I would study how other people make covers first, like what certain patterns they use and such, and try to copy it down or apply it to a different song.. it's kinda like doing art, where you just get used to drawing things and using techniques over time (ofc it's not totally that simple, but that's pretty much how I learned :D)
sorry for the late reply.. overall, as long as it's not used to directly gain attention (like in a mashup or playlist), it should be okay! like as background music and stuff is completely fine
