Kay Adams Reacts to Vikings signing WR Justin Jefferson to Four-Year $140 Million Contract Extension

Justin is now the highest paid non-QB in the league - jumping Nick Bosa. $88.7 mil of that is guaranteed, which also sets a new record for non-quarterbacks.
And while it resets the market…it’s honestly not a bad deal for Minnesota either. We were hearing $40 mil get thrown around…Justin probably would have gotten that if he hit the open market. But he gets the security and the guaranteed money, and the Vikings get to lock up their superstar for the next 4 years.
And the timing of this is perfect for the Vikings as well. As I’ve outlined before…it’s really hard to pay both your QB and Wide Receiver top money and contend. The choice for Kwesi to move on from Kirk Cousins was about giving the organization the flexibility to keep Justin on board without destroying the rest of the roster. They have Sam Darnold making just $5 mil this year and JJ McCarthy on a rookie contract…that’s what put them in a position to get this done. And on the face of it…I know it seems wild to choose a receiver over a QB…
But Justin is not just any receiver. I mean this is still so wild to me. Those 98.3 yards per game are heads and shoulders above any receiver to ever do it. And I love Kirk…but at his age…coming off the achilles - I think it was the best choice for the organization long term.
Now, of course it’s not going to be looked at that way if the QB spot doesn’t pan out…but whoever it ends up being is going to be in a position to thrive with Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson, and Aaron Jones in the mix. It’s a phenomenal situation. There are still going to be those questions around the QB until we see them take the field, but I like how the Vikings have set themselves up in an offseason that’s been filled with some really tough decisions.

Just a detail quibble: While yes, Darnold is on a "technically" a $5m deal this year, the signing bonus is pro-rated over 5 years, so they are on the hook for $10m total for Darnold for one year. Pretty clear from OverTheCap.
