I bought one of the first VW MK8 Golfs When they first came out nothing but problems from day 1. Even had bits missing like fold in mirrors that were heated paid extra for winter pack no switch on steering wheel for heating. All i got was a drivers heated seat codes missing everywhere then recalls new steering wheel. It was in the garage more than on the road had it 3 years got rid of it with 2300 miles on the clock. I can't understand when people say NO idea don't want the car anymore! Because the clutch has gone ? I would be over the moon 😅 brand new clutch ! Bonus . This lady has the right attitude and realises it's a win .
Hmm, if the clutch pedal is on the deck it doesn't sound like Clutch failure itself and still sounds like there's a hydraulic problem. Either they have misdiagnosed the problem initially, not bled the clutch properly after fitting a new Master Cylinder or the Slave Cylinder has failed. I would like to think that Moores are going to fix the issue FOC as a gesture of goodwill particularly as uou are probably one of their best customers. It seems also that they have let you down on more than one occasion recently and that may start to have a knock on effect with your business and reputation. Maybe the time has come to find someone else to do your MOTs, servicing and prep work James.☹️🤔
Totally agree about this being a hydraulic failure, and with a lot of these modern day cars, the clutch slave cylinder is often located within the clutch bell housing, so it's a dismantle job, also usually resulting in contamination of the plates with hydraulic fluid from the leaky slave unit. This dealer sounds like an honest chap with integrity, which is quite a rare find in the times we are currently living in. Certainly not one of those dodgy 👺dealer geezers with a dorsal fin 🦈 on his back! 😁 .
Wish we had some dealers like yourself up here in Derbyshire.... Probably about 1998, I once bought a (near) 3 year old Saab 900 (unfortunately not the classic, the first of the GM ones) from a big VAG dealer. After a week, the ABS light came on - went in and mentioned it. Service Manager looked me in the eye, shrugged his shoulders and said 'not something that needs fixing. It’s not covered by the warranty anyway' Genuinely speechless, I walked. I checked the reg doc - the car had 2 weeks of manufacturer's warranty left. Straight around to the nearest Saab dealer who squeezed it in under warranty - nearly £900 worth of ABS pump (from memory). 25+ years on, and I still remember it like it was yesterday......
70k and the clutch needs replacing, I would say that’s about right. My 2004 Rover 25 has just hit 70k and the clutch needs looking at. Fair play to the customer who wants to get it fixed. It’s a nice motor and now they’ll have a brand new clutch on it as well 👍🏻
Excellent service for your customer. Amazing how some other people think that they can get a brand new car for second hand prices. Keep on buggering on James !
My lad bought a 68 plate astra 2 years ago , within a month he had similar clutch problems, dealer ( big car supermarket) replaced master cylinder. Within a week same problem again. Dealer replaced master cylinder again. Week later same problem . This time they replaced slave cylinder. Problem solved. The steering wheel on the kia /Hyundai i would replace. Had exactly the same on a picanto so replaced it with one from a breakers. Looked a lot better

We had something similar on our Suzuki Swift Sport, lovely car, had it delivered and 3 days later we lose all brakes as a caliper had seized and a line had failed. Drive it the 1 mile back to Suzuki as I’d just dropped off my 2013 Suzuki Swift Sport (we have 2, a 2010 and 2013), called the dealership that supplied us the 2010 Swift Sport explaining the brakes had failed catastrophically 3 days after receiving the car “oh I’m ever so sorry that has happened, be better not at Suzuki but you’re probably not willing to drive it any further. Get Suzuki to diagnose the issue and I’ll get those brakes done”. Meanwhile I’m talking to my other half about the clutch, struck a deal with the supplying dealer, they did the brakes, we did the clutch and we’re very happy with the car.
My son had Perodua Myvvi. He scrapped after 7 years and 39000 trouble free miles at a total cost of £624 including purchase, 4 tyres, and 4 DIY services. He will never have such a cheap car again.
5am love your videos James ,I take my hat off to you ,I prefer running older cars and replacing usual consumables cambelts etc, recently I sold a 30 year old car and the last 2 mots in my possession had no advisories, somoene asked has it got full service history and I was asking far less money than on e bay for it,I mean dohh the very fact the car has survived in one piece with last 2 clean mots .
You don’t start a car in gear then put it in neutral to try to select first gear! Start in third gear and just drive off. If you need to stop knock into neutral again and turn off and restart in third. Easy, and you can easily get where you are going in one gear with a bit of thought.
A word of advise from someone who worked at a hyundai main dealer, they are crap. They are a car that if it gets you there it may not get you back. There is a reason why Honda and Toyota cars are worth more and stay with there owners.
Great video James. You are 💯 right on the Hyundai not being your fault. The fault lies with the disgraceful amount of clutch issues on kias and hyundais. This is on petrol and diesel models. It's simply amazing that regardless of engine or year, they still have this issue, probably on all models since 2008. Furthermore, their 1.7 crdi are a ticking time bomb and their post 2018 1.6 crdis are plagued with dpf, injector and other issues. Hyundais have earned an ill deserved reputation as a quality car.
I watch your channel regularly. Makes me wonder whether yoiu have sold any car that has not broken down in a month.maybe you should rethink about moors garage and maybe get some decent cars
James, just got off the phone to the BBC spoke at length to Matt Allbrright (He of Rouge Traders) reckons you sound like a classic for him to investigate .Mentioned the loan cars, gifts and snacks, always willing to help and going above and beyond warranty issues. He reckons you sound like a real dodgy dealer and believes he could make a whole series just on you alone-He has promised me a drink when the series airs-Just thought you would appreciate a little humour in what appears to be a very tedious life?????? James please keep the content rolling looking forward to seeing the new grey chippings in the car park! Maybe you could add to the ads "Car has been chipped?" Alan B
I've had a few cars and some of them have had problems soon after buying them. The first one that springs to mind was a 15yo Mazda 3, great car, called the garage and the guy didn't mess about, he just arranged for the repairs to be done at my convenience. The second one that springs to mind, the guy argued and argued for a week before giving in and agreeing to get it sorted, but only after I told him I would contact the AA, with whom it was guaranteed to put a complaint in. I know which garage I wouldn't hesitate to go back to & would recommend and which I'd tell people to avoid. Even brand new cars, or any other goods, can go wrong but if it's dealt with correctly it doesn't need to be a problem. Always give the seller a chance to put things right and be reasonable, only take things up a notch if it's needed, and even at that point make sure it's done stage by stage instead of going from dealing directly to being completely over the top.
At least in my limited experience there are parts of a clutch and surrounding bits that can just go instantly. It's only when the plates that are worn you start getting any notice.
You say about used cars brake but back in 2010 I got a brand new Vauxhall Astra 1.4 and had 24 miles on the clock and on the way home and it broke down and 5k worth of work to be done and the dealer was a joke had the car 5months and wouldn’t give me my money back or replace it with a new one when I got the car back it had over 400miles on the clock and no petrol in it but when the car got recovered to them it had a full tank, I wish all car dealers could be half as good as you are with people
New cars are as bad...Im' glad my 23 plate Hyundai Bayon is a motability car as the issues it has developed are big....Just had to have a antennae coil done. and now it's losing coolant , but no leaks and engine is bone dry..The local main dealer are useless .It's 14 months old and done 13,000 miles .....Down to Motability to sort out but not happy at the moment and won't be having another Hyundai , currently looking at Kia Niro as replacement
Not had much luck with our 2010 i30 1.6 diesel bought 3 years ago on 60k has now had rear subframe, rear shock absorbers, rear upper link arms, rear drop links, front shock absorbers, front coil springs, front top mounts, front drop links, one ball joint, nearside cv axle, clutch, clutch damper, 4 injectors, 4 glow plugs, power cable to glow plugs, aux in port, boot release button, steering angle sensor, starter motor, plastic elbow off the back of the clutch master cylinder,a broken cam position sensor wire by the ecu all this plus usual wear and tear items. Yes it’s an old car that will need work doing but can’t say I will ever buy another Korean motor also found parts hard to obtain from motor factors and expensive fortunately I have never had to pay any labour as I’m in the trade but can’t see where they get a good reputation from 🤷♂️ Edit not a dig in any way to you James don’t think you could do a better job of prep or warranty work and would happily buy a motor off you but goes to show like you said no one has a crystal ball
Things break. It happens. It's how you respond that makes the difference. I bought a car from Cinch with an obvious turbo fault on delivery. Foolishly I let them fix it. They just argued the toss about cost with the garage that they themselves booked to diagnose it. In the end the car was off the road for a month when it could have been fixed within a couple of days.
Consentric slave popped out bud, I did exactly the same as you on a ssangyong, I had further to drive tho, managed to drive OK by double de clutching, stopping at lights and starting in first gear, once drove from Paris back home in a 2 cv doing the same, worked out ok(!)
I've got to say you can tell the difference between the materials used in a vag/german car compared to these korean vehicles. 52k and the wear on the steering wheel and gearstick is insane.
James, your the right dealer in the right location, with the right people (most of the time) There are no dealers in the South East that come anywhere near your level of commitment.
i had the exact car, worst i20 I'v driven, had the 2 older shapes and adored them, always had them as a second car with me and the partner and a passat estate as a main family car, I dunno what's changed but my clutch on mine went at 27k and the car was driven so chill, but the clutch would potentially overheat and struggle while in stop start traffic, the previous model I did over 140k in it with the original gearbox and clutch, the interior in the newer models was lower quality than the previous one to which I hated, all cheap and hard plastics, looks the part mind, and yeah every car is different and luck of the draw, my passat on 173k with all original parts which I will hold onto aslong as I can, and 100% agree good customer and judge the dealer by what happens. fair play chops!
Never needed a clutch in over 30 years of driving a car. I am nearly 60 now so born at a time when it was normal to put in neutral at traffic lights. Those days are long gone.
I had customer driving instructor, he used Mini Metros in their day. Would buy new every 150, 000 miles. I asked how many clutches did you get through, he said non. All lasted 3-4 years and 150k miles.
Wear and tear item . Decent understanding buyer with grey matter between the ears . Buyer is now goona have peace of mind brand new clutch. I checked Wifeys little Noddy Car 'matiz' for her few days ago as she said clutch peddle was biting high, i put it into high gear at Low soeed , like 4th gear at 30mph and floored the accelerator, it picked up soeed , no excessive revs without power..all good
Better the clutch right now than after the warranty comes to an end for the customer .Maybe time to get one of those coffee pod tassimo machines in for in case a customer wants a drink while waiting Oh and that steering wheel try and source a decent one from a breakers would be the best plan of action
I've seldom had breakdowns in my cars, (none since the 90's) so I could say I never had repair bills. But since the mid 90's they all had regular maintenance and preventative replacements done on all of them, which probably cost me more by replacing worn but not yet broken parts. Own a car... know it will wear out.
*My Son thought an MOT was a Service and consequently neglected an oil and Filter change and guess what Engine Scrap and more to replace than the car worth !*
Problem with 69k miles cars mate, most things are going for the first time, tbh your maybe better at 100k with plenty of new parts on, unfortunately people don't understand that and think 50,60k cars are mint, clutch going is right on the money at that miles.
You can't tell the clutch is about to give up the ghost not your fault it's a machine at the end of the day the thing is you go above and beyond when things do go wrong
Unless it to old for emissions but not 40 years old and except. Or high emissions and taxed on the high emissions. Unless its over 40 years or below 1500cc it's screwed really.
I always think its funny how bad luck in this job , often seems to come in Three's .. Same pattern , not a complaint for Months and then bang , 3 come out of nowhere !!
I test drove a kia rio 1.4 with 100k and clutch was heavy i knew straight away the clutch is on it last legs or master cylinder was failing which are well known so walked away
Tbh at that miles it's probably original clutch, I've not had a master cylinder go for years it's nearly always the consentric slave, on one the other week dual mass was worn and piston went too far and popped out, instant no clutch.
Clutches tend to work fine until they don't, without warning!. I wonder if it's the replacement master cylinder which has given up? Do let us know what it was.
It probably was the master cylinder in the first instance. That could've been a problem for a while that put too much stress on the clutch! At least your customer was being realistic!
James a friend of mine 10 years ago picked up a Brand New C3 and it broke down 30 miles later. I can’t remember what the fault was now but even new cars can have issues. So you couldnt predict this was going to happen so ignore the trolls.
I had a Volvo 740 that cost me almost nothing in the 10 years I had it, and a ford focus that i spent a fortune every few months for 8 years. I had to give up on at point never made 10 years with me., both owned from new.
My father had a volvo 740 estate on a F plate and racked up 200k miles, no major mecanials other than wear parts eg brakes a few suspension bits and two clutches. Engine was still running well when he sold it.
Your customer service is amazing mate if only all car dealers were like you

My son had Perodua Myvvi. He scrapped after 7 years and 39000 trouble free miles at a total cost of £624 including purchase, 4 tyres, and 4 DIY services. He will never have such a cheap car again.

‘some helmets’ - love it ! AJ
When you said about someone having a car and only changing the light bulb it reminded me of only fool & horses with trigger and his broom haha
You got it
You can refinish the steering wheel with aerosol SEM sure coat it’s sooo easy and the transformation is amazing
Oh I'll check that out
Wish you were closer James I’d buy from you in a heartbeat 👍great service
If you match your revs you can change down as well, if you go slow you can change up as, if it's a good battery and starter you can drive miles (!)
Exemplary use of the word "helmets" there 😂

A word of advise from someone who worked at a hyundai main dealer, they are crap. They are a car that if it gets you there it may not get you back. There is a reason why Honda and Toyota cars are worth more and stay with there owners.
Hi James it happens to new car too. l bought a 24 reg £29.000 broke down two days later. And was in dealers garage 10 days. It just life
Great video James.
I've heard bad things about their 1.6 petrol
I don't doubt
James, I bought my chariot from Boudicca and only had to change the leather reins !! Sort it out mate !
😂😂 8
I watch your channel regularly.
Makes me wonder whether yoiu have sold any car that has not broken down in a month.maybe you should rethink about moors garage and maybe get some decent cars
I bought a brand new Toyota Corolla in 1987, the master cylinder failed within 2000 miles, it's just that some parts fail.
I had clutch hydraulics fail on a brand new audi with 600 miles on the clock, components fail, let alone at 80k miles, it happens!
Its ROGUE...rouge is what you put on your face
Rouge Traders - bet you’re tickled pink by that offer Chops
Did mention before, clutches and slave cylinder and damper issue with these Hyundai,s we recover quite a few on the roadside with these faults.
You say about used cars brake but back in 2010 I got a brand new Vauxhall Astra 1.4 and had 24 miles on the clock and on the way home and it broke down and 5k worth of work to be done and the dealer was a joke had the car 5months and wouldn’t give me my money back or replace it with a new one when I got the car back it had over 400miles on the clock and no petrol in it but when the car got recovered to them it had a full tank, I wish all car dealers could be half as good as you are with people
S*** happens chops it is what it is I would rather buy from you than some tool who doesn’t give a toss once the deal is done
I think they are not what they used to be
Kia and Hyundai are the same company!
Kia and Hyundai are like VW and Skoda - same mechanicals but dressed in different outfits.
Yes it’s an old car that will need work doing but can’t say I will ever buy another Korean motor also found parts hard to obtain from motor factors and expensive fortunately I have never had to pay any labour as I’m in the trade but can’t see where they get a good reputation from 🤷♂️
Edit not a dig in any way to you James don’t think you could do a better job of prep or warranty work and would happily buy a motor off you but goes to show like you said no one has a crystal ball
Yes heard this few times
Consentric slave popped out bud, I did exactly the same as you on a ssangyong, I had further to drive tho, managed to drive OK by double de clutching, stopping at lights and starting in first gear, once drove from Paris back home in a 2 cv doing the same, worked out ok(!)
So to save a cup the quid you've probably damaged her starter motor
I've got to say you can tell the difference between the materials used in a vag/german car compared to these korean vehicles. 52k and the wear on the steering wheel and gearstick is insane.
James, your the right dealer in the right location, with the right people (most of the time)
There are no dealers in the South East that come anywhere near your level of commitment.
Appreciate this
i had the exact car, worst i20 I'v driven, had the 2 older shapes and adored them, always had them as a second car with me and the partner and a passat estate as a main family car, I dunno what's changed but my clutch on mine went at 27k and the car was driven so chill, but the clutch would potentially overheat and struggle while in stop start traffic, the previous model I did over 140k in it with the original gearbox and clutch, the interior in the newer models was lower quality than the previous one to which I hated, all cheap and hard plastics, looks the part mind, and yeah every car is different and luck of the draw, my passat on 173k with all original parts which I will hold onto aslong as I can, and 100% agree good customer and judge the dealer by what happens. fair play chops!
Agree the earlier the better
Never needed a clutch in over 30 years of driving a car. I am nearly 60 now so born at a time when it was normal to put in neutral at traffic lights. Those days are long gone.
I had customer driving instructor, he used Mini Metros in their day. Would buy new every 150, 000 miles. I asked how many clutches did you get through, he said non. All lasted 3-4 years and 150k miles.
Never taught my Mrs then! 😏😒
Least you had a warranty good for you.. in sorting out just life.. cars go wrong i have spent an extra £1000 on my fiat but runs lovely now..
Wear and tear item .
Decent understanding buyer with grey matter between the ears .
Buyer is now goona have peace of mind brand new clutch.
I checked Wifeys little Noddy Car 'matiz' for her few days ago as she said clutch peddle was biting high, i put it into high gear at Low soeed , like 4th gear at 30mph and floored the accelerator, it picked up soeed , no excessive revs without power..all good
Your not on your own James, Arthur Daley had to put up with these issues day after day fella! 🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣
Not first time I've seen this
Problem with 69k miles cars mate, most things are going for the first time, tbh your maybe better at 100k with plenty of new parts on, unfortunately people don't understand that and think 50,60k cars are mint, clutch going is right on the money at that miles.
What a smart looking little car. AJ
Last car i owned i did 156k on the original clutch still working when i scrapped it!
Had an ix35 from new, 2 years old same thing with cylinder, common fault.
You can't tell the clutch is about to give up the ghost not your fault it's a machine at the end of the day the thing is you go above and beyond when things do go wrong
True
The joys of owning a business. Blinkin' nightmare sometimes.
you should do hill starts on a 30% hill to check every clutch ! hee hee
Isn't it the master cylinder or linkage to the clutch that is defective rather than the clutch itself as you drove it back to the garage in 1st gear.
It's the clutch cable 😂😂😂 Those were the days
I had the same problem with Vauxhall Vectra new master cylinder, next day same problem turned out to be Slave cylinder
Best video ever. Walking 🚶🏻♀️
With the cost of road tax a older car makes more sense than ever
Unless it to old for emissions but not 40 years old and except. Or high emissions and taxed on the high emissions. Unless its over 40 years or below 1500cc it's screwed really.
I always think its funny how bad luck in this job , often seems to come in Three's .. Same pattern , not a complaint for Months and then bang , 3 come out of nowhere !!
You cannot be any fairer with your customers than you are - nice that the i20 customer recognises that!
Cheers
I test drove a kia rio 1.4 with 100k and clutch was heavy i knew straight away the clutch is on it last legs or master cylinder was failing which are well known so walked away
Yes if they display like that is easy spot
When ever my wife see,s a nutter she say,s to me I bet you know them. I nearly alway,s tell her it's one of my old customers. 😂
I had a 107 clutch went every 30k or just under although you could still limp it about just enough to get home or to the garage
It probably was the master cylinder in the first instance. That could've been a problem for a while that put too much stress on the clutch! At least your customer was being realistic!
Exactly
James a friend of mine 10 years ago picked up a Brand New C3 and it broke down 30 miles later. I can’t remember what the fault was now but even new cars can have issues. So you couldnt predict this was going to happen so ignore the trolls.
“Couldn’t predict “ 👍
Cheers mate

@@ChopsGarage glad you knew I meant couldn’t predict stupid auto correct.
The hyundai is a good looking car...for anyone ,, dealer or not ...its well worth a clutch , all day long
I had a Volvo 740 that cost me almost nothing in the 10 years I had it, and a ford focus that i spent a fortune every few months for 8 years. I had to give up on at point never made 10 years with me., both owned from new.
My father had a volvo 740 estate on a F plate and racked up 200k miles, no major mecanials other than wear parts eg brakes a few suspension bits and two clutches. Engine was still running well when he sold it.
Leave them say what they want, the lady had even test driven it and was happy to purchase.
True with her mechanic son too
Come on, James you should know by now. You have to put new brakes new diss and a new clutch in a car for somebody to have it these days.😂😂😂😂😂
