I wonder if you mean change over dots? If so they are not spontaneous. Change over dots were not used for first run film TV shows but were often added to re-runs or old movies as cure for commercials. Original dots appear on the upper right hand corner of the frame but added dots can be anywere and some times just X's were scratched on the film. Real change over dots are related to the familiar count down leader. First dot is to start the second machine, second dot is to change over lamp and sound to the second machine.
@user-wh3pr3zv1k Good golly, I don't remember making this year to two year comment, but when I have time, I'll watch and see if I can find what I mean and give you a time stamp
@user-wh3pr3zv1k Facinating, just fascinating. Ruins the production, but somehow, 70 years later, I don't mind, in fact, taking it farther and find it exilerating.
Jack told them not to "act". He insisted they speak their lines as if they really experienced them (he wanted *realism* in their dialogue). A teleprompter helped off-camera as well.
I've always loved Jack Webb's voice, I bought the book he wrote. It was very interesting. He looked so authoritative and professional even when he was younger.
Part of the inspiration for Dragnet came from a movie called "He Walked by Night" in it Jack Webb plays the SID investigator played by Olan Soule in many Dragnet programs. Webb had a small stock company of actors who he liked to use.. IMO, the first couple of seasons were better than the later shows. Webb had a strange sense of comedy which he became less and less able to resist.
Cliff Arquette is the grandfather of Patricia, Rosanna, Alexis and David Arquette. Also, at 15:41 the husband, played by Tom McKee, is drinking a 6 oz Coke Cola, when I was a kid I drank them by the truck loads.
Good catch. Charlie Weaver pulled Joe Friday completely out of character. Joe smiled. Maybe he chuckled quietly sometimes. Never saw a sh**-eating grin like that before! 🏆
I know Frank Smith got shot in one episode. Are there any when Friday got wounded or Gannon? Still working my way through them. Wonder if the prominent calendars seen in the episodes represent sponsors, TWA in this episode.
@harlankrissoff9966 it's actually pretty rare in real life for police officers to shoot someone or be shot by someone. I did play EverQuest with an FBI agent who was shot through the front door of a meth house as they breached and he was in the hospital for 3 months.
How strange, he said he had no reason to kill her. I think he meant he didn’t kill her for any good reason. They argued prior to him strangling her. He obviously got angry enough to kill her. Then his anger being out of control was the reason.
Wow, where do I start? The circus guy's the first one. Glad he found his girlfriend. The boarding house woman(yeah, i know she was on the Waltons) her tone of voice, cadence and affect so judgemental. But, those were the times. Waitresses in coffee shops, so well dressed. All the boardwalk concession guys were, men. No women and all well dressed, one with arm gaiters, like 1920s bank clerk, or general store owner. Everyone is well dressed, respectful of each other and able to hold an adult conversation. Last, but not least, the suspect. Greasy, pencil mustache, slimy and wearing a bow tie. A BOW TIE!!

Those spontaneous white film circles that flash from time to time only add to the charm of old school film and television shows of this era.

Just after 0:42 I think is what I was referring to. Is that the change over dots you was talking about?
@@johnny-becker Yes, that is a cue for a commercial. Not original but often seen on TV prints.

Trench coats in Southern California...love the show
I like the way Webb wore his hat.
How Jack Webb got every actress & actress to speak like he did is amazing.
Jack told them not to "act". He insisted they speak their lines as if they really experienced them (he wanted *realism* in their dialogue). A teleprompter helped off-camera as well.
He would be appealing to many women and most on dragnet are appealing also, even the crooks.
It’s his job. He’s a cop 😂
It was do that or not get hired.
@@mick7evenAye, he carries a badge.
9:31 One of the Baldwin sisters (the recipe) of The Waltons fame.
Glad to see these black & white episodes on youtube only the color version airs on t.v .

He's the man that you send in to arrest Chuck Norris....if Mr.Norris would happen to break the law....
See him in "the Last Time I Saw Archie"
I always liked dragnet . I was too young to watch this series from 50s but the 60s and early 70s I was an avid fan .
Yay, Olan Soule! One of the Dragnet regulars!
Quite the poster of "boo, muggles, weed" Ray's got on display in the opening scene.

The radio shows were also broadcast in Black and White
I had no idea of that fact.
🤠
@@77thTrombonevery good both of you.😮

These shows are well thought out and produced. I would say they fall under crime drama,
Good old Cliff Arquette (Charley Weaver)!
glad he found Maud👍🏼
Originally telecast on May 21, 1953, and adapted from a November 22, 1951 radio episode.
Barry I. Grauman Wow! Exactly 12 years before JFK was assassinated! 😃
Thank you Barry
You're VERY welcome! 🙂
9:07, this character actress appears in a number of Dragnet episodes.
Im from Michigan the license plates stays with the person not the car ?
I heard of a security consultant who was hired to guard a billionaire's mansion; he had his cell's ring tone play the "Dragnet" theme.

6:41 -- Perhaps the only time Jack Webb ever broke character on screen.
I don't see anything out of character there-- he chuckled at Frank pretty often
Nice catch. He’s full out laughing.
**********Funny you caught that, the actor he’s playing against was improving for fun*********

5:22. Isn't that a left hand in the picture when he's handing him his ID card with his right? Weird.
At least Al P. Morgan was able to find good old Maude. The actor became known as Charley Weaver.
Charley's real name was Cliff Arquette.
The moral of the story is, if the police accuse you of a crime and they have virtually no evidence, don’t immediately confess you did it.
I know Frank Smith got shot in one episode. Are there any when Friday got wounded or Gannon? Still working my way through them.

Al Morgan ....Cliff Arquette. He was Charlie Weaver, on the Hollywood Squares in the 70s?

It's Miss Emily one of the Baldwin sisters from the Walton's - or is it Maimie?
Yep. Miss Emily.
