I noticed that when you added proper to the Job pill in Rows that the column header reads "PROPER([Job])". How do you return the header label as just "Job"?
hi tim need a help.....in tableau i have region and city in text table......i need to sort the city of central and west in alphabet ascending order and east in alphabet descending order and south in data source order how to get this kinda output......pls do help me
Tim i have Tableau 2022.4 and can't use the function. I've tried googling why I can't and nothing comes up. I asked everyone at work and they don't know why. Have you heard anyone having this issue that had the upgrade?
It might be tied to the data source you're using. Have you tried it in the sample workbooks that Come with tableau to check it works there? If so then its potentially a limitation of the driver or database you're using. That's usually the only reason why a function might not work. I know it sounds crazy but also just double check your version. Let me know if that doesn't work.
@@lgarvey2001 That's the one. That said if you take an extract I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. It might just be the live connection that has the issue.
PROPER is only available for some flat files and in extracts. If you need to use PROPER in a data source that doesn't otherwise support it, consider using an extract. This is from documentation help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/functions_all_categories.htm
hey it won't fix every problem but regex could solve that alongside a conditional statement or you could feed it specific phrases and do a slightly different operation after the fact.
Thanks!
Finally, a proper Proper function. 🙌
Thank you Tim 😀
You are very welcome
@Tim you are awesome 👍
Danke

@@TableauTim thank you!
Did this function get removed? It doesn't show up in 2023.1.x anymore

@TableauTim Tyvm Tim! I am using a published data source and that explains it! Thank you for the help!
is proper function work only for Excel ?
im not an excel expert but try it. This is just about the capability in tableau.
Some names have this kind of format Ayrton Senna da Silva. How would PROPER work here? Ayrton Senna Da Silva? Still not good ;)

This function doesn't exist anymore
It does. It depends on your data source. It’s only supported on certain databases that support the function.
@@TableauTim I'm using on Tableau Desktop in a string. And is not recognize the function. Is this function just for Tableau Prep?
@@nandaspla which version of Tableau are you using? it does exist. help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/functions_functions_string.htm
