    Funny story about how I became a locksmith. Me and the wife split and I left our home and she changed the locks on me. I came to get some things and my key didn’t work. At the time I was a carpenter for a maintenance outfit. One day work was slow and I was sent out to help the locksmiths. The guy I worked with picked a lock and I was amazed. He gave me a lock pick set and told me how things work in the lock. I picked my first lock in about 5min. I went and got all my things from our home without kicking doors in, which is legal but I didn’t want the hassle of it making look bad in divorce court. In less than 6 months I was turned lose as a locksmith. Been doing it about 9yrs now and I love it.

    I'm just a lock sporter about a year in. Orange belt which means I can't yet open an American 1100, or Abus 72/40. I can open a LOT of locks with spools though. I do whole heartedly agree that the 3 most go to picks are the half diamond, the short hook, and... if you just want to get an open, a rake like a wave rake. I'd add the long hook too cause some bittings force you to reach under a pin stack.
    I DO love a locksmith that is accepting of locksporters. Some of us are borderline locksmiths. We may not be in the trade for whatever reason but we have acquired many of the skills like re-pinning.
    As for pick sets. He is right. You need different picks for North America and Europe. I did a search and bought the 2nd rank pick set (I disagree with that rank) . I got the Dangerfield Praxis set. It comes with 8 of the most useful picks in in both .023 and .015 thicknesses.
    Like he says. Locksmiths just want the open. Fast if possible. Sporters want to use SSP skills.

    So true what you said about field experience. Big big difference from sitting at a work bench with a lock in a bench vise, or your hands. Especially when it comes to Tensioning, which is the most important part of opening any lock. 2 minutes into this video and you have me very interested. I love common sense. It's easier to use a bump key but of course I put spool pins in my locks so I guess picking would be faster but tricky! I think if you drill out custom core pin chambers with slightly offset angles and put spool pins in there good luck trying to pick it because a stack will drop and plug the core before you can get them all to the shear line, !

    Buying picks is a sucker's deal for a noob unsure if they'll stick with locksmithing or locksport. You can make -- and I have made, several times -- picks and tension wrenches from leaf rake tines, engine dipsticks and other random steel. You can make any shape you want, and when you make a really good one, you pattern it to make it again down the road. You really only _need_ a Dremel (or knockoff; mine is from Crappy Tire), but it also helps to learn a bit about quenching and tempering steel.
    Oh, and pick sets are another scam. As with knife sets, there's usually a lot of crap you'll never use. Of course, if not for the crap, how could they justify charging $100 for literally twenty cents of steel? LOL

  • @johng.1703
    @johng.1703 Год назад

    as a professional, a good locksmith should have specific knowledge about brands and models of locks, and how they are vulnerable to bypass, picking shouldn't be the first go to, bypassing should be.
    but as he pointed out, locksmiths are for profit, so they will have profit in mind, more specifically how they can increase their profits, so spending time practicing everyday firstly costs profits, and secondly means you can't charge to remove and replace a drilled lock. so drill and replace is the preferred profit making practice.
    all picks bend and break, even really expensive really great brand picks break, it all depends on how much you are bullying a pin, bullying a pin means using way more pressure than normal, you are forcing the pin in to place with a lot of tension, which is good for cheap nasty locks, but against good, high spec locks? no a chance.
    rakes are good for two things, defeating cheap locks and getting a false set on a good lock, it saves a lot of time.
    the handles on a pick are important, really important, because you need to feel feedback from the lock.
    yes the bent bit of metal is a tension wrench, but more specifically they are bottom of the key way tension wrenches, you also have top of the keyway tension wrenches, which gives you a lot more room to manipulate a pick.
    with his rake and SPP what he means is rake to a false set and then SPP, but if you don't have a false set, there is no point going to SPP.

      @kimnilsson7501 4 года назад

      @Matthew Hopkins Maybe, maybe not. The times a rake open in the first try, just makes the customer angry and say their been over charged.
      Drilling just looks better, and the crap goes away.
      Raking or SPP, people dont understand all the hours spent before - UNPAID - and yet your comments stata that they overcharge....
      Raking is mostly pure luck, depending on the lock off course (do it again and you know -else it was pure luck). But SPP is way many times spent unpaid before learn - those are all the hours spent gaining back from the "overcharge".
      And we don't replace a crappy one with new crap - we update to new standards.
      And yes, I mostly drill (or destroy anything else), but an Swedish Assa is not what you normally use/have. Don't know why we shouldn't charge You.
      Didn't we do the job you asked for, getting in?
      You can always fix your car yourself and play doctor for severe surgery (ask your neigbour to drive the ambulance, though). 2 komp putty will do your teeth cheap, too - not overcharged from a dentist. Good luck.
      --- or these ppl have not spent a long time in the bench learning their stuff?
      Just for something looks easy, it isn't.

    whether she lost the key or it wouldn't work I'm not sure but they ended up calling a locksmith who drilled out to the hole causing damage to storage unit door and charging them for a new lock as well.

    Tension wrenches? Certainly not. Tension means pulling in a straight line. These are torsion wrenches because they are for turning.

    • @claudetesh1265

      Criminals would much rather break a window or kick the door in. It’s all about getting in and out as fast as possible. Curious minds are far less dangerous than the guy looking for the quick and easy buck. My hope for these types of videos is that the lock makers learn the faults with their products and produce higher security locks tho some like master lock are, like the criminals, more interested in the quick and easy buck. I haven’t found a master lock yet that isn’t a complete joke.

      @@claudetesh1265 Brand doesn't matter. It's capitalism, kid. A more expensive lock is more secure because richer people pay more to guard the money they stole from workers, whereas poor people are stuck with LSOs (lock-shaped objects) that are included when you buy or rent an average place.

    • @claudetesh1265

      Paesan Control Centre except the addition of simple security pins, to stay on topic kid, would maybe add a few cents to the cost of a lock. You clearly have no experience in lock manufacturing so please do some research next time you want to correct someone who knows what they are talking about. Furthermore push your conspiracy bs where it’s applicable. It has nothing to do with this topic.

      How come?
      Good picks don't hang in places like Walmart. They can't steel them, thus they don't use them.
      And they are not alowed to take the picks with them in prison, else there would be plenty of time for praticing.
