On 9 May 1930, the colliery set a European record for the most coal mined by a single colliery in a day, with a total of 6,758 tonnes mined. This record stood for over thirty years. I moved to Peterlee when i was 12 years old from leicestershire, i thought my god where the hell have my parents brought me. When i was 16 i worked in Horden....a place called May belts, When i was about 20 years old i moved back to Leicestershire just before the mines were shut down. One thing i will always remember is the hard working proud miners, i had the greatest respect for them and the work they did under terrible conditions never knowing when the next rock fall would be. Big respect.
