the country less?
I propose a 4 day Sep/Oct holiday Australia/Republic day, Easter in second half of the year.

No matter what date it gets changed to it still will probably be not good enough for the indigenous community!! Sick of this rubbish!!

@@RaymondSewell-g6z Absolut, Australians are sick and tired of these people who just want to change everything, the sad part about it is that it's just a small handful of indigenous people who have an issue with it, most are OK with it and they're happy to move on, but you get these white Australians who think they need to go up against the majority, just to show that they're not racist. We 've got you news for those people, you're not a racist just because you want to move on and stop with the devision.
'Australia Day' exists mainly because the 'Australian Natives (white people born in Australia) Association' in the 1930s lobbied for Jan. 26 to be a 'National Day' commemorating "the founding of a new 'White' Nation in the South Pacific".
Now how does that 'grab you'?
A typical example of believing the BS the IPA feeds you. Jan 26 wasn't finally gazetted as Australia Day nationally until 1993. There's no history here. It's just the date pedo cabin boy fidler Cook claimed Oz was terra nullius, uninhabited. I am so sick and tired of these elites and these minorities who keep bringing up this rubbish every year, get it through your heads , Australians want Australia day, the message is loud and clear, so to all you anti Australians, get over it or get out.
Asking for a date to be changed so it doesn't fall on the same date as an invasion doesn't mean anti Australian. It means they are thinking of everyone. Maybe those who can't think of everyone should get out.
@jacquihunter4260 you can call it invasion or what ever makes you feel good but, the fact is that there isn't a country that wasn't discovered by explorers at some time in history and where settlers from other countries then moved to. It's not just something that happed to Australia, it's time to move on and for everyone to concentrate on all the Goodier everyone living here is enjoying thanks to the efforts of all Australians who have made the country what it is.
No other country celebrates a date a place was invaded, they celebrate independence, NZ celebrates treaty, it doesn't make me feel good that Australia does when another date could so easily be chosen & it was a different date before 1994 anyway so you don't have to be so arrogant about it.
This spoken like a true white Australian …….and you wonder where these young generation picked up this rhetoric ……. It’s all ok unless you are part of that minority …… would it hurt anyone for us to venerate being Australian on another day….. pick a day you have so many to choose from.

I think the Australians who continue to think January 26th is an appropriate date need to get educated why it isn’t.
I am a proud Australian who trace descendants back to the 1840s. I spent 50+ years celebrating Australia Day on January 26th without any insight as to what that date means to Indigenous Australians. Now I know about generational trauma, the history of Sorry Day and Day of Mourning, I can’t go back. I love Australia, but a day to celebrate what makes this country great for everyone who lives here should not be tainted by its negative impact on the original inhabitants of this land.
Celebrate Federation Day or make up a new date, just change this date. To be fair we haven’t been celebrating it long anyway.

@shibarmyburnz1978 your a sad individual aren't you?
I’m all for Australia Day - always have been. I hate any politicisation of divisive issues to serve one’s own agenda or aggrandisement.
What I find curious here is the repeated references to the opinion of younger Australians - 25-30 and 30-40 years of age brackets. This seems to be seen as positive in this context because it supports an IPA position. However, the majority of younger Australians, and younger citizens more broadly across western societies, absolutely do kit support Israel, absolutely do support creation of a Palestinian state, and absolutely want to stop the Gaza holocaust, and yet their collective opinion on that subject is ignored, denigrated, or blatantly oppressed.
Consistency and authenticity are the currency of the future, and governments and think tanks alike (incl. the IPA) need to adhere to these principles if they want to remain relevant to “the silent majority”.
Genocide is wrong; having to explain and justify why genocide is wrong and must be stopped means there are serious problems with our society.

Sometimes you need to stand up for what is right, and that may not necessarily be what the majority wants. I'm not saying anything about Australia Day, just that flawed logic. But we are dealing with the IPA here, and logic is not high on their agenda.
The 26th of January 1949 is the day Australians received their independence from British Rule. Share the facts.
Don't know about that but I do know January 26 was the date Arthur Phillip first put the brittish flag in the sand symbolism of taking over land

The passing of the Constitution enabled Australia’s 6 British colonies to become one nation, the Commonwealth of Australia, on 1 January 1901.
The Constitution was passed by British Parliament and signed by Queen Victoria on 9 July 1900.
The first ever Australia Day was held on 30 July 1915 as a fundraiser for World War 1.
