The Westminster Standards are great, but Presbyterians often forget the other half of the faithful confessional church, so I would suggest adding The Three Forms of Unity (The Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession and the Canons of Dort).
YES! I grew up in the Dutch tradition which affirms the Heidelburg Catechism as well as the Belgic Confession and Canons of Dordt. Since my church recently left the RCA, and now affiliates with the PCA I have read and completed a Legioner online course on the Westminster. As a lay person, I don't see any doctrinal differences between them; both catechisms are Reformed and should be acknowledged as such.
Just to give my input, reformed daily lift goes Scripture #1, Valley of Vision #2, and then a solid reformed commentary #3(Matthew Henry). All study is vanity without prayer, our time must be spent in communion and the Valley of Vision is easily one of the most useful jump off aids in proper thinking in prayer. Especially if you are like me with little ones and having to wake up at 3am in order to get ministry work done before going to work to pay the bills.
Unfortunately, many Presbyterians, after encountering phrases like 'Sacramental/mystical union,' 'Baptism communicates the graces of regeneration and remission of sins,' 'Holy Communion communicates the body and blood of Christ and its benefits,' and 'Sacraments are means of salvation,' dismiss these doctrines outright. These teachings, integral to Reformed sacramentology and affirmed in all confessional documents and writings of the Reformed tradition, are often discarded without consideration. For some reason if the subject is Sacrament, it will be completely deleted from the student's mind in the process.
No . I am truly Catholic but I enjoy watching your channel. I agree on a number of things such as “worshiptinament”. And you seem to be a serious and devout Christian.
People, do yourself a favor and listen to the pastor. Get this edition of the creeds and confessions. I listened to him a long time ago and use this book everyday. It’s excellent.
I have the Banner of Truth edition of the WCF and it includes Sum of Saving Knowledge. And my Westminster Reference Bible from TBS has the metrical psalms . Winning 🏆
If TR is defined by the Westminster Standards does one consider people who would define themselves as reformed who come from Dutch Reformed Church who hold to the Three Forms of Unity? Would John Owen, a congregationalist who helped create the Savoy Declaration be considered TR, or the great American Congregationalist Jonathan Edwards who was also a Congregationalist. Does Francis Turretin make the cut? As a Baptist I avoid the term "Reformed Baptist" for two reasons. First many who do call themselves Reformed Baptists tend to be too pugnacious when arguing their positions, second since many Paedobaptists are often bothered by Baptists using the term I happily surrender it to them. If asked I typically call myself a Strict and Particular Baptist in the tradition of Keach, Gill and Spurgeon.
Calvinistic Christian, and I say it like that because I don’t like to refer to myself as a Calvinist. All 5-points of the Sovereign Grace Doctrine. I’m not Reformed, but that seems like a great gift package. Blessings.
Thank you Matthew, as a one year Reformed believer, this helps me to continue my walk. I do have the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechism. I use KJV or EVS Bible. I read books by Puritan ministers’ and their sermons.
Catholic, Orthodox, Reformed, Anglican, Coptic, Maronite, Pentecostal, etc., etc. All the various denominational polities are historical and cultural artifacts that have been useful to the Spirit to carry his gospel message across the centuries. Do you express his love for people through your actions in this life?
Hello, Pastor Matthew, I was raised in a Methodist church, which I have left for obvious reasons. I have been on medical leave off and on since November of 2023, and after much struggle with my physical and emotional health, I have been spending more and more time studying God’s Word. I believe this is what has literally saved me in every way. I was not saved before, even though I thought I was. I have been watching (and learning) from your videos as well as others. So, I now have a question that makes me feel a little ignorant; what are the types of theology and how do I know to which one I subscribe? You’d think I’d know this, but I’ve learned so many things over the past year, and one thing I’m certain of is how VERY little I really know.
For me it was discovering that the entirety of the Presbyterian Church had not abandoned our Creeds and Confessions, I got started with RC Sproul’s What is Reformed Theology.
The Book of Concord should've got a mentioned ;) although I will admit I seem to be more influenced by Van Til. I have the Valley of Vision, and it is incredibly profound to oray them aloud.
A possible addition on the heart side of what Puritans sometimes called “true religion,” touching on the heart might be “Religious Affections” by the great Jonathan Edwards.
I'm not really sure what I am. My younger sister is the theologian of the family, and during one of our discussions about a few Scriptures, I said something that caused her to say, "I didn't know you were able Calvinist". My answer was, "What's that?" I was saved in February, 1988. I was truly born again the following year. Both of the churches were non denominational. When my husband and I moved from California to Arkansas in 2001, we attended a Baptist church, though we never professed to be of that denomination. I know that I love the Lord and I cherish the Word of God. Other than that, I say I'm a Christian, when asked.
Ive got about 60% of the list already. Assuming I swap the Westminster for the 1689 LBC. Good list brother, The Valley of Vision is a great one, we use it for family worship. Piercing Heaven is another one of a similar style but i do prefer The Valley of Vision myself. Beeke's Family Worship Bible Guide is also useful.

You mean how about John Calvin theology don't you? I know what the Bible says. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. 1 Timothy 2 : 3-6 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 I have been told by Calvinists that there are Calvinists in the Bible! I was outraged at first, but now I see it is true! The Bible talks about Calvinists in the Bible. They are in every verse below. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 2 Timothy 4:3 3 So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes Ephesians 4:14 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites,[a] and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. Romans 16:17-18 The only ones who don't know that they are the ones described in the Bible are the Calvinists themselves. Ironic and sad. TRUTH IN LOVE
I've got a very large theological library and have moved many times over the past 10 years and every time I do as I pack more and more boxes I think of, "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. (Ecclesiastes 12: 12) I now have a house near the ocean in Half Moon Bay California... hopefully I won't have move AGAIN!
TRs know, as a Dutch man, its pronounced "Lou-ee" Berkhof 😂. Aka Uncle Louis in the Christian Reformed Church. Why not just go straight to Berkhof's source and read Bavinck's Dogmatics? :) (abridged version works if you need to get it in one box)
I have a LOT to buy it seems as I am missing most of those.... I would add the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, the 1619 Canons of Dort, and the 95 Theses of Martin Luther in there as well however..
Serious question. I used to hate Calvinism with a passion (I was in a cult) but now fully embrace it. However I still have a lot to learn… is there a difference between Calvinism and reformed theology ?
I would say if you are referring to Calvinism as the 5 points. I would say all Reformed Christians would affirm the 5 points, but not all people who are Calvinists (believe the 5 points) are not Reformed. Issues such as sacramentology, polity, and hermeneutics separate both
Calvinism is a part of Reformed Theology. Honestly, every point of Reformed Theology comes from what we call Covenant Theology. I’d recommend studying that
I actually have a two shelves of Reformed books. I would have 6 or 7, but I have several Reformed books on Kindle. Everything you mentioned I have except ... the 4 books you wrote. I will have to remedy that. One could make a case for the Reformation Heritage Study Bible as well. The Reformation Study Bible commentary is a bit better, true. However, included in the RHSB notes is Joel Beeke's Family Worship notes, and the Heidelberg Catechism with scripture references is included along with the other two Dutch Reformed standards and the Westminster Standards. I like the Heidelberg Catechism as much as the Westminster Catechisms, not more or less. When you aren't looking, I'll slip Morning and Evening by Charles Haddon Spurgeon in the box. 🙂
With the Institutes of the Christian Religion, you can read items such as Book IV, Chapter 18, No. 1: "By these and similar inventions, Satan has attempted to adulterate and envelop the sacred Supper of Christ as with thick darkness, that its purity might not be preserved in the Church. But the head of this horrid abomination was, when he raised a sign by which it was not only obscured and perverted, but altogether obliterated and abolished, vanished away and disappeared from the memory of man-namely, when, with most pestilential error, he blinded almost the whole world into the belief that the Mass was a sacrifice and oblation for obtaining the remission of sins. I say nothing as to the way in which the sounder Schoolmen at first received this dogma.I leave them with their puzzling subtleties, which, however they may be defended by cavilling, are to be repudiated by all good men, because, all they do is to envelop the brightness of the Supper in great darkness. Bidding adieu to them, therefore, let my readers understand that I am here combating that opinion with which the ROMAN ANTICHRIST and his prophets have imbued the whole world- viz. that the mass is a work by which the priest who offers Christ, and the others who in the oblation receive him, gain merit with God, or that it is an expiatory victim by which they regain the favour of God. And this is not merely the common opinion of the vulgar, but the very act has been so arranged as to be a kind of propitiation, by which satisfaction is made to God for the living and the dead. This is also expressed by the words employed, and the same thing may be inferred from daily practice. I am aware how deeply this plague has struck its roots; under what a semblance of good it conceals its true character, bearing the name of Christ before it, and making many believe that under the single name of Mass is comprehended the whole sum of faith. But when it shall have been most clearly proved by the word of God, THAT THIS MASS, HOWEVER GLOSSED AND SPLENDID, OFFERS THE GREATEST INSULT TO CHRIST, suppresses and buries his cross, consigns his death to oblivion, takes away the benefit which it was designed to convey, enervates and dissipates the sacrament, by which the remembrance of his death was retained, will its roots be so deep that this most powerful axe, the word of God, will not cut it down and destroy it? Will any semblance be so specious that this light will not expose the lurking evil?" [Beveridge translation, P. 866, ntslibrary website, Institutes of the Christian Religion, pdf 874 of 944]
Amen. That was excellent...Thank you. I have that version of Calvin's Institutes...but am only on page 350 ish. I am currently reading Francois Turretini's Elenectic Theology Volume 1. Excellent reads ...Plus of course Daily Bible study. God is good...God Bless 🌷.
Yes, I am truly reformed. No, I don't believe in Covenant Theology. These terms should not be synonymous. Covenant Theology is a presuppositional framework applied to the Bible which cannot be proven by scripture. It creates covenants that are not called covenants in the Bible. Yes, at one time, when I had become convinced of God's sovereignty and the doctrines of grace, I gravitated toward and adhered to Covenant Theology. As time went on I found myself, like many promoting "reformed theology," becoming smug and condescending towards the so called "unreformed." Having right, so called "doctrine," was more important than imitating our Lord Christ Jesus. I became worthy of the rebukes in 1st and 2nd Timothy (1 Tim. 1:5-11, 2 Tim. 2:14-16). After studying Paul's epistles, I realized sound doctrine has more to do with proper behavior than with lofty musings about God's plan and character which go beyond all scriptural warrant. The New Covenant replaces the Mosaic Covenant. It is not a new administration of the Mosaic Covenant. To miss that is to miss the whole point of the New Covenant. And just for your information, no, I am not a dispensationalist, antinomian, or hold any other ism that you can quickly dismiss. I'm just becoming a thoughtful reader of scripture, in its context, rather than dropping preprogrammed systematic theology nuggets into the word.
Only the saved, (I.e chosen by God) can trust in Christ alone for their salvation, unbelievers HATE God. Do you hate or trust him? Do you love him? Do you slowly show a life of bearing fruit? Not that your sanctification (growing more like Christ) is what saves you, not that it justifies you or not that it keeps you in a justified state. But true believers show a life of repentance, and sorrow for their sins towards God in a humble manner. I recommend looking at the canons of dort, Belgeic confession, and the Heidelberg catechism.
@DrGero15 I think the issue I would have with that would be that it's not subjective for the person who the spirit is working on. It's personal and objective for that person, and since it is a personal question, I think it's fine to say that. Now, if the question was "How do you know that someone else is saved?" I agree that it wouldn't work.
Reformed from what... their seems to be treads of division in this reform! Which hand is this originating from, the hand selling your stuff or the hand of a better reform. This seems to much like others that package their materials at the very counter of the better way gospel. I do think that you mean well and is a loving brother, because I may not agree with this one, I still would like to listen to you. You do have alot to build up the body of believers... John
Interesting. When I share the Gospel with someone my starter kit includes just one thing, the Bible. If they are genuinely seeking the Lord, John 16:13 tells us that The Lord Jesus gives new believers the Holy Spirit to guide them towards His truth. Nobody needs a man's point of view, especially a 26 year old theologian who thinks he actually thinks he knows everything there is to know about God! Talk about arrogance! Calvinism is heretical.
This does demonstrate a lack of what should be a core component of reformed theology. Who is wise and understanding among you...I used to call myself a reformed baptist but I think I'll stick with particular Baptist now. It's historic, it's a better term.
With all of this theology...it sounds like the 600 extra commandments the Jews added...when Jesus was dealing with the Jews in the New Testament. Just give me Jesus, and the Bible.
Another stocking stuffer idea the whole reformed family can enjoy singing together round the Christmas fireplace. "Jesus loves me, this I know. As for you, I don't think so. Only some to Him belong. We are right and you are wrong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! But I hope this isn't effervescent grace that I'm walking in and instead I'm actually deceived and one of the reprobates that He created to burn as a candle for His glory in Hell forever."
@@jolookstothestars6358 A person should never be ashamed what they believe. Reformed Calvinists most eagerly believe what i put down in the comments. But who am I (I am a Christian) This Reformed pastor has made things even clearer of what they believe. John Piper and John MacArthur are in agreement. Here is the exact Quote from John Piper word for word "... " God . . . brings about all things in accordance with his will. In other words, it isn’t just that God manages to turn the evil aspects of our world to good for those who love him; it is rather that he himself brings about these evil aspects for his glory (see Ex. 9:13-16; John 9:3) and his people’s good (see Heb. 12:3-11; James 1:2-4). This includes-as incredible and as unacceptable as it may currently seem-God’s having even brought about the Nazis’ brutality at Birkenau and Auschwitz as well as the terrible killings of Dennis Rader and even the sexual abuse of a young child . "
@@greganderson5981 I hope you are angry enough to check out if it is true! Reformed 5-point Calvinism is a modern day Cult. Might I suggest you take a look at 1 Dr Flowers Soteriology 101 2 Dave Hunt What Love is this 3 David Pawson 4. Faith on Fire 5 Idol Killer I was angry enough to listen to your Calvinist teachers. But I didn't hide from them. I listened and rejected their teaching as a Christian Denomination. Because there is no Gospel in it.
I have some stocking stuffer ideas. How about this short bedtime story for children of Reformed parents. It smooths over those difficult questions their children will ask in an easy way. LITTLE JOHNNY Johnny, God has predestined the minority of people to be saved and go to heaven forever, and He has predestined the majority of people to be eternally damned and burn in the fires of hell. We have no idea, little Johnny, if God has predestined you to be forever damned or forever saved. We love you, little Johnny, but we accept the fact that God might not love you, and that He may have plans to send you to hell for your future sins. If you do find yourself one day burning in hell because He hasn’t elected to save you, just remember that we will always love you, even if God hates you. Take comfort knowing that we are not like God. We will be in heaven forever only because we were unconditionally chosen for salvation before we were born. That would be the only reason that we won’t be in hell with you if you find yourself there. It won’t be because of anything we did. So also take comfort in knowing that. It may not seem fair, but who are we to judge God? So again, if you find yourself in hell, remember that we will always love you as we forever worship the God who loved us but who hated you, the God who sent His Son to die for us but not for you. Please, we ask, don’t let it bother you-if you find yourself in hell-that we love the God who hated you and showed you no mercy. We must accept the fact that God is sovereign, and He does what He pleases.
How do you know only a few people are elected? "Many are called but few are chosen" was directed at the Jews Jesus Christ was sent to first. The Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed because few of those Jews believed. But, what about Jews and Gentiles in the future? The Apostle Paul wrote that Christ died for the many. How do we know what percentage of mankind make up the Elect? We don't. It messes up the TULIP, but I prefer Particular Redemption to Limited Atonement. I am not not try to flame you. I am just giving a different outlook on Reformed Theology than many of its critics give.
@bigtobacco1098 that's not testing spirits. That's picking in gossiping behind somebody's back. You don't sit there and poke at each other with your elbows shredding another person before you even get to know them. Who cares if they believe exactly like you do or not. That's just rude. Horrible manners.
👿 let me help convince you that John 3:17, 12:32, 12:47, Acts 17:30-31, 2 Corinthians 5:18-19, 1 Timothy 2:3-6, Titus 2:11, Hebrews 2:9, 2 Peter 3:9, 1 John 2:2 & Revelation 22:17 do not mean what they say. C'mon hath God indeed said? Surely only some will be irresistibly regenerated?
Thanks for sharing this. I've been studying Reformed theology for years and have Reformed degrees and I have never seen this before. This is mind blowing! How did over 500 years of the best minds miss this. And here you are a simple layman able to shed such profound and erudite light to something we have all missed.
@@carlmoore6674 Actually a Pastor in my 60s that has led many out of Calvinism & towards a biblical understanding of why God sent His Son. Which was/is to redeem/rescue/ransom EVERYONE that will & CAN call upon Jesus for salvation. Only redeeming a pre-chosen few gives 👿 more souls after his hoodwink-bamboozle in the Garden. Biblical Christianity: God sends His Son to redeem "whosever will" from the sting of death caused by sin/Satan's scheme averted. Calvinism: Man-inspired theology where Satan's scheme was/is accomplished towards most of humanity, as few are unconditionally elected to turn to Christ via irresistible coercion & most will get the wrath they deserve for God's egoic glory.
@ this is the problem with using the word reformed. Every church that came out of Catholicism is reformed church. If it weren’t, then it would be Catholic still.

You might consider the Trinity Psalter Hymnal as combining Book of Psalms for Worship in the red Trinity Hymnal.
I’m only Reformed in a broad sense. I align a bit closer to Luther on a lot of stuff but I’d still call myself a three point Calvinist.
If you’re not a 5 point Calvinist, you’re not a Calvinist.
Lutherans are monergistic in salvation, do affirm unconditional election, and hold to an idea similar to "total depravity".

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
I have been told by Calvinists that there are Calvinists in the Bible!
I was outraged at first, but now I see it is true! The Bible talks about Calvinists in the Bible. They are in every verse below.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 2 Timothy 4:3 3
So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes Ephesians 4:14
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites,[a] and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. Romans 16:17-18
The only ones who don't know that they are the ones described in the Bible are the Calvinists themselves. Ironic and sad.

You mean like Geehardus Vos?
Oh please tell me what other man made book I need to be saved. You must know best.
What is the reformed view of eschatology in your opinion? MacArthur - dispensationism?
No... millennial
Do you agree with this statement? No one is saved by any "ism", weather calvin"ism" or traditional"ism".
Do you hold to trinitarianism ??
@bigtobacco1098 Yes I believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit all distinctly different roles but One God.
@jolookstothestars6358 Jesus is not the father

TRs know, as a Dutch man, its pronounced "Lou-ee" Berkhof 😂. Aka Uncle Louis in the Christian Reformed Church.
Why not just go straight to Berkhof's source and read Bavinck's Dogmatics? :) (abridged version works if you need to get it in one box)
Will "Hold Fast the Faith" be released on Audible at some point? Thanks
It's on Audible now with AI reading.
@MatthewEverhard I don't see it, only three titles are listed under your name. Is it possible that it's not available outside the US?
I’d recommend studying that
Colloquially, no not really any difference.
Good list. I have heard Presbyterian ministers use 'TR' almost as an adjective of abuse, or at least mockery.
I thought it was going to be a review of Logos's Reformed Starter Pack. Lol
It’s funny how Catholic this sounds. Might as well call it the TR Magisterium.
Thank you for the info...

With the Institutes of the Christian Religion, you can read items such as Book IV, Chapter 18, No. 1:
"By these and similar inventions, Satan has attempted to adulterate and envelop the sacred Supper of Christ as with thick darkness, that its purity might not be preserved in the Church. Will any semblance be so specious that this light will not expose the lurking evil?"

Amen. That was excellent...Thank you. I have that version of Calvin's Institutes...but am only on page 350 ish. I am currently reading Francois Turretini's Elenectic Theology Volume 1. Excellent reads ...Plus of course Daily Bible study. God is good...God Bless 🌷.
Calvin's Book "The Necessity of Reforming The Church." Was also good .. probably not as deep as the Institutes though. 🙏

I wonder how many of these Redemeed Zoomer has🤔
My quick answer. No, I'm not. Unless of course you're using the broadest term, which means non-Lutheran Protestant.
Why would anyone want to be reform when I can be a Christian?
How do I know if Im saved or not within Reformed theology?
Because you are
The testimony of the Spirit.
A subjective feeling which might only be evanescent grace.
Well now, this video has certainly triggered a few bods…
This does demonstrate a lack of what should be a core component of reformed theology. Who is wise and understanding among you...I used to call myself a reformed baptist but I think I'll stick with particular Baptist now. It's historic, it's a better term.
Reformed Baptists aren't TRs. 😊
With all of this theology...it sounds like the 600 extra commandments the Jews added...when Jesus was dealing with the Jews in the New Testament. Just give me Jesus, and the Bible.
0:41 So, I guess I’d I’m not a TRist I’m not to run with you guys… 🤦🏻♂️ truly sad 😢

But who am I (I am a Christian)
This Reformed pastor has made things even clearer of what they believe.
I was angry enough to listen to your Calvinist teachers. But I didn't hide from them. I listened and rejected their teaching as a Christian Denomination. Because there is no Gospel in it.
Im still getting over “Evan-Jellyfish.”
Why are you here? You Arminians are *Not* Welcome! *Begone* ! and take your *Heresy* with you!
