My name is Dennis Mohr I dont even fly but I watch you Mike all the time you are a very interesting person I always liked to watch you fly draco I probably spelled that wrong but im sure you know what I mean.I cant wait to see scrappy finished I will keep watching.
I wouldn't mind him dropping Scrappy if it was to build Draco 2.0. Just like the six million dollar man We can rebuild him We have the technology We have the capability to make the world's first bionic Draco Better than he was before Better Stronger Faster But cheaper
Drako was the greatest aircraft ever built in my opinion. It embodies everything I didn’t even know I wanted in an aircraft. I love watching your builds, and dream of someday trying some of the techniques myself. Can’t wait to see more of scrappy!
As a home builder, I am going back to watch all these early vids on Scrappy. It's even better the second time as the movie in Mike's head begins to play out more clearly in my head. Love Mike's one take approach like real life always is anyway.
I had a parrot named scrappy! That bird loved to pick fights. Hence the name. Loved to bite your hand for the reaction. My hands are mostly dead, feeling wise, So I didn't react. That's how I came to have him. You are still here. That is the important thing. Draco was amazing but only with you. You were Draco's heart. Peace. We look forward to seeing more of your videos.
The title had me fooled. Little did i know it was about testing the tail wheel. Yeah I'm sad we lost draco but just look at that rear swing arm and ogh scrappy is going to be a epic replacement
@RoHa Same here. In fact, *I predict that one day we will see both Draco and Scrappy flying again.* I remember watching him reconstruct Draco in so many ways, that I have no doubt Mike has the skills necessary to rebuild Draco. So the only question is will he. I'm sure there are insurance complications to deal with since his insurance company likely "Totaled" Draco, but I'm hoping any issues can eventually be worked out. The hangar certainly looks as if something is missing at the present time, and I think Mike can make room for a couple more airplanes and still have room to work.
You are so AR about the way you go about building ZERO obsolescence into your work and I love it! If I knew what you know and had the resources to do what you do, I would be exactly the same way. So watching your videos gives me an extension of myself I wouldn't otherwise be able to experience. Thanks for the great work!
Mike, my heart SANK, when I read the title of this video...I thought you meant you were giving up on “Scrappy”. I was worried Draco’s demise had somehow deflated your enthusiasm....But I watched and realized I was very wrong. I was very sad to see the end of Draco....But as I said in another comment, you loved Draco, but Draco loved you back in the way he let you down easy....Cheers Mike....Your videos are entertaining, educational, and convey a lush enthusiasm that is infectious....I am SO looking forward to all of your videos documenting “Scrappy’s” progress. Hi Mike. Thanks for another great video. Your building skills and ideas are inspirational. I’m sorry about Draco but it is only thing and the important part is that you and your passengers we’re not hurt. Please don’t take it to heart if people say they “would never” do what you did that led to your wreck. Monday morning quarterbacking is rarely helpful. Thanks for posting about it so we can all learn.
Hello Mike. I just want to thoroughly thank you for this video. I have little knowledge of aviation but have been following your videos religiously since the beginning of the Draco build. I use your channel as a form of motivation in my life. It is truly inspiring to watch you handle the loss with such humility and grace, it only reaffirms my belief that this channel is about far more than a love for planes. It's about a love for life and exploring its adventures with passion above all else. Thanks again and I wish you best of luck with your scrappy therapy project.
I agree 100%. I dream of building a plane, but I'm blind as a bat, suffer from motion sickness, and have no technical skills whatsoever. I shouldn't fly let alone build a plane. So I live vicariously through him. I'm just glad he's ok after the crash. He isn't done building things yet. He makes stuff every man with a pulse can't help but love, I think of him as the Hennessy of bush planes. Back to work Buddy! I wanna see you fly Scrappy.
Mike I was so glad to see you again doing what you do so well engineering and building aircraft. Even more importantly seeing you in good spirits as you were before the crash. I look forward to your explanation of what went wrong, but please take your time don't rush it. You will know when the time is right. My crash took place in Cambodia with loss of life and it took 40 + years to finally have a funeral in my own mind to put to rest the actions I took and to put it to rest. God bless you my friend, you are an inspiration to us all.
When I saw the title, I too was scared you were dropping the project after Draco!! So relieved to see you instead, dropped scrappy on some awesome tail gear setup!! Way to go Mike!
I am so excited to see you continuing to build and post your video. I was so happy no one was hurt in the crash but sadden at the lost of Draco. Take care and God bless.
Getting right back to work on aircraft is the best therapy. Looking forward to meeting you one day Mike. From one fabricator to another, good work brother, keep it up.
Being multi millionaire successful help a lot. I'm sure he worked for it, but not everyone even gets the opportunity to work for millions and the success to have the world as a toy box.
"not everyone even gets the opportunity to work for millions" sounds like sour grapes from someone who just didn't work for millions. Try twin MP's ruclips.net/video/BNkJCEtaYDQ/видео.html and think again :)
It helps to be wealthy, but I know plenty of people making low-to-median income that enjoy their hobbies just as much as Mike does. I don't make any more than $60k a year and I'm building a race car in my driveway in my spare time. It'll take me longer to do it because of monetary constraints than it would Mike if he were to build the same project, but I enjoy it none-the-less.
I’d have the same attitude if I wasn’t constantly worried about if I will be able to pay the electricity bill, if I didn’t worry about how much we can spend on groceries for my pregnant wife and toddler, wasn’t worrying about the car payment... Etc. etc.
Mike you still are the greatest living aviator! In the same vein as Howard Hughes pre 1950. You do so much for aviation and freely share your victories and defeats. Much love and God bless!
Hard to find a more honest and adventurous man. Especially in the engineering field! Add aviation to the mix and there are few, if any competitors. Thanks Mike! Inspirational work, flying and videos!
I think you got everyone's attention with the title. Scarred us all. I am an A&P Mechanic and Instructor. Your videos are awesome to watch and entertaining. The pivot point you made for the tail wheel is genius. I could learn a lot from you. Looking forward to the rest of the videos of the Scrappy build. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
Thanks for being so truthful about your / everyone’s decision making process and our possibility for making wrong decisions. Decisions that we wouldn’t “normally” make. I call it “getting inside the tube”. Sometimes/every time a pause/thought maybe required. Thank you .
Glad to see you back in the saddle. Is brave to be responsible but don’t so hard on yourself. Your enthusiasm and dedication to your projects is the fuel of this channel. Back to work 💪!
Knew title was clickbait... like you said... therapy! @ 18:43 "old school" then uses a very modern hand held rechargeable bandsaw... big grin here. Keep doing what you do... WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! I got to see Draco fly several times, so we all know it was a great machine, and SCRAPPY will be epic! Thanks Mike!
Wish I could always be as energetic as Mike seems to be. I learn a lot from you and you are such an inspiration, especially to our young generation. Thanks Mike.
I've heard it said, "Oh yeah, give me his kind of money and I ...yadda, yadda...". Instead, what I see is a tremendous level of knowledge and the means to make it happen. I do enjoy watching you work, Mike. Well done, and keep it up.
Hey Mike, we are all human, as the most precious thing is everyone is safe and sound, as machines can be replaced, as seen this doing recovery in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧, so you are one of the very best designers I have ever seen, so use your passion to build the best that you know you do and make effortlessly brilliant 👍
I'm so happy to hear that you and your wife and friend are ok! God was with you.. I lost my dad in 1969 from a plane crash. But I still love aviation. He was a Bush pilot in Alaska. Anytime I can get up in a plane I never refuse.. God bless..
Working in a marine environment, and also being relatively new to the more technical side of aero-engineering, the whole prop 'cavitation' thing made a ton of sense, or at least it helped me understand prop stall a bit more anyway since it's something I have visualised previously. Keep up the good work \m/
Ok, didn't know this was possible, but I like Mike even more now... He has outfitted this shop from Harbor Freight Tools! Lol I recognized the sandblaster box, and then I couldn't stop seeing Harbor Freight after that. I also have a mix of Hft and name brands, depending on my needs, and whether Hft has a comparable quality, and now I changed jobs and deliver to Hft stores, so I get to see all their new stuff. Good on you for recognizing value despite the hate they get!
I’m kinda at a loss for words. So excited to see you back. With your knowledge and talent for creating almost anything I’m surprised you keep saying Draco is gone. I hope that not to be true. It was truly a beautiful work of art, and she deserves to fly another day.
im a poor man i couldnt offord too fly ...ive always would love too admired ole war planes n bushplanes ....i came across the "draco" vid had no idea you had crashed it til a few vids later i was totally speechless my heart sank i felt purdy bad about that plane and i didnt own it ...i think i acually had water in my eyes lol truly that was the most incredible plane i have ever seen in my life !!! i so wished that plane could come to life again that plane set you light years apart from any other plane in the world !!! i will be watching every plane vid you put out hoping one day the great draco" comes back to life !!!! thank you from canada 🇨🇦
My favorite part of this video is the Harbor Freight power tools. Just goes to show you that you don’t have to have a ton of money to fabricate, you just have to get out there and do it. “Back to work!” Thanks for the inspiration Mr Patey!
You scared me with that title, almost gave me a heart attack, that definitely was not clickbait you seriously dropped Scrappy! It's going to be the craziest aircraft to have ever STOL'd. That tail wheel assembly is just brilliant, look forward to seeing the mains built and dropped! I truly missed your content Mike, hope you're able to post more often? It's fantastic to see your spirit didn't even get a dent in it. RUclips is lucky to have you! God Bless Brother Rob
Mike You are very talented and were learning all that Draco could do. Make a professional report and analyze the incident and give yourself a break and quit rubbing your nose in it. I learned so much watching you build that plane and I wish you could in some capacity put that type of Wilga plane into production. Keep up the excellent work and keep these videos coming.
Loved this one Mike. You are a true Aircraft Builder. How do I know from watching this video and not all of the others? "Get a BIGGER HAMMER!" I have fixed many aircraft issues with that one simple tool. Keep up the great videos, and "Get To Work."
It's heart warming to see your genuine love and passion for the Scrappy project. Great therapy especially after loosing Draco. I know that you probably can't say at this point, but deep down, is Draco salvageable?
Guessing your wife provided the psychological support throughout the grieving process for Draco? By now she must be ready to defend her doctorate. Seriously. We all can't thank her enough.
@@sashawaxman807 Too far gone? I've watched this man with this enthusiasm for all things flight capable build many number of incredible machines nearly from scratch. I will hold out hope for Draco to rise from the ashes.
Considering it did a sort of side roll, i'm thinking the frame must've suffered a lot of torsional damage. At that point...it's scrap. It's not like a front impact or a snapped wing or something localized. It's all over. It would be irresponsible and dangerous to try to fix something like that. That being said, if he really wants another Draco, theoretically speaking, all he has to do is get another air frame, and "import" all the parts that can be salvaged. That being said x2, personally, i would go on to another project.
Mike! I cannot imagine what the draco incident had an impact on you. It was hard for me. And so glad you and your wife and friend are safe and sound! I love you’re dedication to scrappy. I am beyond excited to see what you are bringing to the world of aviation! Keep building and “back to work” for me and you! Rock on dude!
It's so cool to see what people with a lot of money do for fun. Instead of hot cars and women, this fellow does aeroplanes as his hobby. Such a meaningful life it gives me goosebumps; it really does.
I am currently working on getting an aerospace engineering degree. Your enthusiasm and drive is so inspiring, and your videos help remind me why I love the aerospace field so much. Thank you!
Welcome back Mike. Stalling or cavitating is a detail better left to the classroom. You know what the difference is...none. Nice HF belt sander, looks like the one in my shop. LOL Happy to see you smiling and back at it. Looking forward to the flying model. Thanks for sharing
They are actually different phenomenon. Cavitation is caused by water pressure being too low and transforming to steam. This damages the prop. Stalling happens when the airflow separates from the airfoil and becomes turbulent.
Mike, I thoroughly enjoy your positive attitude and your ingenuity for building and designing your airplanes. I watched you excitingly build Draco and couldn't wait for it to be finished myself. When I saw the video from the crash it saddened me but I was happy that you weren't hurt badly. Mike, watching your videos has helped me to become motivated and excited to create dreams in my life where like you Mike....the sky's the limit! Thank you!
Mr Patey. I love your attitude about piloting and mistakes. I was a professional pilot for 40 years and appreciate your approach. It is refreshing. Maybe we can all learn something. Just glad you are OK.
Mike! You have inspired me an aviation enthusiast and veteran firefighter 20+ yrs! I enjoy watching your builds! I'm asking that you not to give up on draco! Please sir! Can't wait for scrappy!
I wadded my Maule up because of a momentary lapse of judgment. It happens because we are human and while we try our best not too. I'm not one who is quick to judge, but one of the locals at the airport coffee shop brought my accident up for months. Oddly enough he made the same mistake as I did and didn't catch it in time and was killed.
Hey Mike, in light of your design choices with Scappy’s tail wheel. I think you may get a kick out of the A2D1 Skyshark. I recommend you take a look at it. Great work so far!
I also wanted to mention, because of you and Trent, and Corey, Kevin.... etc I have begun my flight training! My end goal is to be a CFI. Your attitude and enthusiasm fuels my flying fuel tank! I hope I can be as wise a pilot as you guys are!!! 👍
Dear Mike, you took responsibility for the accident, so, please don't be so hard on yourself. You are like a brother to me and many others. We love you and are very proud of you. You lost a big piece of your heart and we are grieving with you. I can only imagine how difficult it is for you. We heal in time, and it takes time. I'm glad you have Scrappy to work on. Talk to us about lessons learned. Best wishes to you and your family. Mike B
Mike... Mad respect for taking full responsibility for Draco. Most people would at least throw in a caveat - "Yeah, but... this happened." Thanks for being real.... and honest. You da man!
I'm surprised you don't have your own machine shop. I sure like your attitude and willingness to discuss your mistakes and thinking process toward your builds. I'm impressed with your skill in dealing with compound curves. While building my Baby Belle, I encountered compound curves in the aluminum. By the time I was through, I had people coming from miles around to hear me cuss for 15 minutes without repeating myself. I'll have to repeat. I like your attitude.
R.I.P Draco B U T ............. I would much rather lose Draco than to instead lose Mike Patey, sorry you lost your baby, in that respect YOU are our Draco, glad you, your wife and friend walked away and you owned your mistake, you sir are a legend !, I cannot wait to see Scrappy Fly, it's going to be awesome, take care Mike, so so glad you, your wife and friend were unscathed, such a blessing, Rest well Draco.
Im thinking of starting a kickstarter to buy a Wilga 2000 to drop at his door. I would hate to have mike flying a carbon cub. Albeit a very modified carbon cub.
Mike look up a product made by Holley called "Hydramat". It goes on the end of your fuel pick up point. It was designed to be able to pull fuel from where it has moved away due to centrifugal force, from the pick back into the pick up without adding any air to the mix. Very interesting and impressive product.
@@Heyemeyohsts I'm actually pretty happy with my life ay. I'm lucky enough to have learnt how to fly and do so professionally. You’re a survivor. Can’t believe you’re right back at it. If there is a positive to losing Draco, you have more hanger space to work on scrappy. Good luck...eager to see what will come out of your head.
Well you couldn't put, Rest in Peace, cause I don't think his corpse could take all that lying around. Sorry Mike, sounds a little morbid, but it's probably true.
Getting into the area of stupid. What a way with words. My late dad would have loved your building videos. He was wan aviation fanatic from childhood literally until his grave, taking his last flight the weekend before going to hospice.
Just my thought Mike, that 3/8" bolt with a 1/8" hole in it doesn't seem very strong to hold that tail wheel. Well, I guess you just proved me wrong, carry on.
I love your energy! I need to have that wear off on me! Thx, man! Love all of it! Excited about all of your builds! Kudos for the shout out to your wife! A lot of men wouldn’t do that. I think it shows why you’re successful and you know you’re blessed. Keep up the great work! I pray for your continued enthusiasm and success! 🙏🏻 It’ll make me more successful. Maybe I’m selfish

im a poor man i couldnt offord too fly ...ive always would love too admired ole war planes n bushplanes ....i came across the "draco" vid had no idea you had crashed it til a few vids later i was totally speechless my heart sank i felt purdy bad about that plane and i didnt own it ...i think i acually had water in my eyes lol truly that was the most incredible plane i have ever seen in my life !!! i so wished that plane could come to life again that plane set you light years apart from any other plane in the world !!! i will be watching every plane vid you put out hoping one day the great draco" comes back to life !!!! thank you from canada 🇨🇦
My favorite part of this video is the Harbor Freight power tools. Just goes to show you that you don’t have to have a ton of money to fabricate, you just have to get out there and do it. “Back to work!” Thanks for the inspiration Mr Patey!
"Old school"
Reaches for a power hacksaw.
That made me chuckle.
Love your work.
I love your enthusiasm and humility, both in your build videos and when you discuss your mistakes. Thank you!
God Bless Brother
Rob
Mike, your enthusiasm motivates me. I am a somewhat jaded professional corporate pilot and your love of aviation sparks me up!
His wife said on Instagram that Draco was too far gone
@@sashawaxman807 Too far gone? I've watched this man with this enthusiasm for all things flight capable build many number of incredible machines nearly from scratch. I will hold out hope for Draco to rise from the ashes.
Alot of parts and avionics could be salvaged for scrappy
Considering it did a sort of side roll, i'm thinking the frame must've suffered a lot of torsional damage. At that point...it's scrap. It's not like a front impact or a snapped wing or something localized. It's all over. It would be irresponsible and dangerous to try to fix something like that.
That being said, if he really wants another Draco, theoretically speaking, all he has to do is get another air frame, and "import" all the parts that can be salvaged.
That being said x2, personally, i would go on to another project.
It’s fun watching how exciting you get. You truly love your hobby. Thank you for sharing it with us. GW
LOL, I thought the same thing, but I am glad he is back with his smile, and enthusiasm
Great to hear again my best phrase ever: "Back to work"
Make T- shirts with your slogan btw 😁😁😁
Yes please!
Got to throw the fist pump in there to.
Mike inspires me to work harder everyday. "Back to work 👊"
flyingcowboys.com/products/mike-pateys-back-to-work
Yes! That phrase has been a huge motivator for me!
Same here, old phrase states :if you want it right , do it yourself :)
Excellent!! good to see you're back. Back to work, Never Felt So Good!!👍Thank you for sharing
I used to build medieval armor by hand, I appreciate that tailwheel piece!
It's so cool to see what people with a lot of money do for fun. Instead of hot cars and women, this fellow does aeroplanes as his hobby. Such a meaningful life it gives me goosebumps; it really does.
The rear is impressive suspension, can't wait to see the front, best wishes.
If you ever wanted to land your bushplane like a WW2 carrier fighter, THIS is how you do it! Excellent ingenuity and craftsmanship, Mike, as always...
I am reminded of the tail wheel/ tail hook assembly of a F4U Corsair.
James wingert now that you mention that imagine a Stol competition on an aircraft carrier!
I am currently working on getting an aerospace engineering degree. Your enthusiasm and drive is so inspiring, and your videos help remind me why I love the aerospace field so much. Thank you!
Thank you and best wishes in your endeavor!! 👍🏻
You really are an inspiration! 👍
So great to see you back Mike.....been worried about you. JDM
Welcome back Mike.
Stalling or cavitating is a detail better left to the classroom. You know what the difference is...none.
Nice HF belt sander, looks like the one in my shop. LOL
Happy to see you smiling and back at it. Looking forward to the flying model.
Thanks for sharing
They are actually different phenomenon. Cavitation is caused by water pressure being too low and transforming to steam. This damages the prop. Stalling happens when the airflow separates from the airfoil and becomes turbulent.
@@Jebarus13 They both have the same effect, loss of traction in the medium they operate in. Same but different.
Inspire, I hope you never tire... And the world needs your example of what Courage really means. Thanks for being back with us.
Genius at work. " Just go with it."
Thank you!
"Back to work!" I love this guy!!
Mr Patey. I love your attitude about piloting and mistakes. I was a professional pilot for 40 years and appreciate your approach. It is refreshing. Maybe we can all learn something. Just glad you are OK.
Why I love Mike: "I'm now getting in the area of just plain stupid" - 34:38
"just plane stupid" FTFY
Mike! You have inspired me an aviation enthusiast and veteran firefighter 20+ yrs!
I enjoy watching your builds!
I'm asking that you not to give up on draco! Please sir!
Can't wait for scrappy!
Spend a lot of time around aircraft and seeing an experienced pilot make a silly mistake is inevitable.
Thanks for the Scrappy update.
GREAT video Mike. You are a special person and we ALL look forward to the future videos. Thanks
All it needs is a couple of small thrust vectoring turbines for near vertical takeoff and landing capability
And maybe a 30 mm cannon. Introducing the Patey A-10 Scrappy !
Rocket assisted takeoff...and landing.
Get Mike to design and build the F-35 and it'll be built from scrap, cost less, and perform better.
Mike B
Mike is like the Jay Leno of aviation. Blue shirt and jeans!!
Except Mike has a level of competence and humility that's way past Jay.
Mike please..!!?? Rebuild DRACO..!! I wanna see him flying in the sky again..!!! Blessings...
@@eduardomoran7757 He'll let you help. You can lead the project.
"Jay" (prolly an aerophobe) is incapable of tying the laces of the Patey family, but I get the reference, bro.
Are you going to rebuild DRACO?
Mike... Mad respect for taking full responsibility for Draco. Most people would at least throw in a caveat - "Yeah, but... this happened." Thanks for being real.... and honest. You da man!
Mike Patey “back to work”. Andrew Camarata “right, let’s get onto the next job...” amazing people!
I like Andrew's videos, too!
I read the title and almost passed out.
Why am I so invested in this? 😂😅
Because you need a life ?
@@Heyemeyohsts I'm actually pretty happy with my life ay. I'm lucky enough to have learnt how to fly and do so professionally. I have experienced acts of nature most people will only ever see in screens. I have developed a great love for engineering and the sciences, which has led me to become invested and interested in individuals like Mike. I very much enjoy living the life you naively think I need.
@@Heyemeyohsts You know how you always think of the best response after you've walked away from an argument? Yea... 😂
Over and above the fact that I should've been smarter about it, I should've known you were tolling. Rough day but I swear I'm smart.
Mike you are such a high energy guy. I don't know how you have all the time to play. Love the shows and quality of the shows. Keep it up!
Sad to see Draco wrecked, horrified at the major injury your wife had! Broken nails are something to cry about!
I did, I did have a lot of fun watching your show. I always have and suspect always will.! Thank you very much Mike for being you.!
really missed you. welcome back🍀
You’re a survivor. Can’t believe you’re right back at it. If there is a positive to losing Draco, you have more hanger space to work on scrappy. Good luck...eager to see what will come out of your head.
Don't you just love how people correct you on the ol' interweb?! Lol
Glad to see you back to work on Scrappy. Your enthusiasm for building things has motivated me to get back to work on my aircraft restoration.
On Mike Pateys headstone, "LETS GET BACK TO WORK"
Lol I dont see any other option. It's always back to work
It'll have to have the clinched fist also
@@bigunone Yip, that too.no doubt.
A headstone with that on it next to a hole...
Takes a big man to talk about mistakes Mike...can't change the past...let's get another plane going!
Oh man, glad to see an update on you man. I hope you get all the love and care you need to get through this emotionally. Very happy to see a new build video. Love your passion, energi, detailed explanations. Thanks champ.
I AM HERE FIXING AND FINETUNING MY MOUNTAIN BIKE AND THIS GUY IS FINE TUNING HIS NEW AIRPLANE... :D
GLR......Get back to WORK....
