Moral of the story, don't let go of the things you love in life. You'll end up regretting it later on. I own the Optima re-release. I always wanted the original back in my youth, but I was way too young to afford it. It was a joy to build. I rarely run it. It's basically a shelf queen.
Can’t wait to see how it all comes out. Glad it had a cool motor in it. I never even looked. Took a quick look at the car and put it right back in the box and sent it. In my mind it was yours when I bought it. So cool.
The kyosho kits from back in the day were quality I can’t deny Glen.. The optima buggies won everything at our Sunday morning club back then.. I always remember going into the Red Baron model shop most Saturday’s just to stare at the shelves.. what became very apparent was my paper round money was never going to quite stretch to the kyosho gear🤣🤣🤣. Ah great memories once again Glen 👍👍👍
My goodness your comments are so relatable for me personally! I too would go the Model Shop every Saturday and just drool over all the cars, motors, batteries etc! And I too had a paper round! But also, aged 13, I also started a Milk Round job! I would be outa bed at 4am Monday to Saturday, working milk round before school, then work Saturday milk round until around 1pm, then do my Saturday paper round deliveries, then straight on a bus, then a train, up to Formby Models! I also worked Thursday and Friday nights collecting milk money after school and paper round deliveries!! 😱 I was utterly EXHAUSTED come Saturday afternoon on the train up to model shop, and on more than one occasion I fell asleep on Train and missed my train stop!! 🤦♂️😂. And even with my wages from 2 jobs ( £7/week paper round wages, £20/week milk round wages ) I was still unable to afford the really special kits like the Tamiya Avante’s or Tamiya Top Force etc!! ( as a side note, we were a poor family even though both my parents worked, I assume it was because there was 5 bro’s n sis’s, and my parents wages simply couldn’t afford to buy myself n siblings expensive Christmas presents!? ) I would give all my wages to the model shop every week and pay off things. My entire week was always based around the excitement of my weekly trip to the Mode Shop!! And oh my goodness was it a VERY EXCITING TRIP if I was due to make a final payment and pick up my latest rc product like a new motor, or a new set of wheels, or the ultimate, A BRAND NEW TAMIYA KIT!!! 😍😊 Those are magic memories that I cherish! *really sorry fir such a long message!! I just get carried away with the nostalgia!! 🤦♂️😂👍 Wes, Liverpool UK
When I was a kid I didn't race, but regularly went to race meets. Optimas, Cats, the odd Tamiya, and even Mugen Bulldogs were the rage. My neighbour had a PB Mini Mustang and kept up with most of them. Lovely memories of a much simpler time
Hello Glenn. Interesting content 👍as always. Great Optima Pro project, I believe the body set you have is from KAMTEC. I didn't make the Optima Pro body yet 😏. Good luck.
Those rear shocks are Mid Custom...the Mid Custom Special were gold Option House. Great channel mate, I recently went over to the dark side and bought a re re Fighting Buggy and am loving building it 👍
This brings back some fond memories. I remember my dad buying me the Optima Pro 4WD when I was eleven, it had a Stars and Stripes body shell and I had it running on sponge tyres. I used to race it in my school sports hall with the local model club. Love your great videos which bring back some fantastic nostalgic moments for me 👍🏻
I'm totally jealous😍 what a stunning car! Back in the day I Never took much notice of the kyosho range I was tamiya through and through and basically because the ones I did see were never built properly🤦♂️ but lately I've bought a few of the re-releases and I'm completely sold on them👍they are absolute stunning quality! Look forward to seeing the finished buggy and watching it go with that motor!
Hey 👋🏻 Well I’ve now actually just got hold of that Kyosho SPA240WS motor from my childhood, so that will be the motor going in the Pro when it’s ready my friend 😍😍😍
@@TAMIYALegends I've had a spa240 in my collection for years I have it in my turbo optima re-release and it's a super smooth motor very quick considering the age of it I'm just in the process of changing its bearings because something is making a weird noise and I think it's one of the bearings🤷♂️ excellent video keep'em coming 👍
I’m so glad they’ve re released kyosho products. I’d always admired the kyosho stuff from back in the day. I could never afford it back then. Since then ive bought a couple of vintage optimas and all of the releases. I hope they do one of these. Great video Glenn. Thank you
Love the last of the rear motor optima cars. Had that shell on a Salute BITD. All the rear motor Optima cars had the shock mounted on the C Hubs and rear hubs. It changed with the Mids they all had shocks mounted on the arms. With taller upper towers. All the optima body’s are a evolution of the original optima. It’s really easy to spot when they are lined up in order the roof lines just got stretched and lowered and the side pods widened. The original Mid box art body is a modified optima pro body. Really looking forward to seeing this one complete. It’s going to epic.
What a killer buggy!!! They had the best looking bodies of all the RC's. I wanted a Javelin so bad when I was a kid. One kid in our neighborhood got a Pro and once he got some time on the sticks he would beat us most of the time. Awe the good old days!!!!👍👍👍
Omg!! I'm about to paint my Optima Mid and I'm doing white but with the Turbo Optima Mids decals!! I didn't know it would look as good as it would and then I saw the one you used to have! Wow it looks so much cooler than I was even thinking!
Awesome… I always wanted one of those. I remember seeing them in the back of RC modeler magazines in the 80s. It was always out of my price range. I should say, it was out of my parents’ price range because delivering papers did not pay enough!
Awesome looking buggy. The under tray reminds me of the "ground effects" designs they used in F1 where the underside of the car was shaped like an inverted airplane wing. This caused the car to be literally sucked down onto the tracks, enabling much faster cornering because of the huge amount of downforce produced.
Never forget seeing this in the flesh in a modelshop in Detmold germany, it was sat next to an original willy's wheeler in the shop window. Also in detmold at the same time was a department store that had the Marui Samurai fully built, I was lucky enough to get a monster beetle for Christmas that year and the following birthday got a tamiya celica god I loved that car

Lovely car. The Le Mans 240E is actually meant for airplanes. I've seen the winds quoted as 19T x 2. Le mans motors are quoted in seconds with a 1200mah Ni-cd i.e 240 = 240 seconds or 4 minutes.
Back in the day, I didn’t really care much about optima pro and don’t understand why many people raving about it. But after you show the under tray. Wow that is super cool, so sleek. I’m loving it.
Really stoked for this project. Really keen to see the full strip down and rebuild but most of all, the running. It's a stunner for sure. For me, the Lazer ZX and ZXR was THE car to have. A Schumacher beater at my local club I managed to get a ZX Sport which was decent but nowhere near the street cred and performance of the ZXR.

It's funny how times change, come 1993 Tamiya at 1/10th offroad racing level were considered toys, very uncompetitive and fragile. Nice work done on the tires. Yeah Kyosho had better chassis and Tamiya had more attractive body shell and box art. I guess appearance wins out in the end. Kyosho with their re re definitely got my attention.
Hello Glenn, FYI: the front red shocks should be attached at their top to either of the 2 mounting holes, a little bit below where you have them now. That top mounting hole was for the Gold shocks as the were longer, once this is done you can readjust the rear shock to standard, and they will have the same stence.

Glen,I've got to admit when u were talking about how nice the undertray was I just couldn't understand how it could b any different from other undertrays, but when u showed us the undertray I was blown away 🤯 its almost like a 70s f1 ground effect car!! Like an upside down wing for the underneath to generate downforce, I'm wondering if that's why this car runs no rear wing as the undertray is maybe where it generates the downforce 🤔. Just a thought. Excellent vid as always buddy 👌and wow what a car, I've never owned a kyosho 🙄
My local cub had a nobody named Matt Francis LOL ran to a near by carpet track and Joel Jonson show up for the stock class. It sucked to race RC cars in the 80s n 90s in California 😂
That is my first buggy, mine had the tamiya technigold motor and a 8.4 tamiya gold power battery, that thing runs great, my 2nd car is the tamiya hotshot
I believe your 240E was a 19 turn motor and I think they came in some planes. Some one chime in and school me on this....Lol. I've never seen one and I think they are a pretty rare find. It looks great sitting in that pro though!
Hi Glenn. I'm going to start an Optima Pro conversion from my Optima rere. However, I cannot find the window masks and decals. Could you help with point me in the right direct to find them my friend? Love this video!!
Awesome mate, love it. And yes, it is chain drive!! I thought thought the pro would have been belt driven, being a pro. It is an Optima underneath tbh, but what a chassis. Thumbs up mate!!
Nice Pro there Glen, rear shocks would be from the Optima Mid Custom. It was a lower budget basic kit whereas the Custom Special was more up market and had a lot of upgrades including the gold shocks. The Pro's radio plate is plastic but all the earlier versions of the Optima had a carbon fiber (or similar material) radio plate.
@@TAMIYALegends No worries, glad I could help. I've got an Optima Pro project still not finished yet, packed away. Had the repro body & under tray (TBG) professionally painted in box art.
My knowledge (and memory) of Kyosho is a bit dusty from back in the day. Hope maybe someone here can shed some light on something for me. I recall my friend had two Kyosho vehicles. I believe one was an Optima as I do recall it was 4wd and chain driven. The other vehicle he owned however was belt driven. Was that an option from Kyosho for the Optima or possibly the Ultima?
Great video! Complete mystery as to why these got the inferior red shocks-made no sense, kind of like the MID SE with no turnbuckles. I think your color scheme will be great!
Lucky car to have found it’s way to you Glenn gonna be well looked after - my actual optima pro is up for sale on EBAY currently but I can’t afford to buy it back 😂 - I don’t know how they managed to make mustard yellow and brown look so badass on a car but they absolutely did - enjoy it brother I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out!!! The diffs both have bearings but everything else is bushed - at least you only have to take the rear gearbox apart 👍
Love the Kyosho, only got the turbo optima but looking to expand 😁😆 BIT OF A DIC#.... We all know a few of them mate don't we 🤪 Thanks for another great video Glen 👍👌💯
That's nice! I think it's been a while since you had a buggy on the show, right? It's cool to see because back in 80'ies, those Kyoshos were way out of reach to me, so I never seen one before. Looks really nice, especially your old ones, very good paint jobs! Sounds like a good plan, the one you got for this. I'm looking forward to seeing it!
Interesting video....never had a Kyosho buggy or car...just been a Tamiya and Team associated man!....BUT...This makes me want to get one...got to do some research to decide which is the all time classic vintage and start there...looks like it maybe the very first Optima..but I do like the looks of the Javelin. Any suggestions?
Optima mid turbo...wow aint seen one of them for 30m plus years,,,,im a tamiya nut but i have to admit the the mid turbo was way way ahead of anything tamiya had, even the release of the Avante did nothing to bridge the gap in performance terms
Gotta love the Optima Pro, one of my all time favorites too. Just so clean and sleek looking. Will be awesome when it's finished! 👌😍
Thanks Mick 🤩👊🏻

Awesome mate, love it. And yes, it is chain drive!! I thought thought the pro would have been belt driven, being a pro. It is an Optima underneath tbh, but what a chassis. Thumbs up mate!!
Thanks for watching 😎👊🏻
Nice Pro there Glen, rear shocks would be from the Optima Mid Custom.
It was a lower budget basic kit whereas the Custom Special was more up market and had a lot of upgrades including the gold shocks. The Pro's radio plate is plastic but all the earlier versions of the Optima had a carbon fiber (or similar material) radio plate.
Fantastic information Keith thanks for sharing this 🤩👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends No worries, glad I could help. I've got an Optima Pro project still not finished yet, packed away. Had the repro body & under tray (TBG) professionally painted in box art.
Hello friend! Greetings from California! How were you able to paint the white letters on the tires so perfect?
Kyosho kits are top notch, do you think they will do a re release of this car, would certainly love one.
Hmmm not sure now tbh, they really seem to have slowed down with the re re’s 🤯🤷🏼♂️
The Optima Mids were belt driven 🤷🏼♂️
Beautiful car 👍
Great video! Complete mystery as to why these got the inferior red shocks-made no sense, kind of like the MID SE with no turnbuckles. I think your color scheme will be great!
Excellent thanks for watching and commenting my friend 🤩👊🏻
Awesome vintage buggy Glen, im waiting to see if the optima mid se comes back out. Great vid my friend!!!
Oh you would imagine that’s next 😍😍😍
its got mounting points on the front lowers for the suspension you know...
Yeah I believe that’s for the standard Optima shocks 🧐🤷🏼♂️
Lucky car to have found it’s way to you Glenn gonna be well looked after - my actual optima pro is up for sale on EBAY currently but I can’t afford to buy it back 😂 - I don’t know how they managed to make mustard yellow and brown look so badass on a car but they absolutely did - enjoy it brother I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out!!! The diffs both have bearings but everything else is bushed - at least you only have to take the rear gearbox apart 👍
Excellent information Wade thanks for sharing this my friend 🤩👊🏻
Love the Kyosho, only got the turbo optima but looking to expand 😁😆
BIT OF A DIC#.... We all know a few of them mate don't we 🤪
Thanks for another great video Glen 👍👌💯
Thanks Philip 🤩👊🏻
got to love it great video Glenn mate👍👊😊🇬🇧🤟😎
Thanks buddy 😅👊🏻
Very nice mate, did i paint your yellow & brown one? i definitely did one for someone as i still have the pics
You certainly did my friend and I actually know the guy who still has it now 🤩👊🏻
I love the Optima series buggies
Thanks for watching Darren 🤩👊🏻
A quick search seems the 240e lemans was a 19t double. Made for planes
Thanks Michael 😎👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends from what I found the reason it doesn't show up on motor charts of that era is it came supplied as part of a plane gearbox.
Thanks Keith and Caleb!
😍😍😍
I would love one of these
Thanks for watching my friend 😎👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends Its funny as I knew somone who had one of these back in the day and he was a bit of a dick as well :)
Fantastic thanks for watching and commenting my friend 🤩👊🏻
And a progress and a big wig👍
I think you should do box art of the original shell the yellow one.
Just look at her ....Beautiful 😎👌👊
Thanks buddy 😊👊🏻
It’s a great design for mid 80’s, pretty amazing really. Not hard to see why Tamiya struggled on the track.
Thanks as always for watching Wade 🤩👊🏻
i had a Turbo Burns when i was a kid, sure wish i had held on to it
Yeah very cool car 🤩👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends i had not yet discovered loctite so i had trouble keeping it together for very long
Got my Optima Pro rere on pre-order!!
Nice glen 👏 that is going to look the nuts 👏
Thanks Patrick 🤩👊🏻
Also most people who had the pro used a standard control ie 1980s although I personally use the one of the mid or ultima
😁👍 It's a beauty for sure!
Thanks buddy 😎👊🏻
I have had this one.
I didn't know that is best.
Fantastic if you could get hold of a Optima Mid I’m certain you’d absolutely love it 🤩👊🏻
Good times 😊
there she is... the rocky my fave kyosho :D
Do you prefer the Turbo Rocky though? 😍😍😍
@@TAMIYALegends no i genuinely fell in love with rocky original..... :D
Great video
Thank you 😊
I had one. The chain would always stretch.
Optima mid turbo...wow aint seen one of them for 30m plus years,,,,im a tamiya nut but i have to admit the the mid turbo was way way ahead of anything tamiya had, even the release of the Avante did nothing to bridge the gap in performance terms
Great comment my friend , yeah Kyosho made cars for the track, not the car park 😍👊🏻
Sounds like u done it in box art! Lol.. witch is cool👍
So there are lines to cut out the body perfect?
