How to shorten a cable without it fraying

All the other guys solder the ends before cutting for for a clean solid tip, any flaws there ?

I haven't tried the solder method personally but I'm sure it would work. The only flaw I could think of is the end would be bare and if you try to solder the tip it would melt the pre existing solder and the cable could unwind
