Diane's enthusiasm for food is as important as her espousal of communal eating - family and friends eating food they've fixed. I've noticed a swift rise in parents (particularly moms) not cooking. Their kids have a very limited diet of takeout and they also grow up without knowledge of cooking The cycle repeats. Gone are the church picnics and perhaps soon, large family gatherings of home-cooked food. Already at our celebrations many are bringing "store" food (transferred to their own cookware). My mom learned from her mom who instilled in me a love of cooking. I do all of it and my wife is grateful. I taught both boys to cook and they learned to try new foods at every opportunity. I get picks of grills, plates of veggies or requests for "that rub you used last Friday".
They’re not poor just because they live a village lifestyle. Our culture is very warped in the US and so is our definition of rich and poor. My take is that a lot of cultures don’t modernize because they already function in a healthy way.
