Really like the shot you took at (11:47) don’t be too hard on yourself, Gary. All you can do is work with what light you have at the time. As always a great Vlog along with some stunning woodland images. Thank you.
It is hard to take Mr Griff's advice. "Never mind you had a nice am out". It does seem to matter what we shoot landscape or woodland we are never 100% satisfied about the light. You still managed to get some great shots. Keep going back & soon you will be rewarded. At least in this lockdown we are still allowed out, if that wasn't the case I would be struggling bug time, as would many others. Keep well & keep safe.
Another really good vlog enjoyed it as always loved the images with the people in never apologize for saying what you think great as always keep safe and well Burt
Very interesting about the light, thats why I go out on dull days you dont have to get up early either. You got some good images so it was all worth it, thank you.
Wise words Gary, been telling myself the same in recent photography outings, enjoy the great outdoors first, it’s a bonus if you get decent pictures. We all probably heap too much pressure to bag great shots every time we go out. My favourite image was at 13:30 a real explosion of autumn colour
See you had the whinge, got it off your chest, then enjoyed the moment. Liked the “chocolate box” images but have to agree the ones from the first visit were the icing on the cake. ‘Til next time stay safe
Hi Gary - previous days visit did have some lovely images but your first shot on the vlog is way far my favourite!! - subject - subtle light - leading line - all great learnings for me. Not going to comment on moaning - you got the 'bird' anyway!!😂🤣 Thanks Gary - great vlog - take care 👍📸👌
Thanks for sharing this with us, I liked the images at 7:18 & 9:09. Woodlands have many moods and on a sunny day with the birds singing it might just be best to put away the camera, soak up the atmosphere and let it work on your soul. Stay safe.
Just being out mate is to me worth more than the images, embrace it all and if you don't manage an image there is always tomorrow. I have missed getting out in my ancient woodland near me the last 16 weeks but hopefully I'll be out soon. Great vlog and never give up
Mate, you hit the nail on the head, I often go to the same woodland time after time sometimes following the exact same route and yet, one day I’ll get images that I’m happy with and another day, zilch!! That’s just the weird & wonderful world of landscape photography I suppose. Luckily for you on this day you got some great shots, well done.
Having a good old moan is good for the soul, Gary! After a while the penny drops and you appreciate being able to get out and enjoy the freedom that being a photographer gives you. All that silence. All that space. Some lovely images to take home, too! Don't be too hard on yourself in future.
Another stunning location for woodland photography, not awfully far from Beds, is Burnham beeches reserve in Buckinghamshire. Stunning in autumn, full of hollow ancient beech trees.
Can really relate to this, I love to shoot light but in the forest it can potentially be your worst enemy and it’s very hard to make yourself go in conditions you wouldn’t normally shoot a landscape in. As it happens you got some cracking images ! Very enjoyable Vlog 👍🏻
Ahhh, that whole video is me and woodland in a nutshell! I imagine many others feel the same too. Its the most frustrating but rewarding genre of all imo. All you're earlier gripes were me at Ashridge on Saturday, I didnt really get to the realisation and nirvana point you reached later on though, nor did I get any decent images! Really enjoyed this, and tbh I think some of your better woodland images, keep em coming mate
Gary Lovely pictures, for me the two with the persons walking in a lane are the best my sort of picture, woodlands are alive and we should all stop and listen to nature. Keep up the good work and we all like a good moan.
Loved the fact I'm not the only one who complains sometimes about too much sunshine. Wonderful images, really liked the ones with the people, something I leave out, maybe not any more? ( small gripe, the music interfered with your speech for me, hearing loss doesn't help. Captions kept saying competitions not compositions! I do sometimes turn off videos, frustrating when trying to look at a video, but having to read captions, which also hide part of the scenes. try watching this with your hands over your ears, and read the captions.).
I have done this a few times myself, complain about the lack of a sunset or colour only to get home and review the footage to see actually it was pretty good , i also like the images at the end with the people in the scene they were lovely mate, chocolate box or not
Ah Gary, that was brilliant. The moment when the birds were telling you you'd been moaning too much 😂. That looks a cracking place, you'll have to take me there after LD2. Some serious good images in this and your'e right your woodland photography has improved massively (it was already pretty damn good though!) My fav was at 12:50
Gary - your disappointment is quite natural. We all hope every day is a good one (every golfer wants every shot to be at their best level, every fisherman hopes to catch something as large as their best etc) and when it isn’t we feel let down. Not vlogging may have helped you get in the moment one the first trip, certainly expecting to give the audience a feel of what you experienced and then not being able to do it must have added to the letdown. Just got to keep getting out - if it was perfect every time we would soon have a portfolio that we could never improve on, then why would you keep going out? As for not finding your composition, if you download and join the ‘what3words’ app you can precision pin locations to use in the future (and share them or not) - it is a great app now being adopted by emergency services and delivery companies etc that can really help photographers log where future shots could be taken and to find them again with real accuracy. On guess work with what tree it is - another app - ‘picture this’ identifies the tree/plant once you take a phone photo of it. It is reasonably accurate and makes you sound really knowledgeable. And, for what it’s worth, I thought your photos looked pretty good. Mark
Aaaaaargh, there's too much light. You lucky, lucky b'tard. I've been out about five times in the last seven days, standing in my cold wellies just waiting for a break in the cloud. You shoot the light you're given I guess and pre-visualising what you want can sometimes be the enemy of making the best of what you have. The important bit is that you enjoyed yourself (go on, admit it, you love a good moan) and you came away with something. You got some really good shots on both days. Technically, I don't see a problem with taking two shots a couple of stops apart and just blending them. Personally, I wouldn't sweat about exposing for the highlights and letting the midtones and shadows do their own thing. If the compositions good it'll probably hold together.
Slow mo of leaves falling!! A struggle but paid off, honesty is the best policy but you are tough on yourself vocally and the shots don’t represent match with that voice. Your past woodland images have been superb but this felt like you had a real strong grasp and produced high quality beautiful photography. 👉7:17 👈 mic drop! Oh yea correct 10:22 that’s why! It’s happening 🙏

Lovely shots all of them
Absolutely gorgeous place and photos 💕

Worth the visit and no doubt a revisit some time down the track

Used to vist H&R regularly when I lived nearby. Nice location, top images too. Can see why you went back to video 😊👍🏻
