Resident evil: US Air Force's most-feared squadrons

- Forces News has been given special access to the US Air Force squadrons giving American and allied pilots "the hardest challenge they'll probably ever face".
64th and 65th Aggressor Squadron, based at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, are the US Air Force's 'enemy' squadrons.
Their mantra is 'learn, teach, replicate' and they provide realistic air threats for training pilots by acting like adversaries.

When I was on active duty and stationed at Nellis AFB flying the F-16 Viper (1981 - 1985) we would fly against the aggressor sqs. At that time the aggressors were flying F-5s - it was some of the best air-to-air training I ever had in my 26 yrs of flying fighters for the USAF!
So how did the Viper do against the 14, 15, or 18 in a2a?
@@Carlos27thFS We did very well - not just bravado but fact - at Nellis we had a number of opportunities to do DACT - Dissimilar Air Combat Tactics - our Sq., the 429 TFS, also worked it out with Red Flag that if they needed RED Air we would be happy to fill that role. I can recall a number of missions with the Eagle and one or two with the 14 but really don't have any memory of the 18. The Viper, if flown right was a very dangerous adversary - you really needed to pay attention to radar missiles - or else you would get shot in the lips - but we worked out some very clever tactics to allow us to get close and if we got to the merge without getting hit, then we ate them like a grape! ONE BIG DANGER - the Viper could very easily kill you with GLOC - and I am sad to say we lost several very good pilots and friends that way - my God rest their souls.
@@carlparlatore294 Thanks for the reply. Thanks for your service. And RIP to those pilots.
Did you know Col Femrite 1981 Aggressor at Nellis?
@@feminator100 Sorry but the name is not familiar - but then again I could have but have killed too many brain cells in the last 40+ years 🙂
"it's like a vacuum cleaner"
"it is a vacuum." 😂😂
This is taking something like "Top gun" to another level..
Multiple countries involved and having actual adversaries equipment..
Either way, as I type this I can hear the rumbles of jets taking off and flying above my house heading out to the desert. It makes me proud to live where I do.. (live in N. Utah)
Too bad that we will never see fighter jet dogfights again eh!
Is this a useless exercise or what? Joyrides for Fly boys!
@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp Never say never!
@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp Dogfights are rare, but Ukraine and Russia had a few dogfights above Kyiv and Donbass last year. Now with the ground saturated with AA-capabilites, it has died down again. Russian fire their weapons from Russian airspace, and whatever the Ukrainians can muster fly at tree-top altitude.
@@Hazzelnot94 both sides really should settle down with their Manpads and let the flyboys duke it out in the sky
@@guts-141 I mean in my opinion, the should stop the ground war all together, and just go at it in the air.
2:10 Dang I thought that was Lil Nas X helping the pilots 😂
The Brits and Americans train so much together that of course they're both going to be very good and they always seem to have the highest amount of respect for each other in all branches, not just air force
Don’t forget the Aussie’s
The RAF and the large USAF 48th FW share the same training areas daily in the UK so they will each be very familiar with each others tactics. Both also hire in private aggressor aircraft to train with in the UK to mix it up a bit.
Bless, the uk air force wouldn’t be able to sustain a conflict on his own for more than a week, mainly due to its too low capacity and power potential. It is similar for the uk police couldn’t even implement the appaling restrictions during Covid, due to lack of staff and équipments, . Hence why they need usa behind.. welll, what’s News since 1917…
cool factor of the aggressor squadrons is through the roof
Was one of the original crew chiefs when the Agressors were at Nellis and we had T38’s painted in Russian camouflage early 70’s 👍❤️🇺🇸🥃
You mean Mig 28s, right?
no the t38 goshawk its a us training aircraft - they use it for scenarios - that sounds neat af man cool to hear
Thank you for service to the free world Mr. Conder.
@@AlpineVulcan T38Talon
Used to go tdy from george afb to Nellis for red flags and green flags in the early 80s. You guys had the most awesome paint job on your F-5s
Great to know this professional work is going on. Great commentary as well. Thanks, I love this stuff.
Vatniks on the comments are somehow trying to link this video to baloon shootdown.
Let them cope. Their fighter pilots are only good for crashing straight into the ground.
I wonder what they’re thinking like, it seems funny
Any idea what's up with the commie insignia?
@@UnderVaroshI’m assuming the group was assembled to counter the looming threat of communist countries and their interceptors. As well as the whole “think like the enemy” thing. So to the reason they have them now is simpler to the reason why their planes are flying in cams that are akin to the modern Russian planes. It’s most likely a combo of immersion and tradition

Russia still uses 1950's tech PESA radars on 99 percent of their aircraft, kinda hard to replicate how bad that is lol
Have to train for the worst to fight like the best. Remember the F-16 is the most popular fighter in the world, not too far fetched to imagine Americans having to face them in some future conflict (like how Iran still primarily uses American jets and helos)
One of the perks in some units playing OpFor roles is the slightly more lax uniform and grooming regulations. Had a buddy whose infantry battalion was pegged for aggressor role during an upcoming exercise. The CO allowed them all to grow their hair and beards out the month leading up to a 2 week exercise in the mountains and dress in civilian attire as they were portraying an insurgent force during the exercise.
I got a good laugh looking at the photos of guys wearing cowboy hats, flannel shirts, and jeans he showed me. They also had to portray local populace too as part of counter insurgency training and be hostile (but not violent) towards the unit being trained to portray an unhappy populace. Apparently they had a blast yelling insults at their brothers in arms from rooftops while chucking empty soda cans at walls to spook them.
My only experience is from cadets, but getting to be rioters and going ham on a shield wall was a lot of fun!
Being part of the shield wall... not so much fun. One of you goes down and the whole line usually does.
thats a disgrace.
That's awesome.
@@toddw6716 A bunch of little kids who never grew up! Still playing Cowboys and Indians!
@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp just men living and serving
I really like how humble he was when he was talking about the tactics what he was saying about the good guys, but he used the word adversarial for the other side instead of bad guys which I think is awesome
This is what makes the USA and NATO the best fighting force there is. They keep evolving.
Got buzzed so hard yesterday. 3 f16s came whipping through my valley, sneak pass style. First 2 got me looking up and the third came in low and fast. Love it.
Ever been buzzed by a F-35? They are rather loud. Was out on the harbour on our little boat on Australia Day and a couple jets were doing an air show. Got buzzed a couple times (as I of course headed to the centre of the harbour for the best view). Was crazy seeing F-35's flying past the Sydney skyline like something from a movie.
Journalist- It's like a vacuum cleaner! Pilot- it is a vacuum cleaner 😂
😂
A huge thank you to the Aggressor Squadron and all NATO’s pilots for helping to keep our world free.🇬🇧🇺🇸🍺👍
Enough is enough. Now they must fight Russian air force over Ukraine. But I know this will never ever happen.
Free to dominate over all others not on your side.

I was a 64th AMU Aggressor crew chief on F5E's at Nellis AFB, 1980 - 1983. For awhile my A/C was the Squadron plane # 57.
Was part of first two Maple Flags at Cold Lake. Best damn assignment out of my 8.5 years service. Wearing the AMU ink on my shoulder.
Yup. I did my Cold lake TDY when the 474th EMS was alive.
Helped support the Red Tigers of the 430.
Seriously great times!
Our RAF were at a huge disadvantage with the Tornado F3 in BFM / DACT during exercises like Red Flag. The Typhoon has done wonders for firstly a better weapons platform with adaptable electronic integration etc, but being able to mix it up with F-15, F-16 , F-18 , Rafale, Gripen and even F-22 during so called "friendly" training 😉 & come out with a respectable reputation
sorry dude - 5th gen killed ALL 4th gens at a rate of 12:1 during Red Flag
@@JamesJoyce12 The F22 is superb but both Rafale & Typhoons have nailed them a fair few times, mostly in favor of the F-22 in engagements but the Rafale & Typhoon are capable of head busting , high G , high energy BFM , and it wasnt all Glory Burgers for US pilots, sometimes it was Crepe Suzette, Wiener Schnitzel & Fish & Chips 😉
@@jockstrapp21 also, you can probably operate 5 of those for one f-22. always keep costs in mind. why i think 1 vs 1 comparison to chinese military is pointless.
@@JamesJoyce12 While I do agree the difference between 5th gen and 4th gen is rather large. And as a American infantry vet it pains me to admit. *No military platform is flawless.* You should NEVER assume victory.
@@JamesJoyce12 This isn't true? The f22s largely lose all of their stealth capabilities when bays are opening, munitions firing etc and the RAF typhoon is equipped with superior heat seeking/thermal technology in close to medium ranges. The f22 is designed to destroy aircraft from a distance whilst maintaining a minimal radar presence etc, whilst the typhoon is designed (whilst being a jack of all trades) first and foremost for dogfights. At close range, the typhoon wipes the f-22, with superior turning capabilities, sustained flight at high G's, far more capable when it comes to high altitude operations as well as a higher maximum altitude. Two aircraft designed for somewhat interchangeable but different roles, and both aircraft could destroy the other in its specialisation. The f-22 would realistically have a 30-40 second lead on the typhoon before the roles were most likely reversed and the raptor has a typhoon up it's tail. Edit: typo
almost getting gunned in a large exercise like this proves how important teaching advanced bfm and acm still is. people say there wont ever be a within visual range fight ever again...yeah right
nothing has ever looked so fun and serious at the same time XD
I love this reporter! Great reporting and sense of humour!
wow! Awesome behind the scenes
This is the most hands on funnest training I've ever seen 👍
That’s the most badass way to get to the flight line
The interviewer has a humorous sense of talking.
This is why NATO training is the best in the world.
I worked 16s at Nellis from 03-08. Fun times.
Preparing our fighters by simulating enemy configurations is a great idea.
Stay safe everybody at Red Flag!
Always!
These videos should be longer! So well done! But there's so much that the average Joe wants to know!
This sort of routine but it feels like we are already at war. God bless the lads

Amazing the amount of gear these guys have to have on their bodies.
@0:27 One day after our agressor flag was taken we stole the sister squadrons model off their property wrapped it in self stick plastic cooking wrap and painted it the same color as our Agressor Flagship and put it back. Their OIC saw it and flipped.
Are u talking ab tomahawks? If so I’m about to kidnap you’re snake

Mighty wings and lame wheels. What a combination! Brilliant vid! 😁

I'll sleep better tonight. Professionals at work paying the price for Freedom. Thanks Fellas.
And they all wear breitling watches. Nice!
I was at red flag in 2020, part of the egress team for F-15s. great time.
So, you know its the F-16, right? It's got this one big engine, but it's not like that to save fuel or anything. Usually, you'd have two engines in case one goes kaput. But the F-16? It's crazy fast and super agile, making it the top dog in the American fighter jet lineup. It's built to shine in those high-speed dogfights.
Now, when you're up there flying, your main worries are SAMs (Surface-to-Air Missiles) and AARAMs (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles). If one of these bad boys is coming at you, you've gotta do this thing called "janking." You dive down real fast, use some countermeasures, and hope the Earth's curve messes with the radar, keeping you hidden.
But if that doesn't work, you go Plan B: fly sideways to the missile and try to out-turn it as it gets closer. While you're doing that fancy flying, you also use countermeasures to confuse the missile's tracking system. If the missile loses track of you for too long, it'll just self-destruct. Pretty wild, huh?
Do it dude! What a man 👍👍👍 really bravo 👍👍👍
