You are amazing. 💜 Knitting and crochet has helped improve my mental health immensely. I am going to share this video with my viewers. People need to see and hear this. It hit me hard when you said that with mental illness, it feels like "your life isn't really your own and you struggle everyday to be a version of normal". 🧶And yes, being able to choose your outfit from your knits, really does bring a sense of fullfillment. Btw, you look lovely in your light blue today.💙 Outside of crocheting and knitting, fishing, gardening, and riding my ATV has benefited me. Fishing and gardening helps me to practice patience. And ATV riding gets me out of the house and into the forest or on a mountain.

I've been taking meds for depression and anxiety for over 10 years now. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year. People who've known me for a long time said "well duh!" and I was thinking "wait, you all knew and didn't tell me!?" Therapist doesn't want me taking ADHD meds though because I've found ways to cope over the decades that work really well for me, including having over 10 WIPs at a time, one of which is always on my lap while working.
My family didn't believe in mental health when I should have first been checked out in the 90s, but who did?

Thank you for sharing and being honest. I had a lot of anxiety with perimenopause that intersected with the pandemic. I became a self taught knitter by following RUclips videos. Knitting calms me and just gives a sense of accomplishment and it’s very relaxing with the rhythm of it.

    Condolences on your losses. ♥
Thanks for sharing this incredible video - this is so informative and spot on in so many ways. I learned to knit from youtube back in 2019 and within the first hour, I knew this will stay with me for some time. I have had anxiety for many years - since childhood - and my first realization of the positive impact of knitting was during a multi-hour zoom meeting. I normally can't sit through long meetings or things I find repetitive or slow, and got out my needles to practice knitting during the meeting. With the zoom meeting on my phone and the volume on mute on my laptop, I started knitting and what a noticeable difference. This went on for hours longer and not only was I able to calm down, I was focused on could remain engaged during the meeting.
It has helped improve my patience and calmed me down during times I know I would have had difficult moments. I'm able to focus more and process thought my thoughts.
I also find it to be a great learning aid and I'm pleased when I see students knitting as it improves focus and learning. I wish many schools offered that to students.
Knitting has also reduced the size of my home... for all the space it has taken up with my yarn collection; but that's OK - I tell people I could have spent that money on alcohol or drugs.😂😂😂

Thank you for sharing! I have depression and anxiety, I started medication for depression last year and it is definitely helping. I had already been dealing with depression for at least the last 10 years without medication or really seeking help because I felt like I didn't need it/I didn't want to feel judged by my family for seeking help. But it was so hard everyday trying to deal with life stuff plus depression. I was over it and finally talking to my PCP. They do depression screenings all the time, and I would usually just lie and say everything was fine, but that day I just answered truthfully.
Knitting and crocheting help me as well. Knitting I learned last year (thanks RUclips), and I learned how to crochet in high school. Crafting is such a great outlet. I'm always advocating for my friends and family to find some type of crafty hobby, but they never listen lol. Sometimes I feel like I can't do anything, but I know I can knit some socks or crochet a blanket or stuffed animal :) . And the repetitive motions and movements are soothing. Knitting has brought a great deal of joy in my life, and has been the source of a lot of inspiration. Like looking at all the projects and different yarns sparks so much happiness. I've also found a great knitting community locally and that's been a great plus, it's just nice to have people around who are just as excited about yarn and patterns as you.

I also have Bipolar Disorder (type 1)! It's funny because, like you said, whenever I'm manic I would always want to start new hobbies and knitting is the only one of those that I've actually stuck with long term. I think it definitely helps with my anxiety. Also it's really nice to have something to concentrate on and do with your hands instead of just sitting and ruminating all the time.

This is such an inspirational vlog. I picked up knitting out of curiosity. But then I realized how it relaxed my mind. My body is so tense because I am always managing pain from lupus, Sjögren’s and peripheral neuropathy. Sometimes I am so mentally exhausted trying to take care of myself. Knitting makes me feel happy and challenged artistically. I knit something every day. It makes me feel normal. I feel so different from everyone I know. Picking up my needles just gives me peace even when what I am working on is hard and challenging. 🧶
