  • This documentary video from the New England Journal of Medicine, featuring
retired University of Chicago Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education
Anita Blanchard, M.D., reflects on the importance of diversity and mentorship.
As a Black woman training in a field that was (and remains) predominantly
White, she found a sense of belonging thanks to the unconditional support and
encouragement she received from Black senior professor James Bowman, M.D.,
    Ph.D.
Watch as Dr. Blanchard shares the personal experiences and stories that inspire her to strive to increase the diversity of physicians and improve health
and life in the surrounding, largely minoritized, community.
This video is based on a Graphic Perspective by Dr. Blanchard (A Sense of
    Belonging, in the October 8, 2020, issue: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056... ).
The New England Journal of Medicine is the world's leading general medical
journal. Continuously published for over 200 years, the Journal publishes
peer-reviewed research along with interactive clinical content for physicians,
educators, and the global medical community at NEJM.org.

The vast majority of patients want to go to the best doctor, regardless of ethnicity. They don’t want to go to one who got into medical school because the school wanted to “increase diversity.” This stuff worsens trust in the physicians you are trying to promote.

I agree. Just like I don't care what ethnicity a plane pilot is I don't care what ethnicity my doctor is as long as they are competent in their profession.
