i still love the part where John is all "IMPORTANT URGENT STUFF GRARR GRARR" into the phone and on the other end John is all AHAHAHA
“LIVE FROM THE MOON”
Linnell: "DUDE WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY AND WHY IS HE ON THE MOON"
Flans, mad chillin': "man idgaf, dude's chillin' on the moon, badass, plus it's not my problem."
Reminds me of my job.
I want this as a gif lol
@@literaryloser4470so many applications. It's the only GIF I'd ever send 😂
Has any band ever had as much fun making music as these two dorks? I love them.
What about Ween?
saying linnell's hair looks beautiful is like saying grass grows from the ground
it also grows from linnells head
a) I'm going to be a stupid girl and say that I love John L's hair.
b) These guys are fracking brilliant, everything they do is fantastic.
i love his hair so much
Everything in this comment is true except for u being stupid
Skateboarding astronauts.... definitely They Might Be Giants.
NvPGulstab I wanna be reincarnated as a skateboarding argonaut...
@@Ruddyrooknj You and me both. I just want to get my hands on that golden fleece.
"The truth is where the sculptor's chisel chipped away the lie." Now THAT's philosophy. Dust-wind-dude.
Mind-blowing lyrics for sure. I used to think it was "chipped away the line." But after I read this, it blew my mind. You're right. Wow. That's genius. A rock that spoke a word...
The lyrics of this song are literally perfect I am 100% serious this song is absolutely one of the most mind bending pieces of music ive ever heard and its all the juxtaposition of the instrumental to the cryptic lyrics. TMBG for life
These guys belong in the rock hall of fame
True
But that place is a joke.
@@dj-um7eldo you know what song you are listening to?
@@Lowgraphicsdeer
Yes
They're in the marble hall of fame.
I've said it once and I'll say it again: BOTH of their hairstyles ROCK in this video.
I realize that Wayne Terrell posted his comment 5 years before I read it, but the reason TMBG videos look like Pete and Pete is because Adam Bernstein was a director for both.
Cool.
John Flansburgh holding that guitar the way I hold my cat when he doesn't want his eyedrops
They continually downplay the genius of their lyrics. That's commendable. So much to love.
TMBG is magical. Because they have never specifically tried to be "cool," they've ironically ended up being way cooler than most.
'The truth is where the sculptor's chisel chipped away the lie' is, I think, my favorite line in any song.
It's a brilliant commentary on an artist's intentions for their art.
“The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, *I just have to chisel away the superfluous material* ”
― Michelangelo
@@001variation "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."

This isn't my favorite TMBG song, but it's the one that brings me more joy than any other.
Hi, I know it’s been two years, but what is your favorite TMBG song? Also, I hope you’re well.
@@mysteriousnonamegirl7685 Unpronouncable.
@@JohnBrown-pq9tj oh nice!! Thanks for getting back to me :))
I recently tried to send a list of my favourite TMBG songs to a friend to check out and it ended up like 30 songs long and I was sure I forgot some very important songs on there.
It's so hard to pinpoint a favourite because a lot of the songs are so different and it depends what mood you're in. I love things like this and you're on fire when they need a good beat and you're in a bit of a crazy head banging mood, then other times some lucky ball and chain or lie still, little bottle just hits the spot for a jazzy or country change then there's like unpronounceable or rhythm section want ad. Lots off nanobots or flood are good to listen to if you want to hear something and go "dafuq does that mean?" I honestly can't pick a favourite but maybe canajoharie? Oh or ecnalubma! I lose my shit when that comes on 😂.
Edit: answer and she's an angel are also amazing. For a softer sentimental vibe.
And I love "am I awake?" Because it's just sortof depressing and sad and I love the video clip with like the news anchor and that in it.
@@noth9617 Am I Awake is top 5, if not top 3.
These guys wrote the plot of dead space before it was even a concept. Legends.
Easily the best early TMBG music video.
LOL That's not saying much. Also, wow, this is the oldest comment I've ever seen.
@@augustgreig9420 I wrote this before I started college and now I've been at the same job for 6 years!
@@quartzy4914 Good going! Wish ya the best
Happy 30 years to this masterpiece of an album!
all the comments on tmbg's old videos should be archived forever tbh
real
this is a meme between my friend group. Thank you TMBG
IM SEEING THEM IN OCTOBER IM SO DAMN EXITED YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
AfromanJon It's the much-coveted Mojo Chessmaster. Flansburgh designed it himself and it was built by Chris Cush of Mojo Guitar Shop (which has since closed).
i love it
men in space suits play the tenor and bari sax
it is so awesome
plus this song is one of my all time favorites
3 dislikes can't see the things the stone shows.
I would give anything to sit in a meeting where they came up with ideas for this.
"Well for "the statue got me high" it seems obvious we go for a tea cup and perhaps lots of references to the solar system and astronoughts"
Well, it was the space album.
These lyrics should go straight into the anthology of American literature. Lorenzo da Ponte would surely be proud of these guys who wrote such a masterpiece.
I especially love the lyric "the truth is where the sculptures chisel chips away the lies."
@@R.Merkhet Agree with you mate, that's one the best SCULPTED line ever, to follow along the same metaphor.
Cool pun
I feel like any TMBG song that includes bari sax is a winner!
Why can't this be on eternal repeat...
I'm not sure it was just the statue that got him high, but I guess given the astronauts playing musical instruments I'll take his word for it.
Jazz-tronauts!
This song has grown on me. Now I love it.
Still high to this day.
Been learning the accordion part on harmonica for giggles. Dang, what a jam.
TMBG Got Me High.
God, these dudes really know how to itch the tism brain
ADHD = Ahey Dight He Diants
Them and Weird Al spoke to my quirky self more than anything else ever will
TMBG is the greatest group ever. It's that simple.
One of my favorite TMBG songs
Forgot how soothing TMBG is when you smoked way too much.
they really made Flansburgh not look like himself
Looks like Doc Ock lol
Linnell's never gonna give you up.
he better not let me down either
It's been twelve years since I posted this, and I can't for the life of me figure out where I made the connection between John Linnell and Rick Astley. If anybody has any ideas, let me know.
That is the best guitar I've ever seen. I want to know where they find their instruments the mutes on the trumpets in "Birdhouse in Your Soul" (that might not be the right title) are awesome too.
my dad and I used to do the same
RIP, strangers dad
omg! this is one of my favorite songs, yet i had never seen the video... never knew it existed...
Tmbg and weird al the only musicians to put a nash metropolitan in their videos
Think the other car is a Cadillac? Because that would be a hilarious callback to Beep Beep by the Playmates - although the Nash was a Rambler in that one. ruclips.net/video/ayTJtVzHOLs/видео.html
@@mikes6707 That's a first gen Chevy corvair 1960-64
One of the songs where they both perform vocals which is a huge plus, as well as the big band / ska sounds add an even cooler element than normal.
I also love the skateboarding Astronaut, just gonna say it.
I totally want the guitar that Linnell used for this video.
Looks like you switched up the names there, Jimbo
Definitely one of the best videos of theirs
its an awesome song too
I got high with a statue once. ONCE!
This excuse never worked in high school.

FREAKIN DORKS (god I love you both Johns - only band where like 98% of all songs are great)
A llot of their early videos were directed by Adam Bernstein, who did a LOT of work on Pete & Pete. This video has shots that look straigh out of that show.
❤️❤️❤️
Space Odyssey at 3am:
One of my favorite music videos :D
John Linnell is the ONLY person who can rock out on the accordian
This guy: *forgets the existence of Weird Al Yankovic*
Wow. This band really isn't bad at all. I like this song!
The statue got me high
The statue got me high
The monument of granite sent a beam into my eye
The statue made me die
The statue made me die
It took my hand it killed me and it turned me to the sky
The stone it called to me
(And now I see the things the stone has shown to me)
A rock that spoke a word
(An animated mineral it can be heard)
And though I once preferred a human being's company
They pale before the monolith that towers over me
The statue got me high
The statue got me high
The truth is where the sculptor's chisel chipped away the lie
The statue made me fry
The statue made me fry
My coat contained a furnace where there used to be a guy
The stone it called to me
(And now I see the things the stone has shown to me)
A rock that spoke a word
(An animated mineral it can be heard)
And as the screaming fire engine siren filled the air
The evidence had vanished from my charred and smoking chair
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And now it is your turn
(Your turn to hear the stone and then your turn to burn)
The stone it calls to you
(You can't refuse to do the things it tells you to)
And as the screaming fire engine siren fills the air
The evidence will vanish from your charred and smoking chair
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And what they'll find is just a statue
Standing where the statue got you high
Does anyone know what the fuck this song is about?
@@augustgreig9420 it's about a statue that gets you high
@@mycroftlagrone duh
@@augustgreig9420 well what did you expect
The song might not mean anything or it could have some nuanced meaning to it, and that's the beauty of TMBG
At the moment it has two meanings to me... One is quite literally a possibly exaggerated story about a certain "statue". The other is basically about knowing someone is going to experience your bizarre emotions concerning certain events, people, things, situations etc... The same way you did
I love the skater-nauts! Did anyone else think of Greased Lightning when the two 50's cars took off down the flood channel at 1:48? Was this filmed in the LA river? looks like it...
This just encapsulates gen X. And I love it.
Linell actually didn't know that when he was writing it. He just thought it was about a guy's head blowing up. I guess it was a subconscious thing.
I LOVE this song...TMBG rules!
I bet you and I are the only ones who get it. Feels good, huh? "The Stone Has Shown To Me" - so obvious!! you are elite for getting that!! haw
Wow I really missed this music. Loved these guys
Who else would but TMBG have a cup of coffee orbit the earth!
Seen them 8x live by 2001
not enough people know about this gem
good question
I got tapped on the shoulder for dancing too erratically to this song at Einstein's
I love this song!!
Never trust a statue. Poor John fell in love with one and got burned.
god this is so fucking cool
great song.
i like the flying empire state building(i think thats what that is)at 0:52
2021 and I just found out this video existed.
Wow, in retrospect this is an a e s t h e t i c ass video
I'd chip in $10 if everyone did to get this video remastered :)
? Maybe...they're sort of singing a song about 2001: A Space Odyssey
I knew I wasn't the only one who thought that
I feel like I had a fever dream like this once
They might be the best representation of humans.
This had got to be about the last act of Do Giovanni.
this is a very music video
The great Brian Baz got me here
TMBG..still a damn cool band... simple stuff, sure, but lots of these songs are WAY better than most of the music today
💛
Same here. My cousin showed me their Tiny Toon videois...I didn;t get into the craze much later though. The same cousin gave my sister A User's Guide to TMBG, which she hated, and I swiped. Molto bene.
Furnace party y'all, do attend.
Which is not to say that Flans' hair is bad or anything. Also, I do believe it's spelled 'Linnell'.
Apollo 18 and Lincoln were peak TMBG.
I want his hair so bad. ;-;
A huge thanks to Trent Troop for introducing me to this song!
theoriginal72: nope. that was "polaris", although i wouldn't be surprised if one of their songs appeared in the series as background music. what i really meant, though, was that the videos LOOK like the show looked. nothing to do with the music.
There may be folks of low intellect that are fans of TMBG, but I've never met any.
they might be giants had a different but shared experience with the characters of In the Tall Grass
This song makes me think of a story I was required to read in 6th grade about spontaneous combustion. ............................................good song regardless tho!! 😤👍
The statue made me die
It took my hand it killed me wahaha
This song definitely inspired Lemon Demon
yeah tmbg is one of neil's biggest inspirations
i just want to know where the cars used in this video are.
Was some of this filmed where the ending credits of Buckaroo Banzai were filmed?
Yes. Sepulveda Dam
I’m not gay, but if I was, I would think Linnel would be why
