Im his great nephew. He blows me away every time. His brother (my grandfather) Gerald is a very talented painter. Fun fact. Mike is 10 years younger than Gerald. When Gerald would leave for work as a teenager, Mike would sneak into his room to play his guitar. Little did my grandfather know that was the first steps for uncle Mike to become what he is today.
Duke was a delight at the Blues in the Gorge weekend. Yeah, he's still got the chops. He is a fun story teller, too. When he worked at the Guild factory in Rhode Island in the 1960s he would occasionally put a hand written note inside the truss rod pocket when he set up the guitars. After hearing this story, one of my friends who has a 1965 Guild D-40 that he had never adjusted the truss rod on, excitedly removed the truss rod cover to be disappointed that there was no note from Duke. Cheers!
That is super dope. I remember while attending Brown I used to go to Lupo's and watch him and ask him questions. He was so kind and I remember asking him how he ended up in R.I. and he smiled and his eyes threw shade.......lol I somehow got it and to this day adore his attention to detail. It takes a deep love of something to end up mastering it as he has.
Sweet, thank you for posting one of the good ones Club! Duke!
