One of my buddies is a guard, that's his job after an entire career in the army with multiple overseas tours. I asked him what it's like dealing with some of the gangs etc, and he told me he has no problems in his unit, that you treat inmates with respect and you get respect back. Basic human decency.

My grandpa was a prison guard when he was in his 20’s and one day a prison riot went off and prisoners were attacking guards and everyone, but my granpa would treat the prisoners with respect and a big prisoner picked my grandpa up and put him a corner and told him if he stays in the corner he would be safe.

i was a CO for 4 years, had almost zero problems with inmates. it was a mutual understanding, if you didn't bother me, i didn't bother you. most guys are just trying to do their time. there was a very small percent of guys who were determined to cause problems, but the other dudes in the tanks would usually fix that well before a CO would need to be involved.

This is what these clowns don't understand. Your own will check you before anyone else. Yiu dont draw the c.o.'s attention NEVER ! Because they will fuck up your and everyone else's program. They will search and blame it on your loudmouth. And when they find another race with a tattoo gun or drugs and a cell phone or money. Who do you think is gonna get the heat ? Your loud mouth. You can get killed and stabbed over shit like that. They will shut off the power and a.c. when it's 110 believe me there are alot of prisons in central California that get that hot.So run your mouth. And see how your own people deal with you.

I like the man, what you see is what you get with him, there's no bull shit in him and i fucking respect that..
Takes a big man to give up that life and not only deal with it but learn to adjust to the new life and succeed.
It's not easy being able for a man who's lived that life to communicate with every day working man as you find you don't have much in common with and that's why so many go back because they just don't what to do.
I want Big Herc to fuck the system and be more successful and prove to all the haters out there including the mother fucking police that a man with gangster spirit can not only survive but adabt to any fucking environment..

Im a guard, had a laugh over the hill billy thing cuz its true. Ive seen them hire guys who literally couldnt even read. I served two combat tours with the Marines and had a pretty good understanding of respect when I came in. Some of my coworkers not so much. They really will hire some of the dumbest and weakest in either charecter or body (or both) ive ever seen just to put warm bodies in uniforms. Respect from inmates is actually pretty easy. You treat everybody equally and fairly, you dont mess with somebody who hasnt done anything wrong, talking to inmates like theyre actually people goes a long ways too (gee, who woulda thought just not talking to them like theyre trash might make them feel better about you?)
But, the most important is consistency. If you say you will do something you do it, if you cant or dont want to do something you say no. NEVER lie to an inmate to avoid saying no or doing your job. Not only will they ALWAYS find out, but it shows weakness and lack of authority. If you are weak you arent getting respect, and without respect you have no authority. You can be the perfect guard whose inmates respect them and have a pod with zero problems, get caught lying once and you aint shit anymore. For example, if you tell a guy he can get a phonecall he gets a phonecall, if you cant do it you dont lie and say some stupid weak bullshit like "oh, uhh.... its down for maintenance." you just say no and tell them to ask again later. No is better than lying to avoid having to say no. Better yet, take the 30 seconds to explain truthfully why you said no.
You get some guards that I like to call cage-kickers. Theyre guards who talk a lot of shit when theres a locked door between them and the inmates, but that door has to open sometime and when it does if you can't handle whatever is on the other side youre gonna get yer ass beat.
Frankly, Ive met guards who are just plain dumb lazy assholes who do fantastically stupid shit that puts them, thier fellow guards, and the inmates in danger and generally make life miserable for everyone around them.

To show how far respect can get you... a riot broke out on the yard. Three officers were inside the fence. Two officers got a beat down and the third walked across the yard to the gate and stood there until the other guards suited up in riot gear and threw gas in there and took control of the situation. The third guard was never touched because he gave respect, he was showed respect.

My Mom was a deputy at a county jail. She never had any problems except for this one time where a dude just started slicing her up for no reason. She had never met him. Other than that she would get inmates cards for their families and make sure they were able to call out on the phone and shit like that. One time she came home with some sick ass braids that an inmate did! Lol.She said it was the easiest job in the world because you just had to treat people with respect and understand that they could be going through some real shit. One time some ladies in jail for prostitution even had her back against some renegade inmate.

I'm a first year CO. I get along with the majority of inmates. I talk loud and tough when I need to but I refrain from talking shit because it's not good. Sometimes I will yell it an inmate to intervene in a situation instead of going Hands-On because going Hands-On it's the last thing I want to do. Once I do that and the situation is over I won't continue to yell or communicate in any way I will just finish my round and leave out of the unit because what started as an intervention to prevent a bad situation can easily and almost every time will become a shit talking match if you the CO keeps on talking. I talk when I need to talk I don't talk shit and I keep it moving. Stop to chat from time to time answer questions resolve problems maintain the security of the facility make sure everyone still alive and that's it. I try to have empathy for the inmates and I treat them as I would want to be treated to the best of my ability and then at a certain point I will start to treat an inmate the way he treats me. So example everytime I come up in a tank dude gives me shit for yelling shower before I look in the community shower to check to make sure everything cool. If I get a response that somebody's in the shower I don't look in but if there's no response I look in to make sure there ain't nobody lying up in their dead as fuck or having a heart attack or whatever. But dude gives me shit for it every time so I turn around after many many times and I say why you always watching me as I check on the shower dude. And he goes I don't give a fuck about you check in the shower dude blah blah blah a little bit of shit talk and that was the end of it. Thank God that worked. What the point is that shit talking never helps. It compromises the Safety and Security of everybody. Just be professional do what the fuck you're there to do. And go home at the end of your shift.

I wasn't a guard but I worked with a bunch of county Sheriffs and State correctional facilities. One of the things we did was have to work on telecom systems, including the phones for the inmates. One of the inmates had busted up the phone in the old Richland (Columbia, SC) Jail so I had to go in and fix it. The phones are on the opposite side of the wall from the doors, so I had to cross this pod that was like 30 x 40. It was horrendously overcrowded because the newer facility was still being built. Some inmate was giving me shit the entire time, trailing me about 3 feet behind me and talking low enough that the guards at the door couldn't hear - "I'm gonna fuck you", "suck my cock", "you're my bitch", etc. All that kind of shit.
I knew that if I decked him - and I could - the other inmates (about 50) would tear me apart before the guards could rescue me. I'm a minority but I wasn't the right kind of minority for that particular cell. So I didn't say a damn thing, fixed the phone and walked out but I was steaming mad. The Joker kept it all the way up to the door and then started laughing about it with his buddies as the cell door was locked. Just as the guard started to go down the hall, I turned around. The cell was the old style with bars instead of glass. Through the bars, I said in a loud enough voice that everyone in the cell could hear but the guards down the hall couldn't - "You want to know the difference between you and me? I can go home now. Enjoy your right hand, bitch.".
Just about every face in the pod turned to him because he had just been shown up. He lost all cred and he knew it. So of course he rushed the bars and started screaming about how he was going to fuck me up. THAT the guards heard, came back down the hall, rushed in and shall we say subdued the inmate before hauling him off to solidary. I waved at him as they literally dragged him down the hallway.
Short story - don't EVER talk shit. Not as a guard, not as an inmate. You're just asking to lose face.

When I was a Deputy, I am ex military as well. I treated everyone with respect and got respect. I did my job, search, seizures and so on and popped paperwork when it needed to be. I was respected and protected because I was firm fair and consistent. I have been attacked by new kids coming in and I, I handled business. The inmates knew I could protect myself. After the fight and the inmate did his time in J-Pod (disciplinary) he would get checked when he arrived in another unit. I did not ask these inmates to do this. They did it themselves because they respected me, because I treated them with respect but I did my job. I did not let things slide for anyone, all were treated the same. I have had inmates save my life when I started to pass out and my head fell toward the shower lip. That could have broken my neck or cracked my skull, but they caught me and called for help.
Inmates are still human beings and just because they did some bad shit doesn’t mean that they have no good inside them. Treat them fairly, firmly and consistent on all races and you are good. Mostly. Because there is always someone who would just rather pop a cap in you, not because of you personally, but because of what you represent.

There has to be a respect for humanity, especially in a prison. The inmates are often times the most vulnerable, poorest people. Most are just trying to pay their debt to society, although there are bad eggs.
The Stanford prison experiment shows just how much power can go to someone's head.

    Very rarely did that happen.
The few times it did, the guys would laugh at the dude that tried.

spanishh2001 Yeah but it's not about that its about respect. None of those officers want to get beat up . They know if they treat people unfairly what can happen to them can be bad too. Mainly officers are just there to do their job, but the ones that feel like gods. End up getting shit thrown at their face, spit on, and beat down. Most likely quitting.

AS A FORMER FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL EMPLOYEE I HAVE SEEN IT ALL. FIRST OF ALL BIG HERC, NO GUARDS IN PRISON, CO’S. I SURVIVED 21 YEARS BY ONE SIMPLE RULE. TREAT INMATES WITH RESPECT. ALMOST ALL THE INMATES WILL THEN RESPECT YOU. I HAVE SEEN MANY FORMER INMATES ON THE STREET AND WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CORDIAL WITH EACH OTHER. SOME I CONSIDER FRIENDS AND THESE GUYS ARE VERY POWERFUL MEN. HERC ALSO GOT THE HILLBILLY PART RIGHT. WORKED WITH MANY OF THESE CLOWNS. THEY DON’T FARE WELL. ALSO, I GREW UP AMONGST GANGSTERS, KNEW
MANY WHO WERE LOCKED UP IN MY PLACE. AGAIN, RESPECT GOES BOTH WAYS. SIMPLE, BUT, EASY WAY TO SURVIVE IN PRISON. GREAT JOB BIG HERC!💪🏿👍💪🏿🇺🇸

I’m a correctional officer and I’m gonna tell you right now if you listen to this con your gonna find yourself in a whole world of shit. As a CO it’s our job to toss cells, to tell inmates what to do, to maintain order and discipline in the prison. We do this because the criminals that are incarcerated in institutions of reform have demonstrated a complete lack of respect and fear for the law and have been judged by a jury of their peers to be unfit to walk among normal society and make their own decisions. Therefore Wardens, Officers, and other staff have been placed in authority over these reprobates to think for them and direct their actions in a manner that will hopefully bring about a change in attitude and patterns of thought. Make no mistake that prison, contrary to anyone else’s beliefs, is OUR house. Inmates are just unruly guests that act like children and are treated in kind. Those who behave and comply withthe rules and regulations of the prison are treated and respected as adults, those that choose to misbehave will be repaid in kind with punishment and strict treatment. I’m not proposing that all Officers are perfect, indeed there are more than a few that have no business working in the corrections field. And I am in no way condoning the abuse of inmates. However, regardless of what a guard does, if as an inmate you seek to “punish” a guard or subvert that individual there will be consequences and you will not like them. I don’t care how long you have been locked up or where you have served time there is always a way for prison administration to punish you and make you rue the day you decided to overstep your bounds. The guy in this video clearly did not learn a thing from his time in prison if he is encouraging this type of behavior. And under no circumstances should you ever back a guard into a corner or try to assert your imagined “authority” because you as an inmate are not in control, don’t delude yourself for a moment with such nonsensical beliefs. Even if you manage to go as far as killing one of my brethren you will only make things worse than you could imagine and there will always be another to step in and fill the gap. The House always wins. Never forget that your own actions, regardless of the excuses and lies you tell yourself, put you where your are and you forfeited your rights the moment you chose to break the law. I know I’m going to get a lot of flak for this post, but I don’t care; I’m a Correctional Officer you can’t scare me.

As a guard we are taught to de escalate a situation. And it's all about respect. The only difference between a inmate and a guard is that we weren't caught. I get approached byinmates on the street, and they shake myhand for cooling the situation instead of getting extra time for almost calling a signal 21. In any relationship in life, respect is a key factor.

as a CO I'd like to add a few things if I may. first I show the same respect as I receive with me it's all about respect. yes there are COs that when they put on a uniform get a God complex, that's normally the new COs that are trying to make a name for themselves. there are certain things we are required to do, such as rounds and shakedowns things like that, that's just part of the job, nothing personal, UNLESS it's an inmate that stays above the radar and causes a lot of trouble for the COs then yes they get that extra attention, they get more shakedowns and get fucked with more, happy CO happy life.stay below the radar! making racist remarks like in this video calling COs hillbilly is racist and would for sure cause issues, that's very disrespectful, you wouldn't want me to call you the N word would you? I'll close by saying it's a two way street, you want respect then give respect if one or the other isn't respectful then we'll handle your business but there are certain duty and requirements we have to do like it or not, it's just part of the job. let us do our job and be gone.when you get out don't come back. I could go on but I won't but thank you for letting me post here. and keep up the good work. thanks.

I always felt I didn't fit in as well. I'm sorry you had to go through prison. If it weren't for ppl who cared when I didn't want them to there's a good chance I'd be dead od'd somewhere. Thatnks for your videos educating us about prison.

Keep reading the title as "what if a guard is taking a shit?" xD

If a guard is talking shit, ignore him, make your conversation short and polite, and mind your own business, definitely at first. He may just be like that, and will focus on the guy that reacts. Don't be his victim.
