Getting in the mood for 2022-23 season by watching videos. My wife wouldn't go film for 2 seconds. Installed a predator 25 hp in my JD 318 two summers ago. Have the original cab, model 49 blower, plow with hydrolics and deck. It's a beast..
Shawn I admire you perseverance in moving this snow but coming from a guy that spends between 50 and 60 hours a winter in my tractor cab moving snow all I can say is its time for an upgrade!
It's just amazing what an old school 14hp Kohler "I think" will do. Kicks the crap out of todays garbage. Awesome to see that old girl still kicking ass!
Remember my late father in law putting a bigger Kohler in his John Deere (had to cut some of the hood out to make it fit)! Chains, wheel weights and a rear hitch with 2 5gallon buckets full of steel punching for weight. Custom drift cutters for extra height! Of couse, a cab with top headlights too! Moved a whole bunch of snow with it.
I’m in PEI Canada. And we get the same storms. I have a 1970 JD 140H3 with the snowthrower. But no cab. But to help with snow blowing on me I put a hydraulic cylinder on the chute deflector. Can drop the deflector in a second. Helps keep the snow off.
Thanks, and you're welcome, Real! If you have a chance, grab a tiller with it. 1) it adds a considerable amount of weight/traction to the rear tires and chains. 2) it demolishes ice buildup at the driveway's end when the snowblower just can't dig in enough. Good luck!
Great video and love those JD140s. I now owe 2, one with mower deck right now (H3) and the other (H1)with a plow, duel rear wheels with chains, sleeve hitch with 2) 40lb suits case weights with a bar though the handles and 4) wheel weights hanging on it. Wish I had a cab, snowblower, and the tiller.
Sounds like you're well equipped already! But the cab is pretty handy and the tiller breaks up ice patches as well as supplying the necessary weight. It required sourcing and buying/installing the PTO shaft assembly, though.
@@shawngrenaud I’m sure the (H3) has the PTO it’s had an oil leak this spring and been at the mechanics shop. Of course I see them on eBay if I end up picking up a tiller and need one. I did buy a Brinly 10” mold broad Plow shortly after buying the (H3). Watching a seed planter right now. Do you mind if I ask you where you are? General Location. I’m northeastern Pa about an hour out of Scranton.
I now got a 120 with a cab and a snow blower. Pick up two tillers 33 this spring along with two more 140s. So I’ve got 3) H3 and 2) H1. Two 54 plow, two different styles cultivators. One of the H3 has the rear hydraulic system with a hydraulic 3-point hitch.
My rig is a 2005 JD GT245 with a snow blower and a Curtis Cab. Area typically gets 120-140 inches per year, but one year got over 200. It really does the job, and the cab keeps the snow from blowing back into my face. This '73 is a nice rig, too.
And they say the old blowers doesnt have it hes a pro, my old lx176 pushes snow with ease. Is the blower a two stage unit and belt operated. Great job sir
Thanks, Robert. Mine's a single stage unit run by the stock JD engine power take-off with electric clutch. It doesn't throw as far as I'd like but it sure beats shoveling.
If you are considering buying one of these old single lung Kohlers, make certain it has not been over bored. They had a tendency to "warp' the block. If you bore one and then sleeve it OK..
OMG!!! what did u do to the 140 just look at that cab omg but it keeps the snow off i have the same tractor but i found an original cab for it but it looks good
Always nice to hear from another 140 owner. My dad bought this one brand new with the tiller and pull hammer-MOTT mower in the Spring of '73. No mods were needed. The soft cab uses existing holes. Absent any true JD cabs in my area, I felt comfort was more important than looks. (I'm really not concerned or impressed by oem correctness-- see my '64 Fairlane.) It gets real cold up here!! In addition, the thing comes off in minutes for summer tilling chores. www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28505
Considering the 140 single Kohler is mightily tasked by the single stage thrower having to maintain high RPM to throw the snow out the chute, that old girl is sure earning her keep - the tractor - not your wife. LOL
@@shawngrenaud Back about the time I turned 40, I decided to treat myself to a walk-behind snowblower so the wife couldnt collect on my insurance. So I bought one I liked (4-stroke 2-stage) and eagerly awaited our first snow. Well, a couple of weeks later, it was coming. They were forecasting 6-8" of snow! So I carefully cleared any and all debris off the driveway the night before. Got up next morning and - beautiful! ~6" of snow. Smooth, white, clean - like a peppermint commercial! Opened the garage door, fired up the blower and was moving down the driveway on the first pass in 2nd gear just tearing up the snow and BANG! - they had thrown an advertising supplement (think newspaper in a plastic bag, we got them about 3-4 times a year and the snow was so deep there was no hint of it) into my driveway the night before; It got jammed between the auger and impeller and slammed it to a stop. Luckily it didnt break the shear key! Took me half an hour to clear it. But once I got it fixed I did the rest of the drive without incident. Then, because my neighbor had let me borrow HER snowblower a couple of times, I figured I would repay her by doing HER driveway. Blew my way down the sidewalk to her place, turned into the drive and - you guessed it - ate her newspaper (I never got the paper so it didnt occur to me). Since this was an entire newspaper it was much thicker and it took me an HOUR to clear this time. But then finished her drive without incident. And to add insult to injury, I had to drive to the store and buy her a replacement paper.
What cab are you running?? I also have a 1973 140H3 currently I have my 54 4way blade on but when I put the 49 blower on my biggest pet peeve is the snow blowing back in my face. I would love a cab to keep the snow off me. Great video! 140's are a tough old machine I love mine
The soft cab is a third party product I bought at the JD dealer nine years ago. I think the brand is Berco but I paid too much for it. Then I saw it on sale at a big box somewhere for about half the cost. Not only does it keep the wind away but it gets nice and toasty in there. I always remove my gloves after a few minutes. This year (due to having installed the fabric too tightly) I had to replace one of the four zippers. I replaced it with velcro. All in all, the cab is pretty tough and has already lasted longer that I anticipated. I would never go back to a cab-less situation.
Shawn Renaud thanks! I want a cab for either my 140 or my 400 as they are and will be my primary snow moving machines, the 400 doesn't have any attachments yet but I'm working on fitting a 2stage blower to it. Last winter when "winter storm Stella" hit my old 140 worked it's behind off moving all that snow and never missed a beat. Does your air filter ever plug up with snow when you get into fluffy or blowing snow conditions? That's the only problem my 140 seems to have
Shawn Renaud I only ever had it happen In the one storm. The snow was so light and fluffy the Intake sucked in all the blowing snow and packed my filter full. Just curious if anyone else had that issue before
2' 9" of snow in a single 12 hour dump. Not being an expert on the subject of snow accumulation, I can only venture a guess that the roof angles must make a difference. The woodshed seen behind the white building has a more level roof and quite a lot of snow buildup, as do the cars.
I’ll bet he’s glad he bought that cab. Worth every penny.
He sure is! :}

Even with your single-stage model 49, the Predator will get enough revs going to move the snow where you want it to go. Have fun!

I've never had the air filter problem you experienced. The soft cab shields the air filter from the rear, at least. Maybe that's the difference.
Shawn Renaud I only ever had it happen In the one storm. The snow was so light and fluffy the Intake sucked in all the blowing snow and packed my filter full. Just curious if anyone else had that issue before
berco makes a soft cab. I have one on my 322
It looks like a camper with a snowblower but it seems to work a heckuva lot better than a Mexican backhoe. (Shovel)
It's strange when you can't see the wheels.🙂 But I'd never go back to clearing snow without the cab's protection.
Todays tractors stall out with that much snow… it’s a shame
Some folks take the side panels off to aid in cooling. Not good when blowing snow. I have a 318 that does all that it should.
Wait til they’re all friggin electric. That’ll be a laugh.
What ??? Is there a little tractor under that cab ? 🤔☺
I swear the thing has wheels!! 😄
And where did u get that soft cab
The JD dealer had it in stock but it's a BERCO and can be bought elsewhere.

Snowblower 2 feet of snow. Explain to me why there's only 4 to 6 inches on roofs.

Some of it will blow off roofs if there's enough wind and the snow isn't too wet.
Don't like winter months in snow country.
…. Вот это настоящая зима, вот это снег …
Yes but it's rare that we get this much in one day.
Of course it’s a white car, There’s 2 feet of white snow on it🤣.
Why is there only a couple of inches of snow on the roofs?
Where is this??
