In this free video guitar lesson you will learn how to play 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan played some really nice guitar parts in 1979, incorporating melody with open string root notes creating a hypnotic and flowing guitar sound.
1979 is a good song to play by everyone except a total beginner. The guitar parts can stand on their own even without the vocals. This is one of Smashing Pumpkins biggest hits and for good reason!!
There are in total 3 guitar parts to 1979 and you will find them all explained thoroughly in this video.
Have Fun!! Remember, that without your support at www.GuitarLessons365.com these lesson can't exist. Please show your support in any way you can. Thanks!!

This is great. I have no problem following along. A friend of mine who's on the autism spectrum comes over once a week to play drums for EXACTLY a half hour and sometimes announces that we're going to play "1979." I can play anything I want, but it will blow him away when I play the actual song! Thanks for the 1/2 step down knowledge so I can learn it with the actual song to get it perfect. Awesome job!

You can play anything you want on the guitar, and yet you have to look up how to play a piss easy song on youtube and didn't even know what tuning it was in..hmmm :thonking:

Jake Kennedy I think he was saying he could play anything he wanted as in his friend is saying he’s playing 1979, but he can play whatever on the guitar and his friend wouldn’t care

This song translates awesomely to acoustic guitar. Instead of all the downstrokes I play more of an up and down strumming pattern and when it gets to the chorus and bridge I play most of the chords with all the open strings ringing out. It sounds awesome and it's fun to play. Thanks for your help on this one. It's a great jamming tune

@Damious100 I think you are referring to the first chord of the chorus? If so, yeah that is an E power chord. As for the 365 it means every day of the year. So you can come and watch a lesson everyday of the year and never have to see the same one twice. :) Unless of course you want to. Thanks! Carl..

This is a great lesson. One thing, from watching live videos, on the bridge, Billy plays the B power chord, C# power chord, then open A, A on the seventh fret of the D string, and C# on the 6th fret of the G string, as opposed to the A power chord with the open A string. I hate to nitpick, but I thought it may be helpful. Awesome job, man!
