Songwriter’s Story: When the old demo kicks the crap out of your new version

  • So… this is about my next single Tongue Tied… a song I wrote as a metaphor for some of life’s challenges. It was written not long before I lost my voice to Vocal Cord Paralysis.
After i started singing again (in an ever changing new normal) I started gigging and added a new version of Tongue Tied (new key/melody/changes/vibe).
Just this week I was completely going to release the “modified” version of TT but it was not coming out easily. After several less than sorctacular but adequate arrangments, I went back and listened to the old original demo. There was the vibe. So I quit forcing the other vreaion, started a new session and copied my old demo.
Luckily I was able to sing it in the old key again. Even during a “not feeling so crash hot” spell. 🤕 🤢
    So.... 🙌 yay.
But it’s funny because the single before last (Shadow People) was not coming as easily as I had liked… so long story short, I had a few versions in the DAW that I was pushing and… I went back to the exact arrangement copying the original demo.
Sometimes the magic happens when it is first written. Other times? Not so much. There’s no hard rule right?
I do focus on not pushing too hard. Is that a rule? Sometimes. So not a hard rule. Sometimes it pays off. Like my last single BFF. That one didn’t come easily. It took ages. (Ages to me is months… i am known to write and record and have a mix ready in a day or 2)
Well… the melody, basic chordal idea came quickly. The lyrics too. But the production and arrangement took some mental hopscotch (i love Missing Persons) and an inspiring new plugin along with a bedroom pop sample pack.
