In real life, our smoke box is grey, and so is the firebox. This is due to graphite. We use graphite on these areas, as it helps with heat retension, and helps keep rust away. I am gonna have to make one of these now. absolutely amazing work.

Just got time to sit down and watch the vid fully and I’d like to say that it looks great! Thanks for the shoutout as well! While I’m here, just wanted to ask you how you painted the smoke box? Awesome job dude!

Glad you asked. I used some acrylic paint to paint the smokebox, whistle, as well as the pilot because there was some white color forming on it as well on the panel above it while the glue was drying. After the glue dried, i painted on the glue as well to make it like the pilot is actually connected just like the old one. I was incredibly nervous painting the pilot, smokebox and wheels because for an HO scale engine, it was tough trying not to get any of it on like the side rods, the actual body of the engine, and the pilot wheels. The whistle though wasn't as tough as those since i painted that before removing the mth one and applying the new one on.
