I think one thing to consider for Joy are the dresses the stylist puts her in. The stylist puts her in extremely short and tight dresses and they seem very uncomfortable and hard to move in.
Absolutely. Joy is consistently given tight short dresses (in non-stretch fabrics) that restrict her movements when dancing. You can see the difference when she's given shorts or pants (or dresses with side slits/stretch fabric). Another factor too is the selective fancams frequently used for Joy. Joy was actually ill during Power Up era and the example of her "freestyle" was her being asked to remember a dance she did back in 2014. Joy's a better dancer than she's given credit for.
i think one of the major things when it comes to yeri's dancing is confidence, she was criticised so heavily from debut and went through a lot 2017-18 and i think it really affected her confidence and consequently her stage presence

Agreed she has gotten a lot of hate and she was pretty young when she joined them. I think it is hard to deal with that level of hate. She has talked about in the past how she gets anxious/nervous. I feel in a fair number of ways Yeri has done some of the most growing overall in the last few years.
Wendy improved her dancing skill. My opinion ranking: 1.irene and seulgi. Because there both the same. 1.because = irene flexible 2.because = seulgi master / god dancer. 2.wendy. Because she improved alot in 2018 - 2019 3.yeri. 4.joy. Because 2 of them is so similar. Because = yeri good at canging concept and under dance. 2.because = joy under dance. Can we also mention that Joy is several inches taller than every member in her group. That makes it significantly harder to match the movements of the members who have shorter limbs and are more matched in proportions to her. Its harder for her naturally, regardless of skill. I also don't think she is given the best outfits to dance in, which dont help
i totally agree with you. if you've seen joy's mr mr performance with her 96' friends hayoung and yerin, you could see joy is so used to matching her members' heights in rv choreos that in the special performance, she looked much shorter when dancing with her same-height/taller friends. i dont know how to explain this since im not a dancer but point is, joy definitely dances in a way that hides her height different with the rest of the rv members.

FINALLY someone out here appreciating Wendy's dance skills and particularly her amazing stage presence, I love that clip of her freestyle as I've seen it before but I don't think many people have - she's amazing!~
As a dancer for over 19 years, I'll just give my own opinion. Seulgi is my favorite dancer and she actually helped teach Joy to dance as a trainee. Joy is also one of the most consistently in sync with Seulgi which is a massive pro and indicative of dance ability and co-ordination of rhythm, something that wasn't mentioned in the video. I actually would say Joy has a natural ability and sense of rhythm, but with the shortest trainee period she was less developed at debut. She’s definitely improved a lot since then, which has been demonstrated by her recent Psycho performance on Handsome Tigers (wearing comfortable pants) and with her Tango solo dance. Joy is usually given tight short dresses to dance in, but when she gets to dance in appropriate outfits she can really show her fluidity and clean dance lines (see also Sunny Side Up! and Bing Bing fancams). Joy’s biggest weakness is her stamina, and knowing that she has underlying health issues it’s clearer to see why she sometimes doesn’t hit moves as hard, but it should be stated that this is separate to actual dance ability. Also with her taller height, she is more careful to match the other members, something she actually does consistently well making her movements more refined. Joy's actually only 167cm, her height doesn't affect her ability as a dancer in general, it simply means that in the group she has to alter her movements to ensure she matches the formation (which she does). After watching things like Joy dancing in the streets of San Francisco and her flamenco performance in Seville, it's obvious that Joy can freestyle and that she does indeed have a natural sense of rhythm. I think Joy’s a better dancer than she’s given credit for and her fancams are always some of my favorite to watch (Joy's Zimzalabim Facecam remains the most viewed Female Idol Facecam on SBS's RUclips channel). I'd also recommend people watch the group Sunny Side Up fancam from Inkigayo which especially shows Joy's dancing ability. The Power Up fancam used for Joy in this video is from 2018 and was from a period of time we now know Joy was suffering from health issues and I don't think the style of Power Up choreo is at all reflective of her full abilities. I'd personally have compared all the members using the same set of fancams eg: either Zimzalabim or Umpah Umpah era fancams. I also think it's important to clarify that Joy wasn't "heavily criticized" at all during Power Up, it was a singular comment from a forum. Joy's actually been consistently praised for her stage presence and dancing over many years by Korean fans, it's really never been an issue for her. Anyway I think Red Velvet are such an amazing group, all with their own strengths, and I hope all the members will be reunited soon on stage.
@fharla dongcoy Yes I remember on Idol Room the members were asked to dance to Havana and Joy and Seulgi really went for it (also previously Joy and Seulgi had a viral video of them dancing together to Havana which was great). Even just from seeing Joy dancing in the streets of San Francisco, it's very clear to me that she has an excellent sense of rhythm and really feels the beat of the music (which is why she's so in sync) and that's something as a dancer I view as very important.
Also wondering why OP thinks long limbs is a disadvantage to dancers lmao. Being too tall is a disadvantage (center of mass, energy expended etc) but long limbs make for beautiful lines. Idk what kind of dance background OP has not to care for lines.

I was rewatching the Sunny Side Up group fancam from Inkigayo and was again impressed by Joy as a dancer. None of her movements are awkward, she's perfectly in rhythm with the music, she's in sync with the group formation, her dance lines are graceful and importantly they flow from each step. That's why she suits certain types of choreo so well.
I almost completely agree with your ranking. I'm so glad Wendy is appreciated because she's actually one of the best dancers in rv. I would switch yeri and joy tho (Joy is more energetic and has better facial expressions on stage), but that's just my opinion :) Great Video!

As of 2020, Irene and Seulgi have debuted as a subunit and let me tell you, Irene's facials and stage presence have skyrocketed. She seems much more confident, and her newer performances of Psycho, Monster and Naughty? STUNNING.
I’m so proud of Wendy!!!!! She is my favorite member and I always thought that she was a good dancer but I’ve seen so many dance rankings over Twice, BP, and RV and she was always last in every ranking... so since I have no experience in dancing so I don’t know what’s good dancing and what’s not good dancing.
I completely agree with your ranking. I think Wendy's dancing is really underrated. The only thing I would change: I'd put Joy 4th and Yeri 5th. Despite being in the same level as technique, I think that Joy overall has a better aura (except for that no stage presence phase in 2018) and I think that the basics of dancing are also quite useful and important. I'm also an ex-dancer myself (10 years) but you probably have more experience than me and probably even started dancing before me, so I completely respect your opinion. Edit: I watched more fancams and I don't know who to put 5th and who 4th. Yeri has sharper movements and put much details in her dancing, and her stage presence has improved, but she sometimes under-dances. Joy, on the other side, I think has better stage presence, and she also pays attention to details and basics of dancing. But her moves are sometimes short-cutting and her height makes her over-dance to not look stiff. As of now, I'll probably tie Yeri and Joy.
I respect your opinion and don't want to try and change it but I really don't think Yeri is the "worst" dancer in the group. Especially with the recent fancams and in the dance practice you can see she has sharp moves, she's very detailed especially with details such as footwork, and she also improved her stage presence a lot. Again, not trying to change anyone's mind but I find it sad that people often overlook all that when it comes to her...
As a former dancer myself, I completely 100% agree with your opinions! I think many people forget to take into account the difference between and idol dancing and dance in general. Someone can be great at doing Kpop idol dances but be a not-so-good dancer overall. Wendy for me has been RV's third best dancer since around late 2017, and I'm glad someone finally mentioned how much she improved since RV's debut

it's not always about the dancing technique, if someone clearly looks like they're enjoying their craft it's amazing to watch. In RV that's Seulgi, Wendy and Joy for me: they're almost always smiling and looking like they have fun. Irene has good/bad days, Yeri was... not good in 2018 but she's been looking much better on stage this year. That makes a lot of difference tbh.

Joy was great during Bad Boy era which I think people forget was in 2018. But she was ill during Power Up era, and sadly was recovering from a shoulder injury that had sent her to hospital just before RBB era began (she had to get injections for the comeback to deal with the pain). You can see though in 2019 Joy absolutely did shine on stage, and her dancing and energy for Zimzalabim and Umpah Umpah was excellent.
My ranking would be: 1. Seulgi 2. Irene 3. Joy 4. Wendy 5. Yeri As a dancer myself some of the critiques in the video made sense, but others seem misattributed and incorrect. I think everyone can agree that Seulgi really is meant to be a main dancer. Irene has great training over many years but I agree she can lack a spark and power (however she has great dance ability). Joy actually does have a good sense of rhythm and is consistently in sync, and although she can lack power she does have good dance ability. Also Joy doesn't over-dance, that's really clear to me. Wendy does put power into moves but can be off beat with the group because of over-dancing (her energy is great and I think she can dance but it can also look like she's performing a zumba routine), and when Yeri puts in effort she also can put in power but she's often off the beat making her moves look more awkward (Yeri suits certain types of choreo). As a dancer I think having a solid grasp of the basics whilst being in formation and in sync with the music is primary, especially if you're in a group. Having more energy or power into moves doesn't equal better dance ability. That's why even though Wendy has more energy, Irene is still a better dancer etc.
your explanation sounds more valid to me, than this video since i saw her did not address some points like yeri's frequent out of sync, or wendy's off beat moves that came out too powerful that may looks awkward. i think joy's long limbs are both her advantage and weakness. their choreography looked more full when they put her limbs to use when joy stands in the centre to sing bridge in butterfly, the choreo looks fuller and wider. though her limbs may be weakness for her as she is the only one on the taller side and with long limbs in the group, thus she had to control her moves to match her members. i fully agree with seulgi and irene.
@@cuetzen712 Yes, I thought some of the main points I would've deemed most important and significant in assessing dance ability weren't really addressed in this video. I agree that Joy's height means she's aware of how she needs to move in order to be in sync with the choreo formation, and how to match her dance lines to fit the group. This means Joy's actually very precise, and although she is less powerful, her moves are controlled and deliberate. In a way this makes it harder for her, but Joy manages to have quite beautiful dance lines and is one of the most in sync members (particularly matching with Seulgi) so she really does make it work. I think that should be commended (and is another sign that she is indeed a good dancer).
@@abyrea1453 Yeah I feel like Seulgi is definitely the standard as the main dancer and I think Joy is one of the members who is consistently most in sync with her. You can especially see it in certain moves that Joy matches her dancing (down to even her hands) with Seulgi. Certainly something that seems to be underrated by some, but a really important quality to have as a dancer.
I think one of the reasons why joy is ranked lower, is because their stylists don´t have empathy with her, and always give her ridiculous tight and short clothes, that makes her so discomfortable she is already taller than the other members and her legs are so much longer, i always realize how tensed she is at their performances, so she losts her naturally at dancing, but i think that even with that she is still have really poweful movements and in the term of stage presence and facial expressions, her pocket is full of that, because of her amazing acting skills , she always makes me so impressed at her stage presence and her facial expressions, she can give all of her to get in the concept perfectly, she transforms into the characther easily, that´s what I most like about her on the stage, have you all seen her in the peek a boo era? She could make everyone think that she is not joy when performing, it looked like she was that characther from the peek a boo history at the hole time.
seulgi is definitely a top dancer, no doubt about that at all. irene dances so smoothly and feminine-like. my baby joy always seems like she's trying to preserve her stamina and energy in her dances (since she las low stamina), so she ends up doing less and providing less energy, but still nailing the details. wendy's dance is so powerful imo zimzalabim wendy is the best thing that has ever happened. as for yeri, sometimes she's really good, but she always misses the details in her dances, for example hand movements, leg positions/angles etc and sometimes she seems like she has a hard time coordinating her movements to the way she wants them to be? but she was really good in umpah umpah.
As a dancer myself I have to agree with the majority of what you said. However, when it came to Joy and Yeri, I would disagree. Joy although not a particular great dancer has the ability to draw you in with her moves which is great considering she is an idol. Her moves are neat and well done. Zimzalabim was a great era for her when it came to the dance. Yeri on the other hand always me me uncomfortable when I see her dancing, maybe it’s her lack of confidence but who knows. She’s also is very stiff with her moves and sometimes she’s too fast with her dances and the group doesn’t seem in sync because of it. I think both girls could still improve if given the right time and for them to find their own personal style. Anyways, thank you for sharing your opinion. I have to agree with everything said with Wendy, Irene and Seulgi.
yaaaas main vocals Wendy & jihyo are rising as potential lead dancers ahahahaha but on a more serious note, it’s so satisfying to see how far their efforts have brought them👍 it’s no secret that main vocals are usually on the weaker side of dancing (hence their focus on vocals) but seeing how seungwan and jihyo slowly rising to the top through their effort and hard work makes me so proud 🥺😭❤️
Jihyo has always been one of the better dancers in Twice though like that girl can MOVE while Wendy started off as the worst but her hard work really brought her up

Yeah, I watched Red Flavor this year and when i compared to the old video, it just like they danced it too much and then it seems boring for them (IDK maybe ) so that they did not show off the vibe they used to give, as well it seems like they were afraid to move,.....Irene is over flexible in her moves throughout UMpah UMpah and it is really not in sync with Seulgi next to her.....

But in term of professional dancing, then Chaeryeong is better at technicality (Before anyone attack me, put down your pitchforks. At weekly idol when chaeryeong Ryujin and Yeji danced CN said that itzy's main dancer is Yeji. Chaeryeong is better with choreography but Yeji is better in freestyle and stage presence . I'm learning dance for 13 years now and we're always told that dancing isn't always about sharp stiff moves. You need to catch the audience's attention and you need stage presence.

In terms of freestyle, i honestly think confidence also matters A LOT ... wendy has always been so confident to do things and just let herself go ... while yeri and irene, they are so shy and i think that is really a hindrance for them to do a freestyle ... they can but they are too reluctant or shy to do it ... so for freestyle matter, i think it can only be judged if all members really go off 100% and do their best ... irene and yeri obviously just lightly do it without any intention to really do it cause of the embarassment 😅😅
My ranking is probably the same as yours.. Only I would put Yeri as last.. She underdances a lot.. giving the expression of boredom.. While Joy's dancing just looks fun in upbeat dances and she can also be sensual Wendy,uwu I love her energy and facial expressions Irene, her flexibility gives her an advantage,her dancing is pleasing to the eyes. And.lastly Seulgi. ,She can adapt to any dance I think,. She is really an allrounder

She's my bias but even I myself would rank her 3rd because she can sometimes overdo moves (such as the ZZB chorus dance where they move their arms and legs to the front and back or the RBB part before the last chorus where everyone breaks their backs lmao (EDIT: oh and we don't talk about the Rookie chorus... my girl always breaks every bone in her body during that one particular move)) and I think if she could tone it down just a liiiittle bit it'd look even cleaner and people would stop saying she's lacking skills. I respect your opinion, and it's good that you motivate although I think a bit of it is misdirected. I'm also a dancer and I'd agree to disagree with the last three. 1. Joy. To put her last because of a 'disadvantage' she can't control (her length) I think is weird, and I relate cause I'm also quite tall. It should actually be a merit to her that she looks just as good, because she's overcome a hindrance in her length. Her stage charisma (I would even put it past Irene) and body control is still better than the others', and if anything I think she underdances at times not overdances. I have personally seen no one complain about her stage presence as a Reveluv of 4 years. She's also more versatile as a dancer and performer; whereas Yeri suits 'Velvet' more and Wendy 'Red', Joy can execute both well. I suggest you rewatch Bad Boy and Dumb Dumb first stages back to back. 2. Wendy. She's had enormous improvement which is why she's climbed from last. Her exuberance is really good during 'Red' performances but somewhat exaggerated, same with her dancing. She's still stiff in places and overdances which makes her look awkward, and that kind of proofs she lacks in body control for me, even if she has okay freestyle and is most athletic (but these things don't necessarily equate to better dancer). 3. Yeri. Unlike Wendy she had more of a natural feel for dancing and has potential, but hasn't done anything with it. She still lacks charisma and has remained quite the same, stagnant, since 2015. In their earlier stages she's even been out of rhytm with the rest (it's easy to miss, but it's like half a beat ahead). If we talk about shortcutting, I actually think she does it just as much as Joy.
That's a good point about Joy's height since I actually think it shows how good she is as a dancer that she matches her members so well, making sure to be precise with her placement and body control to match their height and poses. She makes the choreo look good and is especially in sync with Seulgi. Her main flaw is that she doesn't hit the moves as "hard" although she always puts 100% in and it's really just a question of health and stamina. I've never seen her not give her all and I've never seen her over-dance. Also have to agree that she's very versatile and can do red and velvet concepts well, and particularly velvet. I just watched Joy's solo dance stage and I don't know how anyone could rank her last in dancing. So much stage presence and great dancing; brilliant dance lines and sense of rhythm.

Irene is also a good dancer for kpop industry, great body work, she doesn’t over dance, but sometimes she tends to under dance, but only sometimes. She has great potential. Now, I have hear about the long limbs of Joy... Like, dude that doesn’t matter at all, seriously. Even tho she only was a trainee for 2-3 years, and was not into dancing, she is pretty great. Especially in sexy style, she does great at their choreography and is good at freestyle. Also, great charisma for me, good muscle control. I have never seen over dancing or under dancing tbh, she is average in a good way. Given tho her health issues that we heard about. Wendy has improved. Her freestyle is great, good sense of rhythm. Stage presence on point. But yeah she sometimes over dances, that’s normal. And Yeri, she is really average to me. Sometimes I feel like she needs to move her body more, work on isolation. More smooth in her movements. But she has improved, we all have seen it. She looks great in stage with her beauty and keeps up. But I feel like she under dances to much. That’s my big opinion.

Thank you so much. I always wished someone noticed Wendy's facial expression, her stage presence and her dances improvement. She improves so much but she is so underrated. Her fancams do not gain as much views as I feel that they deserve. I am not even a fan of Red Velvet, but I really hope to see more of Wendy and Red Velvet.

I don't know why you used power up stage for Joy which was a weak era for her while using stages of strong era for other members. She was amazing in zzb and umpah umpah and rbb. Even her fancams are the most watched in zzb thanks to her strong stage presence and dancing. I think it's not fair to show a weak era for Joy and strong era for the other members

I definitely wouldn't put Joy as last in dancing. When Joy isn't in tight short skirts or injured, she's the 3rd best dancer. No-one is on the level as Seulgi or Irene so I don't think any of the other members are in the official dance line, but for me, Joy comes the closest overall when she's at her full potential. Joy's in sync with Seulgi and the beat of the music, she has fluid and expressive movements, beautiful dance lines, and the stage presence to make any choreo look good (just see her in every single special stages she's performed in ). Joy was actually praised for Bad Boy and RBB (where she was still recovering from a shoulder injury), all of which happened in 2018 too.

@@deobijungs Actually in Red Velvet the Main Dancer is Seulgi and the Lead Dancer is Irene, so Yeri is not part of the dance line. Yeri is sub Vocalist, Sub Rapper and Maknae. I've never written that Yeri doesn't know how to dance, only that, in my opinion, she still has to improve compared to the others.
I think Red Velvet overall choreograph has been decrease in complexity recently. After Rookie, none of the choreographs look like a real dance routine. When they first debut, the choreograph is hella hard.
For me 1. Seulgi❤ 2. Irene ofc 3. Joy (she improved a lot) 4. Yeri (it's inconsistent but she has better technique than wendy) 5. Wendy ( she got the feels but she often over dance and it looks weird and awkward) still love her tho❤

Tbh especially after the latest comeback with Psycho I personally feel that Joy deserves to be dead last because she has absolutely zero expressions (like attempts were made from Irene and Yeri but Joy just went nada), and couple that with her not-so-fantastic dancing (like she's not natural dancer with style kind like Seulgi) she'd be down there
Yeah if we’re going off stage presence then I’d have to agree with you. I really hope Wendy gets well soon and returns, her energy on stage is so wonderful. And Joy’s stage presence has especially been brilliant in the last year with her expressions, that’s undeniable. There’s a reason why Joy’s Zimzalabim face cam reached a million views and her Bing Bing fancam reached a million in a week. Also loved how she embodied her role in Psycho and how she danced her center part in the MV. Anyway hope we see all the girls performing together again soon!

As a dancer myself i just have to say i love yeri but she's very stiff..and as you say she didn't really improved since icc era.. it's something with her hips that's stiff- you can see that in rbb-omg part when she isn't flexible..for me because of that reason and the fact red velvet has alot of hip movements i think joy is a bit better.. but i hope she can work on that cus her potential can be really big. Don't agree with Wendy being 3rd, but definitely think she has improved. She tends to overdance. As for performance style (which is subjective and not objective anyway) I don't really tap into it sometimes. Gives me Kbopz feels with the red tracks especially, but her dancing never lacks energy at least and her voice is so good so who cares? However when it comes to dancing only, It's her execution that does at times get off track, additional movement that isn't supposed to be there, etc. People can credit energy, but when it comes to footwork hers is among the worst in red velvet whereas Seulgi and Irene have the better footwork. Even Yeri at times. Ironically while Yeri has inconsistency, when she is on on she is very good. Reminds me for example with the "Look" practice where a pro could even pin point Seulgi obviously as the main dancer and also gave proper credit to Yeri too. "Rookie" is another example of Yeri being excellent as well, RBB, etc. She was essentially on par to even Irene in that era.
Even before starting, I knew either Seulgi or Irene would be no. 1. Until now, I didn’t even know they were the main and lead dancers but it makes sense hahaha

idk if yall took time to watch yeri’s recent fancams or just decided to ignore it but she improved so much and build her confidence up. I just hate to see how you all underestimate her that much instead of congratulating her for all the effort she puts into dancing which is probably why she didn’t have much confidence at first. (in Umpah Umpah and Zimzalabim) Her moves are sharp and she puts a lot of details into her dance, she also execute her moves powerful and with a lot of energy (her footworks are amazing). Her back is not as stiff as it was before (it was her biggest issue and she even said it herself, surely due to the change of body with puberty and lack of confidence) and you can obviously notice this by watching Power Up fancams from august 2018 and august 2019. She also serves a variety of expressions now and uses her hair to give a good image overall. Her stage presence is on fire these days. Yeri is back to her dancer position with Irene and Seulgi and i’m proud of her achievement. My final ranking: 1. Seulgi 2. Irene 3. Yeri 4. Wendy 5. Joy

I'd swap Yeri and Joy. Also the first time they appeared in Weekly Idol (OT4 era) and had a freestyle dance, Joy did some body rolls and it was sooo smooth! I think one thing to consider for Joy are the dresses the stylist puts her in. The stylist puts her in extremely short and tight dresses and they seem very uncomfortable and hard to move in.

Absolutely. Joy is consistently given tight short dresses (in non-stretch fabrics) that restrict her movements when dancing. You can see the difference when she's given shorts or pants (or dresses with side slits/stretch fabric). Another factor too is the selective fancams frequently used for Joy. Joy was actually ill during Power Up era and the example of her "freestyle" was her being asked to remember a dance she did back in 2014. Joy's a better dancer than she's given credit for.
i think one of the major things when it comes to yeri's dancing is confidence, she was criticised so heavily from debut and went through a lot 2017-18 and i think it really affected her confidence and consequently her stage presence

Can we also mention that Joy is several inches taller than every member in her group. That makes it significantly harder to match the movements of the members who have shorter limbs and are more matched in proportions to her. Its harder for her naturally, regardless of skill. I also don't think she is given the best outfits to dance in, which dont help
i totally agree with you. if you've seen joy's mr mr performance with her 96' friends hayoung and yerin, you could see joy is so used to matching her members' heights in rv choreos that in the special performance, she looked much shorter when dancing with her same-height/taller friends. i dont know how to explain this since im not a dancer but point is, joy definitely dances in a way that hides her height different with the rest of the rv members.

As a dancer for over 19 years, I'll just give my own opinion. Seulgi is my favorite dancer and she actually helped teach Joy to dance as a trainee. Joy is also one of the most consistently in sync with Seulgi which is a massive pro and indicative of dance ability and co-ordination of rhythm, something that wasn't mentioned in the video. I actually would say Joy has a natural ability and sense of rhythm, but with the shortest trainee period she was less developed at debut. She’s definitely improved a lot since then, which has been demonstrated by her recent Psycho performance on Handsome Tigers (wearing comfortable pants) and with her Tango solo dance. Joy is usually given tight short dresses to dance in, but when she gets to dance in appropriate outfits she can really show her fluidity and clean dance lines (see also Sunny Side Up! and Bing Bing fancams).
Joy’s biggest weakness is her stamina, and knowing that she has underlying health issues it’s clearer to see why she sometimes doesn’t hit moves as hard, but it should be stated that this is separate to actual dance ability. Also with her taller height, she is more careful to match the other members, something she actually does consistently well making her movements more refined. Joy's actually only 167cm, her height doesn't affect her ability as a dancer in general, it simply means that in the group she has to alter her movements to ensure she matches the formation (which she does). After watching things like Joy dancing in the streets of San Francisco and her flamenco performance in Seville, it's obvious that Joy can freestyle and that she does indeed have a natural sense of rhythm.
I think Joy’s a better dancer than she’s given credit for and her fancams are always some of my favorite to watch (Joy's Zimzalabim Facecam remains the most viewed Female Idol Facecam on SBS's RUclips channel). I'd also recommend people watch the group Sunny Side Up fancam from Inkigayo which especially shows Joy's dancing ability. The Power Up fancam used for Joy in this video is from 2018 and was from a period of time we now know Joy was suffering from health issues and I don't think the style of Power Up choreo is at all reflective of her full abilities. I'd personally have compared all the members using the same set of fancams eg: either Zimzalabim or Umpah Umpah era fancams. I also think it's important to clarify that Joy wasn't "heavily criticized" at all during Power Up, it was a singular comment from a forum. Joy's actually been consistently praised for her stage presence and dancing over many years by Korean fans, it's really never been an issue for her. Anyway I think Red Velvet are such an amazing group, all with their own strengths, and I hope all the members will be reunited soon on stage.

@fharla dongcoy Yes I remember on Idol Room the members were asked to dance to Havana and Joy and Seulgi really went for it (also previously Joy and Seulgi had a viral video of them dancing together to Havana which was great). Even just from seeing Joy dancing in the streets of San Francisco, it's very clear to me that she has an excellent sense of rhythm and really feels the beat of the music (which is why she's so in sync) and that's something as a dancer I view as very important.

I completely agree with your ranking. I think Wendy's dancing is really underrated. The only thing I would change: I'd put Joy 4th and Yeri 5th. Despite being in the same level as technique, I think that Joy overall has a better aura (except for that no stage presence phase in 2018) and I think that the basics of dancing are also quite useful and important. I'm also an ex-dancer myself (10 years) but you probably have more experience than me and probably even started dancing before me, so I completely respect your opinion.
Edit: I watched more fancams and I don't know who to put 5th and who 4th. Yeri has sharper movements and put much details in her dancing, and her stage presence has improved, but she sometimes under-dances. Joy, on the other side, I think has better stage presence, and she also pays attention to details and basics of dancing. But her moves are sometimes short-cutting and her height makes her over-dance to not look stiff. As of now, I'll probably tie Yeri and Joy.
I respect your opinion and don't want to try and change it but I really don't think Yeri is the "worst" dancer in the group. Especially with the recent fancams and in the dance practice you can see she has sharp moves, she's very detailed especially with details such as footwork, and she also improved her stage presence a lot. As a former dancer myself, I completely 100% agree with your opinions! I think many people forget to take into account the difference between and idol dancing and dance in general. Someone can be great at doing Kpop idol dances but be a not-so-good dancer overall. Wendy for me has been RV's third best dancer since around late 2017, and I'm glad someone finally mentioned how much she improved since RV's debut

it's not always about the dancing technique, if someone clearly looks like they're enjoying their craft it's amazing to watch. In RV that's Seulgi, Wendy and Joy for me: they're almost always smiling and looking like they have fun. Irene has good/bad days, Yeri was... not good in 2018 but she's been looking much better on stage this year. That makes a lot of difference tbh.

I feel like Joy looks amazing on stage when she's having fun and that's when she truly shines as an idol-dancer and her fancies turn out great, throughout 2018 I don't think she enjoyed herself performing. Overall, I love 2019 Joy and hopefully she'll continue being amazing!!!
Joy was great during Bad Boy era which I think people forget was in 2018. But she was ill during Power Up era, and sadly was recovering from a shoulder injury that had sent her to hospital just before RBB era began (she had to get injections for the comeback to deal with the pain). You can see though in 2019 Joy absolutely did shine on stage, and her dancing and energy for Zimzalabim and Umpah Umpah was excellent.

As a dancer myself some of the critiques in the video made sense, but others seem misattributed and incorrect. I think everyone can agree that Seulgi really is meant to be a main dancer. Irene has great training over many years but I agree she can lack a spark and power (however she has great dance ability). Joy actually does have a good sense of rhythm and is consistently in sync, and although she can lack power she does have good dance ability. Also Joy doesn't over-dance, that's really clear to me. Wendy does put power into moves but can be off beat with the group because of over-dancing (her energy is great and I think she can dance but it can also look like she's performing a zumba routine), and when Yeri puts in effort she also can put in power but she's often off the beat making her moves look more awkward (Yeri suits certain types of choreo). As a dancer I think having a solid grasp of the basics whilst being in formation and in sync with the music is primary, especially if you're in a group. Having more energy or power into moves doesn't equal better dance ability. That's why even though Wendy has more energy, Irene is still a better dancer etc.
your explanation sounds more valid to me, than this video since i saw her did not address some points like yeri's frequent out of sync, or wendy's off beat moves that came out too powerful that may looks awkward.
i think joy's long limbs are both her advantage and weakness. their choreography looked more full when they put her limbs to use when joy stands in the centre to sing bridge in butterfly, the choreo looks fuller and wider. though her limbs may be weakness for her as she is the only one on the taller side and with long limbs in the group, thus she had to control her moves to match her members. i fully agree with seulgi and irene.
@@cuetzen712 Yes, I thought some of the main points I would've deemed most important and significant in assessing dance ability weren't really addressed in this video. I agree that Joy's height means she's aware of how she needs to move in order to be in sync with the choreo formation, and how to match her dance lines to fit the group. This means Joy's actually very precise, and although she is less powerful, her moves are controlled and deliberate. In a way this makes it harder for her, but Joy manages to have quite beautiful dance lines and is one of the most in sync members (particularly matching with Seulgi) so she really does make it work. I think that should be commended (and is another sign that she is indeed a good dancer).

@@abyrea1453 Yeah I feel like Seulgi is definitely the standard as the main dancer and I think Joy is one of the members who is consistently most in sync with her. You can especially see it in certain moves that Joy matches her dancing (down to even her hands) with Seulgi. Certainly something that seems to be underrated by some, but a really important quality to have as a dancer.

I think one of the reasons why joy is ranked lower, is because their stylists don´t have empathy with her, and always give her ridiculous tight and short clothes, that makes her so discomfortable she is already taller than the other members and her legs are so much longer, i always realize how tensed she is at their performances, so she losts her naturally at dancing, but i think that even with that she is still have really poweful movements and in the term of stage presence and facial expressions, her pocket is full of that, because of her amazing acting skills , she always makes me so impressed at her stage presence and her facial expressions, she can give all of her to get in the concept perfectly, she transforms into the characther easily, that´s what I most like about her on the stage, have you all seen her in the peek a boo era? She could make everyone think that she is not joy when performing, it looked like she was that characther from the peek a boo history at the hole time.
seulgi is definitely a top dancer, no doubt about that at all. irene dances so smoothly and feminine-like. my baby joy always seems like she's trying to preserve her stamina and energy in her dances (since she las low stamina), so she ends up doing less and providing less energy, but still nailing the details. wendy's dance is so powerful imo zimzalabim wendy is the best thing that has ever happened. as for yeri, sometimes she's really good, but she always misses the details in her dances, for example hand movements, leg positions/angles etc and sometimes she seems like she has a hard time coordinating her movements to the way she wants them to be? but she was really good in umpah umpah.

As a dancer myself I have to agree with the majority of what you said. However, when it came to Joy and Yeri, I would disagree. Joy although not a particular great dancer has the ability to draw you in with her moves which is great considering she is an idol. Her moves are neat and well done. Zimzalabim was a great era for her when it came to the dance. Yeri on the other hand always me me uncomfortable when I see her dancing, maybe it’s her lack of confidence but who knows. She’s also is very stiff with her moves and sometimes she’s too fast with her dances and the group doesn’t seem in sync because of it. I think both girls could still improve if given the right time and for them to find their own personal style.
Anyways, thank you for sharing your opinion. I have to agree with everything said with Wendy, Irene and Seulgi.

Jihyo has always been one of the better dancers in Twice though like that girl can MOVE while Wendy started off as the worst but her hard work really brought her up

Yeah, I watched Red Flavor this year and when i compared to the old video, it just like they danced it too much and then it seems boring for them (IDK maybe ) so that they did not show off the vibe they used to give, as well it seems like they were afraid to move,.....Irene is over flexible in her moves throughout UMpah UMpah and it is really not in sync with Seulgi next to her.....

I'm learning dance for 13 years now and we're always told that dancing isn't always about sharp stiff moves. You need to catch the audience's attention and you need stage presence.

In terms of freestyle, i honestly think confidence also matters A LOT ... wendy has always been so confident to do things and just let herself go ... while yeri and irene, they are so shy and i think that is really a hindrance for them to do a freestyle ... they can but they are too reluctant or shy to do it ... so for freestyle matter, i think it can only be judged if all members really go off 100% and do their best ... irene and yeri obviously just lightly do it without any intention to really do it cause of the embarassment 😅😅

She's my bias but even I myself would rank her 3rd because she can sometimes overdo moves (such as the ZZB chorus dance where they move their arms and legs to the front and back or the RBB part before the last chorus where everyone breaks their backs lmao (EDIT: oh and we don't talk about the Rookie chorus... my girl always breaks every bone in her body during that one particular move)) and I think if she could tone it down just a liiiittle bit it'd look even cleaner and people would stop saying she's lacking skills.
Overall, your criticism is very valid and I loved this video. People who are actually pissed can't accept the fact that their favs aren't perfect I guess...? 🤷🏻♀️
I respect your opinion, and it's good that you motivate although I think a bit of it is misdirected. I'm also a dancer and I'd agree to disagree with the last three.
1. Joy. To put her last because of a 'disadvantage' she can't control (her length) I think is weird, and I relate cause I'm also quite tall. It should actually be a merit to her that she looks just as good, because she's overcome a hindrance in her length. Her stage charisma (I would even put it past Irene) and body control is still better than the others', and if anything I think she underdances at times not overdances. I have personally seen no one complain about her stage presence as a Reveluv of 4 years. She's also more versatile as a dancer and performer; whereas Yeri suits 'Velvet' more and Wendy 'Red', Joy can execute both well. I suggest you rewatch Bad Boy and Dumb Dumb first stages back to back.
2. Wendy. She's had enormous improvement which is why she's climbed from last. Her exuberance is really good during 'Red' performances but somewhat exaggerated, same with her dancing. She's still stiff in places and overdances which makes her look awkward, and that kind of proofs she lacks in body control for me, even if she has okay freestyle and is most athletic (but these things don't necessarily equate to better dancer).
3. Yeri. Unlike Wendy she had more of a natural feel for dancing and has potential, but hasn't done anything with it. She still lacks charisma and has remained quite the same, stagnant, since 2015. In their earlier stages she's even been out of rhytm with the rest (it's easy to miss, but it's like half a beat ahead). If we talk about shortcutting, I actually think she does it just as much as Joy.
That's a good point about Joy's height since I actually think it shows how good she is as a dancer that she matches her members so well, making sure to be precise with her placement and body control to match their height and poses. She makes the choreo look good and is especially in sync with Seulgi. Her main flaw is that she doesn't hit the moves as "hard" although she always puts 100% in and it's really just a question of health and stamina. I've never seen her not give her all and I've never seen her over-dance. Also have to agree that she's very versatile and can do red and velvet concepts well, and particularly velvet. I just watched Joy's solo dance stage and I don't know how anyone could rank her last in dancing. So much stage presence and great dancing; brilliant dance lines and sense of rhythm.

Seulgi we all know she is excellent at dancing hiphop, popping, sexy style, etc. Great muscle control, great charisma, stage presence, good isolations.
Irene is also a good dancer for kpop industry, great body work, she doesn’t over dance, but sometimes she tends to under dance, but only sometimes. She has great potential.
Now, I have hear about the long limbs of Joy... Like, dude that doesn’t matter at all, seriously. Even tho she only was a trainee for 2-3 years, and was not into dancing, she is pretty great. Especially in sexy style, she does great at their choreography and is good at freestyle. Also, great charisma for me, good muscle control. I have never seen over dancing or under dancing tbh, she is average in a good way. Given tho her health issues that we heard about.
Wendy has improved. Her freestyle is great, good sense of rhythm. Stage presence on point. But yeah she sometimes over dances, that’s normal.
And Yeri, she is really average to me. Sometimes I feel like she needs to move her body more, work on isolation. More smooth in her movements. But she has improved, we all have seen it. She looks great in stage with her beauty and keeps up. But I feel like she under dances to much.
That’s my big opinion.

Thank you so much. I always wished someone noticed Wendy's facial expression, her stage presence and her dances improvement. She improves so much but she is so underrated. I definitely wouldn't put Joy as last in dancing. When Joy isn't in tight short skirts or injured, she's the 3rd best dancer. No-one is on the level as Seulgi or Irene so I don't think any of the other members are in the official dance line, but for me, Joy comes the closest overall when she's at her full potential. Joy's in sync with Seulgi and the beat of the music, she has fluid and expressive movements, beautiful dance lines, and the stage presence to make any choreo look good (just see her in every single special stages she's performed in ). Also Joy wasn't criticized heavily in 2018 for her dancing at all... there was literally one comment during Power Up era on Pann about her energy (when she was actually unwell) in an article criticizing Irene and Yeri specifically. Joy was actually praised for Bad Boy and RBB (where she was still recovering from a shoulder injury), all of which happened in 2018 too.

I think Red Velvet overall choreograph has been decrease in complexity recently. After Rookie, none of the choreographs look like a real dance routine. When they first debut, the choreograph is hella hard.

Yeah if we’re going off stage presence then I’d have to agree with you. I really hope Wendy gets well soon and returns, her energy on stage is so wonderful. And Joy’s stage presence has especially been brilliant in the last year with her expressions, that’s undeniable. There’s a reason why Joy’s Zimzalabim face cam reached a million views and her Bing Bing fancam reached a million in a week. Also loved how she embodied her role in Psycho and how she danced her center part in the MV. Anyway hope we see all the girls performing together again soon!

The best part of Wendy dances is she always enjoy and get excited about her dance, which is already 60% of good dancing for me.
As a dancer myself i just have to say i love yeri but she's very stiff..and as you say she didn't really improved since icc era.. it's something with her hips that's stiff- you can see that in rbb-omg part when she isn't flexible..for me because of that reason and the fact red velvet has alot of hip movements i think joy is a bit better..

Don't agree with Wendy being 3rd, but definitely think she has improved. She tends to overdance. As for performance style (which is subjective and not objective anyway) I don't really tap into it sometimes. Gives me Kbopz feels with the red tracks especially, but her dancing never lacks energy at least and her voice is so good so who cares? However when it comes to dancing only, It's her execution that does at times get off track, additional movement that isn't supposed to be there, etc. People can credit energy, but when it comes to footwork hers is among the worst in red velvet whereas Seulgi and Irene have the better footwork. Even Yeri at times. Ironically while Yeri has inconsistency, when she is on on she is very good. Reminds me for example with the "Look" practice where a pro could even pin point Seulgi obviously as the main dancer and also gave proper credit to Yeri too. "Rookie" is another example of Yeri being excellent as well, RBB, etc. She was essentially on par to even Irene in that era.

I agree with your list but I don’t know whether to switch Yeri and Wendy or Joy and Yeri cause to be honest they all seem pretty even but one does something better than the other. Thankfully Yeri is gaining confidence and getting better and Joy is starting to have charisma like Wendy and Seulgi😊
tbh if it was their debut days wendy could rank 5th but currently right now,it seems like yeri is the one i find to be 5th for me since i always observed her now not having the same stage presence, she's sometimes not on point/rhythm and underdances (i dont hate yeri) if i would rank it.

Wendy such an ace for me, she dance so good, singing is number 1, and rap with swag style.. her stage presence is amazing too
idk if yall took time to watch yeri’s recent fancams or just decided to ignore it but she improved so much and build her confidence up. I just hate to see how you all underestimate her that much instead of congratulating her for all the effort she puts into dancing which is probably why she didn’t have much confidence at first.
(in Umpah Umpah and Zimzalabim) Her moves are sharp and she puts a lot of details into her dance, she also execute her moves powerful and with a lot of energy (her footworks are amazing). Her back is not as stiff as it was before (it was her biggest issue and she even said it herself, surely due to the change of body with puberty and lack of confidence) and you can obviously notice this by watching Power Up fancams from august 2018 and august 2019.
She also serves a variety of expressions now and uses her hair to give a good image overall. Her stage presence is on fire these days.
Yeri is back to her dancer position with Irene and Seulgi and i’m proud of her achievement.

if this is the level of rv third best dancer, i would agree that rv has the worst dancers, stage presence, and charisma in sm history. for their third best dancer always embroiled in stage laziness, out of sync controversies after their comebacks loll. i have lost count of the gifs yeri being too fast, off beats, or out of sync in her stage controversies. and she is supposedly rv third best dancer lmao. rv has low standard

I'd swap Yeri and Joy. Also the first time they appeared in Weekly Idol (OT4 era) and had a freestyle dance, Joy did some body rolls and it was sooo smooth! (Lives rent free in my mind) Anyways, I love how you mentioned that Seulgi & Wendy are consistent performers 😊 Yaass! They always give their all, I don't see them showing signs of tiredness in any performances. (I'm not hating on the other members! We all have our ways in handling fatigue)
