The McLaren 650S was crowned performance car of the year in our awards, but what's the Spider like around the track?
The McLaren 650S recently drove away with the performance car title in our New Car Awards, but we've got our hands on the Spider version and put it through its paces to see if it can beat the Porsche 911 GT3 and become the new lap record holder. The Spider costs just shy of £200,000, with its 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 641bhp. The 650S will sprint from 0-62mph in just three seconds and will go on to reach a top speed of over 200mph.
The styling takes inspiration from the P1 hypercar, and the car has a carbon-fibre chassis and high-tech aerodynamics. Acceleration in the 650S is astonishing, the noise is reminiscent of that of the P1 and the standard ceramic brakes are really positive. The steering is full of feel and the grip is particularly impressive, meaning the 650S changes direction incredibly eagerly.
This car has race car levels of grip, acceleration and braking - made all the more impressive when you see how easy the car is to drive on the road. The McLaren 650S managed to lap the track faster than the current record holder - the Porsche 911 GT3, but don't take our word for it. Watch the video to see all the action!

This just show how absolutely incredible porsche is. No one gets as much performance per HP... the GT3 only has 475HP, and really isn't all that light compared to previous GT3's (dem heavy dual clutches, rearwheel steering, etc)
And this is coming from a HUGE mclaren fan, 650S is my "attainable" dream car
It has170 more hospower than the GT3, and only 0.2 second faster, I'd call it a "loser"
I'd call any car that is faster than a track oriented car a winner. And in this case, the 650S is a Spider which is heavier as well.

Mark Antar Yes, GT3 is track oriented, so is the Mclaren, they are using F1 tech everywhere possible in their cars; as for the weight, I am pretty sure 650S Spider has less weight than GT3 as it's got carbon fiber tub, and the track condition is damp for the GT3 but dry for the Mclaren. It's not a Win.
Mark Antar First of all, GT3 is less track oriented than a 650S. Why? Well, first of all, it's just a more sporty version of a sports coupe which is the 911. 650S is designed from ground up to be a supercar. Second, 650S has more power, and uses more race oriented technology that they get from F1....its almost completely made out of carbon fiber...unlike the GT3. 911 still has all the luxury or more than the 650S has. So...the fact that the 650S is barely faster just shows how much better the 911 is as a car, because it achieves far more with far less. .
peter petrelli fastest lap is the winner. you are right though about the mclaren being lighter. also you could probably buy two porches for the price of the 650s. I think the porsche track time was done in the dry because on the video with the aston martin the time it got was 1:14:20 so i guess they re did it in the dry to get that time. I guess the 2015 gt3 rs will beat this time though. but then you could get the coupe 650s and it would probably be just as quick.
considering the mclaren rides like a rolls royce, its a win win for mclaren! and since this is a very tight track, the mclaren cannot make use of its 175 hp advantage, still faster than a track ready gt3!

I see someone shares my same thoughts. This is a handling/technical circuit not a power circuit. Take them to Spa or Silverstone and the hp/tq difference will show easily.
This 650S convertible is 100+ lbs heavier then the coupe.
***** porsche tests cars there just to test whole car not lap time. lap time mattered in case of 918 tho.
User996 which the p1 definitely thumped! And the gtr nismo which costs just 150k was only 11 sec slower and considering the 918 weighs less, has nearly 300 HP more, has way more torque, bigger, stickier tires and ceramic brakes and not to mention the 800k price difference, the 918 isn't that fast!
Pranav Mukesh yeaaah, that's the reason why 918 is fastest car officialy around the ring. and tuned nismo (not 600hp stock) is just 11 seconds slower

GT3 RS' tires are more track oriented, so is the car overall, not to mention that this 650S is the Spider, which is about 60kg heavier than the coupe. Anyway, McLaren are coming up with a track version soon.
Bart Vandenhaute Porsche have almost a decade of experience in making cars compared to no more than 4 for McLaren? 650S has a carbon chassis indeed, but everything else is made out of a plastic composite or aluminum and all that weight saving they've done doesn't count due to the car being a convertible in this test. GT3 is a great car, not denying that, but one should also give credit to McLaren for making absolutely fantastic cars, despite not having nowhere near as much experience as Porsche, Ferrari and such...
compare the gt3 rs to the mclaren 12c can am edition for a proper head to head
KidWeazel The Can-Am Edition is a track only car, so it's not road legal. ;-)

These are both great cars, and I'd be more happy to own either. Porsche 991 Turbo Cabriolet would be my choice as all rounder, super fast, comfortable tourer, top down enjoyment and less worries about leaving it a a car park somewhere compared to 650s.
gt3: best balance between what you pay and what you get. I would like to see also a lap from the 458 speciale and from the huracan!

Isn't this the same track that EVO used to test the 991 GT3 against the 12C (that also came with the ceramic brakes & Corsas)? Seems they managed a 1:02.6 in the GT3.. Even if it isn't, why are Auto Express comparing a wet lap (in the GT3) to a dry one? Regardless, find it hilarious the 650S is barely .2 seconds faster but has nearly 200bhp more and weighs less.
People need to get a hold of themselves. This is a technical track not some power circuit. Handling,braking and grip are the main factors here. There is only 1 strait for 650S to get in speed. The GT3 does have the better Dunlop Max tires. It should be equal in turns and under braking. 650S convertible weighs 100+lbs more then coupe model. .
If I'm not mistaken this is the same track Evo had 12c and GT3 were on. The track #'s don't match up for some reason.
Suggestion: at the very end of each track test show a full table of laps recorded so far.
all these latest cars are so closely matched it could only take a tiny tiny little error to make .20 seconds difference. Even the turbo s has shown to lap tracks quicker than both of these cars .

Gt3 Lap time was in the wet, so the gt3 murders the 650S With much less power and it's half the price !!!!!

GT3 did it's lap in the dry. Their filmed laps are not the laps they did for fastest laptime.

Question for Auto Express. You said that you turned off all stability control, does that not also turn off break steer that mclaren uses to increase cornering speed? If so, shouldn't lap times be faster with track settings with stability control turned on?
Guys, I love the Porsche GT3, and even more the GT3 RS, but try to imagine if the 650 S was fitted with Pirelli Trofeo R tyres. Certainly a full second faster than this record. It's not all about power, if you don't have proper racing tyres you'll never set records.
I think this says a lot about the GT3. The McLaren has 175 more horsepower and is $150,000 more! Watch out for the 991 GT2. I will never be able to afford these cars so I'm not a fan boy of either, but the GT3 seems to stand on it's own far past it's price range and specs.
What about the turbo s? Suprised how good the 650s is given it's ride and how badly the 12c was beaten by the 458,gt2 etc. Will be interesting to see what the 458 replacement laps it in.
If I'm not wrong, 650s laps Nordschleife in 7'35 and GT3 did it 7'25 and GT3 RS did it 7'20

Considering the 911 GT3 has like 150hp less, is naturally aspirated and the engine is not exactly in the right position... I expected more than a 0.2 seconds difference, and that makes the future 911 GT3 RS even more exciting.
wet vs. dry cost way more than 0.2s... GT3 obviously is the winner.

So 650S with 170 hp more was as fast as GT3? That was disappointing. How can this guy sit there so pleased as if 650S had conquered GT3? And not even mention all the extra power 650S has? And I understand even less all the people commenting here as if this is the prof of English engineering being better than German engineering. Don't they mean the other way around? I honestly had expected much more of this car. More like for it to beat GT2 RS.
I'm a McLaren fan and I totally agree. Modern Porsches basically defy physics.
gweflj I've liked Mclaren cars specially for their performance. If anything I always criticized Mclaren for being heavy on performance and light on flair and drama with their cars. 12C was such a car, a so so design but a lot of performance. I just can't understand how this 650S can only be as fast with this much more power. It's a carbon fiber tube car and everything, which the Porsche is not. Some say it has a softer ride as an excuse. But these are performance cars first and foremost and I had expected much more form 650S.
I agree.. With that powertrain, going 0,2 seconds faster is not a conquering.
Was the GT3 time on wet or dry track? because if it was on wet... my God, that's mind blowing.. anyway, equal performance it's astonishing for GT3 compared to the much more powerful and basically same weight 650S. Can't wait for the RS ..not to mention the next GT2/RS :D

Holy crap. The 650S barely beats a GT3. This means that the GT2 (which is the real 650S competitor considering hp and price) will rape the 650S.

Amazing that the GT3 got so close. No doubt an RS would spank the 650S and a 991 GT2 would be on another planet.
Love to see you guys pit the 650s against the 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale. Near identical spec wise and cost. Unbiased of course. :)
I see most of the comments are slight off in details. Yes 650S does have more hp/tq. This convertible is much heavier then the coupe. The GT3 has around 200lbs weight advantage. The Dunlop Max are more track focused then these Corsa's. Get a 911 Turbo S out here it will be inline with this GT3.
Mclaren does have a track only Sprint GT model on slicks. Even with Trofeo R's it will demolish most here on this track. 918 would have fits with this beast on slicks.
Still got to love what they done to this GT3. Can't wait to see the RS model. I'm hoping they bore it out like the last 4.0 RS.
The Dunlop SP Sport Maxx race tyres are no where near track focused then Pirelli P Zero Corsa, If anything the Corsa are "Slightly" grippier, And tyres are only ONE part of many that make a fast car, The GT3 is only 87Lbs lighter then the 650S Spyder, Not even 100Lbs lol 87Lbs is highly inferior to a alomst 200Bhp and torque difference.
I see you dreaming up stuff for me. Look what you said the Race tires. That right there is a red flag already. Yeah the Corsa's are a upgrade but still a more all performance tire to the track only Max race tires.
And again your weights are off. The 650S coupe is also heavier then GT3. So of course the spyder will be much heavier.
The first Evo mag test with 458 Speciale and GT3 had 650 S spyder highest of the 3.
Just like the 458 crowd the 650S is more of a GT first not like this track nonsense. You and others are trying to compare it to more track focused vehicles. If Mclaren dropped 650S in height like P1 and used Trofeo's for optional track tires. Just more crying oh that's a pure track car like the P1.

GT3 is heavier even than spyder 650S and more hp/tq means faster acceleration but acceleration isn't all. suspension and brakes means much more on track. later braking and more corner speed is better than earlier braking slower cornering and faster acceleration. oh and turbo S can accelerate much faster. can hold same speed (if not more) in the corner as 650s and you say it is inline with GT3?

GT3 lap looks like it was wet compared to the McLaren's lap. Wouldn't that easily account for the 0.2 s difference between the two? Didn't seem to have been mentioned by the reviewer.
I can't believe that the Porsche is able to do the same lap time than the 650S wich has near of 200 more hp...
Was it done in same conditions for both test ? Same driver ?
First off, the GT3 is massively down on power with only 475 HP as compared to the McLaren's 650 HP, not to mention the McLaren is miles more expensive. So, is hardly a fair comparison to begin with. But, then you look at the lap times, even with 175 HP more, it only beat the Porsche by 0.2 sec, that tells you how good the GT3 is. You add that to the amazing sound of the naturally aspirated 3.8L engine of the Porsche, it is definitely the better car pound for pound in the context of the price tag.

How can you get accurate lap times when you're rolling through the starting line? Are you crossing the starting line at the same speed in all the cars you test?
Tight track again. and yes, Porsche always good at tight track with its cup 2. The 650S is still faster than the GT3 tho. The 650S will destroy the GT3 on fast tracks like willow springs, Nurburgring, Laguna Seca etc... Or, with a good sets of tires, it'll destroy GT3 all over the world, any track and any road. Asia, Mid east, America, Europe, everywhere.
This track is too small, get this car to a long track like Navarra Spain or some rings and then see how much better it ll lap than the Porshe

track times have alot to do with how the car is set up plus driver even a second or two is alot faster when it comes to track times

It's a great car but let's not forget that the gt3 recorded its lap time on a wet track.
Surprising the gap relative to the GT3 is not greater. The forthcoming Corvette Z06 will probably settle this for good.

The GT3 991 have all wheel drive traction but not all wheel drive front end handling. Guess what's that mean, all wheel steering.
McLaren need to work on their styling now, no doubt the engineering is top notch but the car lacks the emotion and drama of a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Also interesting to see how it stacks up against the next 458 class Ferrari as that will be turbocharged and lack the noise of the current car.
I'm curious. He didn't start from a stand still.... he flew through the start line at ??? kmh. When the times are that close together, it makes me wonder; did the Porsche cross the start line at the same speed? If the McLaren flew through it at 10, 20, 30 kmh faster, that's obviously an unfair comparison

This is a joke, the GT3 was with wet conditions, but I guess for a british person McLaren is going to be always better, obviously only for some british persons.
I can't believe this is an actual test. A McLaren, A MCLAREN, vs a porsche lol. A McLaren is something you get when you want to be fast...A porsche is something you get when you want to impress the buff, brazillian, pool boy.

Gt3 must have been faster because it was wet when it was tested and it still put a good enough time comparable to McClaren.

i'm a bit disappointed to be honest, on paper the 650s looks like it's on a completely different level compared to the gt3. i'm curious to see the 458 speciale's time.
Either the styling is too abrasive of a move from the 12C or too watered down from the P1. I can't love this car because I watch it and think "that is a really disappointing P1," or "I'd rather watch the 12C." Hope McLaren figures it out because the 650S is too great of a performer to not have it's own individuality.

The GT3 sounds alot better.
The gt3 was in wet, so less grip. Its also 120k cheaper. Also the rs4.0 version would rape that 650s in dry. The 911 turbo s would as well.
Also better sounding engine, and not too flashy while looking badass at the same time so you dont really have to worry about people vandalising your car:)
well. that speaks volumes about the performance of the gt3. still no supercar though.
GT3 still far more impressive given its 175hp deficit over the Mclaren. Thats before you even get to its £100k price advantage too. Would still take the Mclaren though. Then sell it and buy a GT3.

***** But GT3 won't force you to drive as Mclaren sees fit, the mistake by 12C. Everybody makes mistakes but I honestly thought 650S would do much better due to all that extra power. So what is it? A comfortable cruiser with high top speed? You got high performance luxury cars for that and they cost much less. I though it would be quite faster actually. That was a let down.

Looking at that Mclaren lap time, was a disappointment. I love the 650s I thought was going to do lot better, it only just bet a gt3.
His voice sounds exciting, not the same for the face though. For some reason, it bothers me.
Conclusion: the 911 GT3 is FUCKING FAST.
