One of the most prepared plaintiffs I have seen on JJ with dates and paperwork. With how organized she is, would have thought she would have looked more into who she hired.
Isn't that interesting. It's almost as though she hired an illegal immigrant with no license to do a bunch of contracting work under the table and was then shocked - shocked! to find her place cleaned out.
Contractors are such scammers. Always go to your friends and family for recommendations of people who actually did work for them, and never mess with someone unlicensed and uninsured. 👎
I used a friend’s referral that did two of their properties. The GC was licensed with a professional business, he still did a shit job and I only started noticing things like the floor squeaking and moulding shifting, wood fencing falling apart weeks to months later. He wouldn’t return any of my multiple calls, texts and emails. This happened 1 months before Covid and everything pretty much closed down for almost a year.
Why are we making fun of the defendant for this? The plaintiff is the one who hired some unlicensed and probably undocumented rando with no contract and no cert, and then is shocked, shocked! to find her houses cleaned out.
Yeah, going to an unlicensed person to get the work done cheaper is never a good idea. The insurance risk alone is too much. Get a reputable licensed and bonded contractor, and get the scope of work in writing, including prices and final delivery dates. Specify all items that are provided or will be provided by the contract (and note which is which). Make sure it lists that final payment will be withheld until an independent inspector signs off on it. Oh, and if there are change orders, make sure all change orders are also done in writing.
😳 I could buy a really nice 3 or 4 bedroom, 2 or 3 bathrooms, big kitchen, living room, 2 car garage, private driveway, a big lot and nice landscaping where I live with $300K!
He looks shady as hell, people need to learn how to exercise better judgement! Do research beyond word of mouth, and have someone supervise your projects and have a legal binding contract!
There are so many fly by night contractors. Both sides benefit from not just having contracts but doing background checks. Know what you're getting into from the start.
I live in a state that doesn’t require a license to be a contractor and people regularly have their down payment stolen and never see the handyman again.
The plaintiff sounds like a really smart well established lady and has all her documents in order. Too bad she got taken advantage of by the defendant and didn’t know he wasn’t licensed
In California especially, confirm with the State Board that the contractor actually has a license, and the license is in good standing. Also get proof of identity , like Driver's license, etc. There are far too many shady and scamming " construction" people out here.
So you are suspected of theft, and deception (not having the appropriate licence so that'd probably mean no insurance), so you go on National TV to be questioned and judged?
$300,000 for a duplex, ea w 2 beds and 3 car garages?!?!?! 😮😮 That is CHEEEEAAAAAAPPPP! And it had to be relatively recent cause she mentioned 2018 so it had to be after that. I wish prices were that low where I live!!!
@@L.Spencer I have no idea what the difference would be based on 2018 to 2024 prices but where I live a house like that now would prob b at least 750,000 if it was a dump. At LEAST a mil, maybe even 1.5 mil and up if in good shape.
Serious and legitimate contractors will never do work on a house without a contract. Bc if something goes wrong, it could be a liability to their business. Never have anything done to your house without a contract.
I'm wondering if he is already doing that type of work and his work is good according to the references, how hard and how much would it cost for him to be licensed as a contractor?!🤔
If I was her I would of done so many things differently. One thing of many I would of put cameras in and out of the home especially if she was not there to watch the property
If you hired a licensed and BONDED contractor… you would have an insurance company to pursue for any wrong doing or negligence. Victimof your own cheapness.
If you hire a contractor without looking up their business info or seeing a contract, you’re either dumb or trying to be shady yourself to be cheap vs hiring a proper contractor. Either case, you’re taking a higher risk gamble and when you lose, you don’t get full sympathy because you chose to not do your due diligence.
You should always have a contract , and confirm a license
And insurance!!!
At least a contract
"I'm a contractor, what would I want to draw up a contract for?"

That's outrageous

Omg?!? How is this not a criminal case?!??😮😮😮
Good for her for being so organized! I also love that hair color on her!
I love how Bird smiled at him knowing he is screwed. 😀
I would never think to check on if a contractor had a licence if he was referred to me. However, I will if I ever need one.
Same thing I was thinking.
I love you both but when the contractor starts work without a contract let that be a hint to you.
Always check. I’ve had places lie and they were not ROC licensed
The plaintiff have all her documents in order🥵
Do👏 NOT 👏USE👏 AN👏 UNLICENSED 👏CONTRACTOR
True!!!
Unlicensed contractor with no contract signed 🤣 it works
Licensed or not they can still steal tf 😂
In California how does anyone do contracting without a license

i honestly wouldn’t think to check either if someone i trust referred him; i’d have assumed 🥴 won’t make that mistake after this case!
He's unlicensed, I don't foresee it going well for him.
Agreed
Narrator: It doesn't.
Not all States Require it.
@@stephaniehowe0973 Here in Cali, they do, for projects worth $500 and up, including labor and materials.

Well, the P did get his name from her friends, but she didn’t know to ask for licensing and insurance.

Funny. Contractors not having a contract. Like they don’t even know why they’re called contractors.
They sure do and that's how they end up in court...

@@fluffin4bean same as people not understanding why indicators are called that.
Hmm even if there is no contract, they usually write up some type of invoice in writing about the work to be commenced.
This is the problem with these “independent contractors.” Stop using them!!!
