- This video shows how to take apart and service the Penn model 109. This is similar, but not the same as the model 9 reel, the most noticeable difference being the free spool release and main gear bridge. This video shows key service points including how to replace the drag washers.
I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please "like" it. If you want to see more, please subscribe. Questions? Comments? I reply to all.

Matt - thank you for the kind words of encouragement and for watching! Please let your fishing friends know about my channel. Best wishes. Please stay well. Dennis
It is nice that you show people that just because an old reel does not look so good anymore, it doesn`t mean it has lost it`s usefulness. You also show why
I appreciate good design and manufacture and the older reels certainly had that plus character as well. It is sort of like cars. By today's standards, they all look the same and just feel like copies of everybody else's. Plus, I get a sense of planned obsolesce today that I didn't get with the older generations. Thanks David - stay well - Dennis
I bought a 109 in the early 80's, put a 209 handle on it and caught alot of kings with it but now have it all apart, squeaky clean and will be referring to this helpful video putting it back together tommarow. Thank's! Fish on people
Very nice! That 109 is a classic that will last and last with proper maintenance - Thanks - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle yea, amazed at how tight and smooth it turned out, definitely a quality built reel.
Thank You! I purchased a Penn 109 at a garage sale last week. I followed along with you step by step and it was a complete help. As you can imagine here in the midwest it didn't see much use just needed years of corner neglect and old grease cleaned out. It's ready to go now.
Great to hear you have given the reel a 2nd Chance. Thanks for the note - best wishes for great fishing - Dennis
I just did the same thing I'm anxious to try it for some big cats
Your video catalog is a wonderful resource- thanks Dennis!
You are welcome. Please stay tuned as I am constantly adding new projects - Dennis
I think you are referring to the spool gear. It goes on the spool as opposed to the yoke on the model 9 when you service the 109 - Dennis
I found a 30-109s in the trash and can't wait to bring it back to life and use it
Best wishes on your project. You should be able to restore that reel. Good luck - Dennis
Wow. I've never seen any reel that was that dry inside. It's probably never been serviced before now.
Good videos. Informative and easy to watch.Well done sir 👍
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching. Please stay tuned - Dennis
Thank You! This video help me a lot!
Glad it helped! Thank you for watching - Dennis
Look good with new chrome on it now.
These are fun reels to use. Generally, I don't restore these due to cost, but this one would look nice with some new chrome pieces - Thanks - Dennis
Well done. Thanks just took mine apart. What grease do you use?
I use Penn Precision reel grease and oils
@@2ndChanceTackle ok thanks
Ditto, on the Reel beauty, as long as it works when it needs to works.
You've said it all in my mind. Thanks for the note - Dennis
This a great video.i just got one from a flea market with a usa zebco rod to get going on a budget for catfishing.mine has 2 green small grips on it tho so I'm assuming it's pretty old maybe 60s I don't know
The 109 was one of the first reels that Penn introduced and was originally released in 1942. If you have the plastic spool, then the reel is older than the ones with the metal spool. Either way, sounds like you got a good deal. Best wishes Catfishing - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle it's metal spool.only problem is the plastic handles are deteriating.so I'm searching for that.u thank I need model specific handles or are they universal on the Penn conventional reels?I don't care of it's model correct as long as it fits
I have a 109-30 given to me I’m a lefty my question is does the handle always turn even when casting I was told they do called knuckle buster I’ve haven’t used it yet but I thought the Ain’t- reverse would lock the spool to real in am I wrong. And how long turn around time for repair and service and average charge for the 109-30 thanks
Bob - The 109 will spin backwards when casting. That is by design. The free spool lever only releases the anti-reverse dog and not the pinion gear, so that gear stays engaged and the reel spins backwards during casting.
For repair information, please send a note to me at 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will provide that information. Turnaround time is normally about one week from receipt.
Thank you for asking - Dennis
I have one of those reels ,but it's missing the handle..
Is it better than 9 peerless?
Most folks prefer the #9. The 109 is a knuckle buster that does not have the anti-reverse feature. The #9 is a different design that has the more traditional penn reels setup with the A/R dog.
Amazing what little lube will do e en on a old reel like that one
thank you!
Thank you Brian - Please stay tuned. I am adding new reels all the time - Dennis
What is the little peg for on the new spool you put on?
Another way to secure the line to the reel besides only using an arbor knot.
is the handle supposed to turn when in free spool
It can turn when in free spool, but generally it does not turn unless you do it. If you find that the reel is turning in free spool when you are drop fishing and or casting, then something is tight inside the reel. It is usually drag washers that are not installed properly or a spool shaft out of round or a stuck bearing. Usually a tuneup can fix most of those issues, except for the bent spool shaft, where you would need to replace the spool. - Thanks for asking - Dennis
does the handle turn when it is in free spool
Yes - the 109 is the knuckle buster version of this reel. The handle turns backwards in free spool by design
Dennis

You also show why "Made in America" used to mean so much.
It's not just made in America, but I get your point. A lot of the Japanese reels and German, and French reels have suffered by moving the production off shore. Just look at an Ambassadeur made in Sweden versus on the BCX series made in China. There was a certain pride of manufacture that is missing these days. - Thanks - Dennis
