In this free video guitar lesson you will learn how to play 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan played some really nice guitar parts in 1979, incorporating melody with open string root notes creating a hypnotic and flowing guitar sound.
1979 is a good song to play by everyone except a total beginner. The guitar parts can stand on their own even without the vocals. This is one of Smashing Pumpkins biggest hits and for good reason!!
There are in total 3 guitar parts to 1979 and you will find them all explained thoroughly in this video.
Have Fun!! Remember, that without your support at www.GuitarLessons365.com these lesson can't exist. Please show your support in any way you can. Thanks!!
Lesson Taught By: Carl Brown
This is great. I have no problem following along. A friend of mine who's on the autism spectrum comes over once a week to play drums for EXACTLY a half hour and sometimes announces that we're going to play "1979." I can play anything I want, but it will blow him away when I play the actual song! Thanks for the 1/2 step down knowledge so I can learn it with the actual song to get it perfect. Awesome job!
you're a good friend
How well does he function and get through life? I'm sorry if this seems like a dumb question but my Son is somewhere on the spectrum also.
You can play anything you want on the guitar, and yet you have to look up how to play a piss easy song on youtube and didn't even know what tuning it was in..hmmm :thonking:
Jake Kennedy I think he was saying he could play anything he wanted as in his friend is saying he’s playing 1979, but he can play whatever on the guitar and his friend wouldn’t care
Jake Kennedy this was 5 years ago
I'm pretty knowledgeable in 90's rock guitar repertoire and I can say this teacher is the most accurate on RUclips.
I appreciate your lesson and the double screen. I hope you can make some $$ to keep it up. thanks for your help.
This song translates awesomely to acoustic guitar. Instead of all the downstrokes I play more of an up and down strumming pattern and when it gets to the chorus and bridge I play most of the chords with all the open strings ringing out. It sounds awesome and it's fun to play. Thanks for your help on this one. It's a great jamming tune
billy himself actually picks up and down on acoustic during the second half of the main riff on acoustic. pretty neat
@DavidFUBB Hey thanks for the request. I hope you enjoy learning it!! Carl..
Mesmerizing one to play. Always loved the song since it came out, and now being able to play it…It just sounds&feels even better. Thanks for your continuous hard work Carl, really appreciate the huge repertoire of songs and dear memories you keep on building.
@Damious100 I think you are referring to the first chord of the chorus? If so, yeah that is an E power chord. As for the 365 it means every day of the year. So you can come and watch a lesson everyday of the year and never have to see the same one twice. :) Unless of course you want to. Thanks! Carl..
Been playing for almost a year now and you by far one of best to learn from 👍👍
Goddamn 10 years ago? This guys been around for time
i've been waiting for this one :)
so good ! this is the first song i have ever learned on guitar and you teach so well ! thank you:-)
Great lesson man. I suck at guitar but you made it so easy for me to learn my favorite song, you're the best.
Absolutely fantastic! Cheers!!
merci so much from France, love this song
Love it, thank you! :D
This is a great lesson. One thing, from watching live videos, on the bridge, Billy plays the B power chord, C# power chord, then open A, A on the seventh fret of the D string, and C# on the 6th fret of the G string, as opposed to the A power chord with the open A string. I hate to nitpick, but I thought it may be helpful. Awesome job, man!
Do you think how you saw Billy doing it live is how it’s done on record? Just wondering.
This is a really good lesson - well done!

I should have let you teach me this years ago. Thanks for another great person.
Your one of my favorites.
buen tutorial gracias
uh he was doing us a favor by teaching in standard so we can tune it later if we choose to most people that are starting out are not good at tuning yet
in the first part rather than doing the bend and the other notes you can just hold the Asus2 like shown in the video it works, i like doing the regular intro then when vocals come i play the chord
Thank you.
thank you.
great lesson. any chance of covering some of the heavier stuff on mellon collie like zero, XYU, bodies and boys fear to tread? thanks
Awesome lesson! Carl if you're reading old posts...since you own the EJ signature guitar...could you teach us Victory off of his Tones album? ;-) That song and Soulful Terrain got me into a whole new genre of music back in the day! Thanks brother for all that you're doing with these free lessons.
I have learned a lot from you
Holy shit dude. I fucking love you
thanks so much! didn't think such an amazing guitar part would be relatively simple
Then you should work on being less prejudiced and less of an idolater. Ceasing to use words like "amazing" would help a lot.
@@ajb7786 fuck u talking about
@@ajb7786 jeez chill he’s not allowed to appreciate music?
how are you continuously picking while switching notes like that? Are you just hitting the A sting or both?
I know this is an old video, but do you know how to make the audio effect on the first slide like it sounds on the studio version? Or is it just added effect?
Dude I'm so happy at least I got the intro lol
Thank's Teacher ! I am Brazilian and I very happy because this !!! Once again: Thank You so much !!! Bye !!!
Stay safe out there
Please!!!! Do a cherub rock smashing pumpkins lesson!!!!!!
at 7:02 are you refering to a power cord? it kinda looks like one? idk xD omg thank you SOO much when i saw this done im like no way can i do that but its actually pretty easy thx man ur a great teacher! *(ur website guitarlessons365 is the 365 part refering to the amount of days in a year 365? or did u just get 365 from the top of ur head? anyway thx!
Awesome explanation. Was easy to learn. Thank you!
What is the strum pattern for the chords?
YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA
I believe so, nice voice
Excellent lesson, always loved this song, thank you!
Hey, great lesson. By the way, is your Stratocaster an American Special one? Cause i got the same! Cheers.
Nikolai Bentchev It's an Eric Johnson signature model. :)
Can I ask how would you know to use those specific "weird chords" which makes the song sound perfect? Basically how did corgan know those chords would work? (the weird chords are the x97900 for example, it's weird since its isent popular ..)
Can you do a lesson on Mayonnaise (acoustical version preference). There are a lot of whack versions out there and you are always spot on. thanks!!!
Can you do Luna also by the s
Smashing Pumpkins, thanks again dude you make amazing tutorials 🙌
@CrimsonGetsu There is a video of Billy playing this on acoustic on Chis Isaac show.
thank you thankyou thankyou thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!! seriosuly thankyou
Can you do soft by vacations???
Carl, I really appreciate your lessons and have used more than a few. Is there a simple way to make one-time financial contributions to you for the service of your videos? Patreon seems to only allow allow monthly subscriptions.
hey, do you think you can make some tabs because those will help for some of the chords
Thanks Carl, I'm the one who suggested you to teach us this song :) Too bad I'm abroad and I don't have a guitar with me :( I have to wait till next week
❤ peace
For the Emaj7 chord could you play it with my ring finger on the A of the ninth, my index finger on the D of the seventh, and my middle finger on the G of the eighth?
Im a total beginner but im still going to try and learn how to play my favorite song of all time. Im a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan.
and also, i have a question, can you post a video on how to play the song called Whole Wide World by Wreckless Eric?
Just watched this there is a open f major as the last cord of the song. You see Billy Play this live and is the same as the recording!😉
@CrimsonGetsu its meant for Nylon acoustic :)
Lmao at the guy who said DOES THIS WORK ON ACOUSTIC
😂
What tuning is it in then? First fret? second fret? thrid, forth fret?
These videos would be a lot more helpful to beginners if in addition to/instead of blurred vision of your left hand, you showed accompanying tabs to eliminate uncertainty.
And when I try to do that twangy thing the note cuts out before I even get to move the string up and down? I'm like 5 minutes into guitar and hating it.
So what is that cool guitar effect on that opening section on the original recording? love it
That’s a vocal part you’re hearing, Billy corgan actually saying “to die young”
Thank you! Very detailed and clear!!
Nice sound and nice lesson. If you could tab the chords too that would be awesome instead of "4th finger on sixth sting on second fret" and bla bla. Still I appreciate it very much. I just had to pause it and tab it myself. Sounds great and Thanks again.
Would you be able to cover more smashing pumpkins? Maybe “Here is No Why” or “Soma”?
