That was an excellent run!!! I adore Lanturn and I am happy he went through without any resets! That is a huge win in my book, especially considering his limited learnset! Good Job, Matt!
Lanturn's one of my favorite Pokemon, not least because it's one of my dad's favorites too. They'll always hold a special place in my heart, doesn't matter how fast they are. They're reliable, lovable, and that's what matters. It's nice to see a truly real run done with them. Thanks for making this, it brightened up my day. Besides, I've got Alolan Ninetails as a top tier speed run if I really want that. That one was fun.
Under rated channel. Seriously. The amount of work you put into these videos is astronomical. My favorite part is that you animate your sprites when they’re damaged or using an item. Such a cool feature.
Lmao that start was brutal. I alwasy thought lanturn and mantine were cool water types with purposeful visual designs. Not the best to actually use in game tho which is too bad but I still like em
Great run it was a ton of fun to watch and you're correct most pokemon won't have elite runs and that's what makes this kind of content so amazing in my opinion your getting the best out of the pokemon to get as fast a run as you can without using cheap tactics thatd make any battle a breeze and the true real ones understand
I was, for some reason, hoping to see angry eyebrows on Lanturn’s hurt sprite in the early game while using Flail strats. 😂 Thanks for the video; you’re a true real one.
Kind words. Appreciate that, but for every 1 or 2 successful people that get to do this for a living, there's hundreds of thousands of people with just as good content just chilling and having fun with it when they get time from their irl responsibilities lol.
I sometimes forget Lanturn is a thing, like many other Pokemon, but like many other Pokemon, I appreciate its existence, and am quite glad to see what it could do here despite the rough start.
Im legit impressed with your generation 2 knowledge I expected alot of mistakes in general considering you dont play gen 2 much I DO LOVE the chuck brother thats pretty cool you incorporatedthat in (he's unfortunately trash except for fire types in which hes actually a massive wall)
TRUE REAL ONE I always wanted to use a Lanturn in my runs due to the type combo, but that learnset left more to be desired. I think you did a great job showing off how well this Pokemon can do!
True real one. I dont quite remember if I ever saw Lanturn in this game as a kid. Generation two is so weird for hiding all the new pokemon from players but I personally enjoy watching these "forgotten pokemon runs".
My made roms are in Red but I'm not sure when or if I'll do Rotom and if I do I'm not sure what version I'd do. There's probably better picks I'd think.
Great vid as always! Your channel is my favourite Pokemon related content. Even though it wouldn't have made any real difference it says you were using the Mystic Water for Clair on the overlay, so with Nevermeltice you'd have got the ranges on the Dragonair at level 44 still?
Haha when I said it I thought I hope I don't come across as being negative or nitpicking. The flail play was cool, it's interesting to see what strategies work especially when they can be overlooked
Lanturn is a Pokemon I honestly like but in a very cool way. It's neat and I've used it in a gimmick run but it always came too late for me to want to put it into one of my teams usually. I did a run a fairly long time ago using 6 Slow growth rate Pokemon in Johto and it was really important in that run because of how bulky it is and its access to Electric STAB, but that's the only time I used it. It's just neat. As for Hitmontop I always like, feel an urge to defend weird little dudes like this, but I think in Gen II it's probably a little better positioned than Hitmonchan is (starting off with Rolling Kick is nice!) but I'm not sure it would do particularly well regardless. Regardless on if it's good or not though, it's time to be a true real one. Thanks for the video as always~
Appreciate it! Hitmontop just feels uninspired in gen 2. Like a tacked on 3rd wheel. Hitmonchan is what it is but it’s like punch version, kick version, spin on your head version?
Great videos as always. I want to give my thought on what you said about doing minimal training until blue and then just grind on the elite 4 for red. The trainers in Kanto for the most part are roughly the same level as the elite four anyway and a lot of the trainers are more closer together and you can heal at the center if you need to so I think in the three minutes it took for you to go through the elite four, you probably could have gone through twelve or thirteen different trainers on the various routes and probably get more experience, and if there was a Pokemon so bad that it needs to do elite 4 for grinding, it would probably be too weak to face the elite four anyway. But it is a good question where you asked it is worth experimenting. It might be the most optimal if you ban curse though because curse lets you go into red at much lower levels
I'm going to have to disagree about the level thing. I have the master list of trainers and an extremely high percentage of Kanto trainers are in the level 28-33 range. I'm talking like 90% of them. In fact, there's only 6 trainers in the ENTIRETY of Kanto that have a Pokemon 37 or higher. There's only 4 trainers spread through different gyms that have a level 37 on their team and there's 2 little bitty trainers in the entire region not related to gyms that have level 38 Pokemon and they almost exclusively have 1 or 2 Pokemon on the team since 37 is just too high in the game's mind. That's the max level for Kanto. Level 38 and you'll only find it on two trainers that aren't mandatory. Sure, you can find 12 or 13 Kanto trainers but considering the low level ranges from 27-34 outside of very rare exceptions, you'll just be getting a fraction of the experience with them being more spread out. It's definitely not as efficient as the straight line, 5+ team, 40-46 elite 4 training. Crystal is kind of like the wild west anyway. It's even more niche than gen 1 solo runs so technically anyone can say anything is good at this point though and like you said, it's a strat that doesn't really apply to the curse meta and I think everyone just does that for Red these days.
Lanturn wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I actually keep forgetting it's a Gen 2 mon and keep thinking it was added in Gen 3. This video is a true real1 with the Kabuto butts.
I always hear that about Skarmory. I guess since I grew up with the games and got into them, I never think of them like that. Was Lanturn even featured in Gen 3? Skarmory is in the flying gym so I get that.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I think you could get it by diving? I've been playing since Gen 1, but for whatever reason there are some random early Pokemon I forget the generation for. The newer ones are actually proving harder to remember for whatever reason. I'll have to see about this memory...
Yea! It's a menace in Pokemon Go PvP since leagues are structured around a stat called combat power and the 1500 league lets weird Pokemon shine. For example, Medicham is top meta. Carbink is insane. Azumarill is a forever staple. Lanturn and Noctowl ruled it for multiple seasons though.
Lantern slaps. Not insane for damage, horrendous learnset in gen 2, but what a great defensive mon for Nuzlockes. It has very few weaknesses (hits one of them super effective with stab, the other it learns Ice Beam to cover), it picks up Volt Absorb in gen 3 which makes it nutty vs any gen's obligatory electric gym since they usually don't carry coverage that hits Lantern super effective, it carries defensive EVs really well due to the high HP, it gets to clown on Flying/Water/Rock/Ground types [some of the most common types in the main games], and in later generations it gets to pick up really broken moves - Stab Scald and Stab Volt Switch most notably. One carried me through a Sword & Shield nuzlocke and I've seen it do a ton of work on Pokemon Challenge's runs.
It definitely shows that the devs never intended for us to change the starters. When you're able to catch it you already have surf and it's at a high enough level to already know spark.
In gen 1, the lack of breeding made it sensible from a game designer standpoint to not bother giving okés level up moves before the level you can get them. You really notice the gen 1 DNA still running amok through a lot of gen 2 despite the myriads of things gen 2 already fixed from gen 1.
spitball theory about the radio tower: Perhaps it hints at a prior badge order post-morty, with Pryce being badge 5. This would shift the player to go to Mahogany and Rocket HQ first, after which (huge theory) they would open the Radio Tower, making it available before the 5th badge (just like Silph). There’s potential evidence still left over in the levels of the trainers and even Pryce compared to Chuck+Jasmine. At least, if the game were to be completed in this order, Johto’s events would feel a lot closer to Gen 1 Kanto. As for why Pryce’s badge was shifted to 7th… idk.
0:05 How is it a dolphin! It doesn't even have horizontal tail fins, hell it doesn't even have a prominent dorsal fin which interestingly most electricity producing fish don't... though technically in angler fish the lure is modified dorsal fin... anyways it's a mix of an angler fish and idk a generic fish lol.
Don't get too caught up in little sayings. It's a Lanturn at the end of the day but it's too cute to be an angler fish. I guess I picked the correct term because I got a few comments. I wonder if I would have called it a #2 lead pencil or a Ford truck if anyone would have said anything.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Haha yeah it's not like it bothers me or anything, i just find it funny and heck if just one person reads the comment and maybe learns something I think it's worth it.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 usually mine considering the 3-13 last season 😂 I don’t want them to win a ton, but not knowing the ending of a game before it starts would be nice, I guess
Lanturn did its best 🥲👍I agree that it definitely feels like someone had a bone to pick with Lanturn; despite that, Lanturn feels like it's been sort of a cult classic Pokemon, almost like Dunsparce. I know a lot of romhacks make a point to buff Lanturn. As we can see with Rotom-Wash, Water/Electric is a pretty solid defensive typing, and Lanturn has pretty decent bulk already.
From the first to second run. Figuring out levels and ranges to get past challenges. Subpar Pokémon can get really tedious on the first playthrough, sometimes having to just start over.
True real one Ive always loved lanturn, though there is no reason for that slow level up group, those stats do not back it up. I do wonder how it would play out in a gen 3 run with 5 gyms it's super effective against
Chuck brother!!! I think lanturn is going to be a pretty decent run. Not top tier but a good run. Starting move pool is going to hold it back from being great.
25:47 Okay, I think I noticed an issue here, but I'm not sure if I'm forgetting something. Returns effective power is shown as 114, you're holding the never melt ice and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought return capped at 102?
It feels like, just like a lot of other Water type pokemon in Johto, once it gets access to Surf, Lanturn just speedbombs the rest of the game. Even moreso once it gets Spark. But getting to that point is excruciatingly painful to play.
Basically every Johto run. Is the Pokémon competent? If so, you’ll either hit a point you outlevel most things and even if you are weak to Chuck, you’ll cruise through eventually in an optimized run.
It never is lol. I don't bring it up in videos anymore. I just have fun with it. Pleading to some unknown and hidden algorithm sucks the life out of things.
No swim to Cinnabar… first love doesn’t die my Tombstoner brother! Real one ☝️ love this run. Wtr elc are great types but slow growth rate is just BS dude. You did Flipper justice!!!
Please correct me if I’m wrong but shouldn’t you learn hidden power dragon against Claire? It’s literally the same as hidden power ice except it’s super effective against the kingdra too. If you are going to replace it with ice beam later anyway, is it really just Karen’s vileplume you are worried about? I guess it doesn’t matter but I just think it eould be a cool option since I never see this hidden power choice.
Hidden power dragon isn’t ever really an option just because you sacrifice some HP to get it. Ice lets you keep the 15 HP DV and does everything that it does outside of the Kingdra and even though I think I forgot the pink bow in the video, it still worked out. It’s not really because it’s bad, it’s just HP Ice is probably the best overall hidden power for utility whereas dragon isn’t flexible at all and ice has a lot of uses offensively.
A real one comment. Loved the vid, and I think lanturn is a bad ass pokemon. One of the few mons I did a solo run through with on gold. Had a good time, but DAMN my early game was so ass
I remember the first time i saw its pre evo, i was hyped to use and lvl it up because of its typing, and was ultimately kinda dissapointed of it. but it's only because i'm hard with my appreciation! to be honest it has one of the best dual type of the fanchise with only rotom sharing it depending on the form so it needs more love from the true real ones. Edit: it was a good run tho and i didn't think it would have a hard early but eh gen 2 movepool did him kinda dirty
I love hitmontop but admit that he was terrible for a few generations. I also love lantern and loved using it in gen 6! Dazzling gleam, surf, ice beam, and thunderbolt
Lanturn is one of those pokémon I never would have guessed the growth rate. It is always weird to see meh to average pokémon with the slow growth rate.
Candy early when experience is weak and use the strongest trainers in the game to catch up at the end is the strat I think. Saving candies just for Red is just slow.
Headbutt denial for Lanturn? I have a feeling Gen 1's rival isn't the only CUK in these solo runs. You'd think they'd opt for Body Slam for Pineco instead of Headbutt. Look at it. It's all body! I never really gave Lanturn or Chinchou the time of day in Silver or Crystal, but I did like the typing from afar. Plus, it's a cute angler fish. Those aren't common. The concept of a Special-stat tank is neat, especially as it's sluggish. But as it were, peril strats are pro strats with Flail early on. Weird or not, Lanturn makes it as a true real one. ...also. Given that the Rocket takeover has levels similar to Whitney's, maybe it was supposed to happen much earlier in the game, before the finished version of the game? Like, when you first get to Goldenrod, or soon after?
You know, I'm not sure about the Rocket takeover. It just seems like an oversight. Just something easy for the player to do to feel powerful and happy but when you do it a lot it's just meaningless lol. It's just this little gauntlet where PP is the challenge most of the time. The hideout already occupies the mid game like a Silph equivalent but Gamefreak wanted two I guess.
I do think it's really odd aesthetically that you can repeatedly pummel the elite four to get infinite money. Where do they get all that money from? Are they taxing people to get their funding? XD
Lanturn is legit in my top 3 favourite pokemon. Every game I'm saddened that it has no moves :( Part of why I love romhacks. They give it the love it deserves. Also, unknown can flee?!
@GymLeaderMatt1987 chinchou suffers too :/ even in later games with physical special split it only gets like bubble, water gun and and its spark/flail become physical. I've done plenty of runs of the regular games but set chinchou as my starter and it's always terrible except for kanto.
I'll save you the time for every Crystal video ever. It takes 15-20 minutes to finish up Kanto. I'd rather just stop the timer at Blue since I'm not using Curse and we are seeing what a consistent and realistic Red strat looks like 'off the clock'.
Always liked Lanturn, had an unique typing for quite a while, unfortunately it doesn't really have the stat distribution to take advantage of it. Slow and bulky is not what you want to be, when doing an in-game run.
I wonder if it could make sense to blackout train against the Elite Four (so lose against Lance on purpose to train for Red). I don't know if it would take longer to be knocked out compared to going back to the league every time. Obviously it wouldn't work if you want to get money too or use Return against Red becausd of the friendship-lost after the blackouts. So it wouldn't work here but maybe in other cases, I'm not sure.
I mean if you can just beat Lance easy, why not just beat him? What's the benefit of blacking out rather than just winning? He gives the most experience for a repeatable trainer in the game.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 That's why I'm not sure if it's worth it. But blacking out against his last Pokemon and respawn in Front of the league might be faster than go into the Hall of fame respawn at home, swim right to Kanto and fly back to the League. But it obviously depends on a lot of factors. Especially how long the black out would take.
I think you are underestimating how quick you get back to the league. Before the hall of fame loads it saves and you can just force reset and not watch it. You load the game, head right for literally 3 seconds, then fly there. I bet it takes longer than that to hope that Gyarados beats you.

Great video, True real one!
Appreciate that, brother.
Lanturn and Octillery are kings in GSC. Such weird water types but I love them dearly. True real ones.
Octillery is weird and absurdly slow lol. I don't know why they gave new Pokemon such bad speed to the point Lanturn's looks pretty good.
It’s kind of like Umbreon that I’m working towards now. Very bulky and reliable but bulk just isn’t going to rise in the ranks of a solo run.
It definitely shows that the devs never intended for us to change the starters. When you're able to catch it you already have surf and it's at a high enough level to already know spark.
It's hit or miss. Some Pokemon start with crazy good things, others have no thought put into it.
In gen 1, the lack of breeding made it sensible from a game designer standpoint to not bother giving okés level up moves before the level you can get them. You really notice the gen 1 DNA still running amok through a lot of gen 2 despite the myriads of things gen 2 already fixed from gen 1.
spitball theory about the radio tower:
Perhaps it hints at a prior badge order post-morty, with Pryce being badge 5.
Makes sense. I’d rather see less trainers and higher level Pokémon.
I love Lanturn it’s one of my favorite electric types and my favorite water type
You are double dipping then!
Maybe they'll find out Lanturn is a Ford F-250!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 That would be shocking ; )
Not too shocking since Lanturn doesn't start with an electric move.
Just the pick me up I need after my team got decimated today, bless
Someone’s team always has to lose, brother.
It just needed to have Thundershock at the start.
what's the most difficult part of routing and refining runs with sub-optimal mons?
From the first to second run. Figuring out levels and ranges to get past challenges. Subpar Pokémon can get really tedious on the first playthrough, sometimes having to just start over.
fun run!
I thought so too!
Also it isnt a dolphin as the first dolphin pokemon was Finizen.
I'll call it a monster truck if I want to lol.
True real one
Ive always loved lanturn, though there is no reason for that slow level up group, those stats do not back it up. I do wonder how it would play out in a gen 3 run with 5 gyms it's super effective against
I'm not sure the learnset ever gets really good. It'll be interesting to look at one day.
True real one, Brother
Appreciate it.
Aww, Lampy boy did kinda well
Even just thunder shock would have made the run much better.
Chuck brother!!! I think lanturn is going to be a pretty decent run. Not top tier but a good run. Starting move pool is going to hold it back from being great.
You already know I'm a true real one brother!
Oh yea, slow level up group and poor early moves is the challenge here.
"Second trainer to the right" (Bugsy's gym) reminds me of Peter Pan.
I can't say I remember any details about that trainer at all.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 just a line from the movie, "second star to the right"
Nice. Can't say I've kept up with my Peter Pan lines over the years.
Water/electric typing really leaves just grass types to be worried about in-game plus the level curve makes Johto pretty easy
The start was brutal lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 starting with bubble & no electric move is tough though the games were never designed with these challenges in mind
If they were, every run would just be good lol.
Water/Electric is such a great typing. Too bad it's so rare.
At least Rotom Wash is in the medium-fast leveling group if you want to do a run with it.
The leveling group alone sounds like it would make it good. There’s like 47 versions of Rotom to pick from so I’m not sure what I’d end up going with.
25:47 Okay, I think I noticed an issue here, but I'm not sure if I'm forgetting something. Returns effective power is shown as 114, you're holding the never melt ice and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought return capped at 102?
Whitney's badge. 12.5% increase.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987
Alright, 2 things
1) That was fast
2) I figured I was forgetting something
Oh, I'm studying for tests and I guess you commented right when I went outside to take a break and check comments.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987Nice, good luck on your tests!
Watching you optimize this was fun. YOU are a true real one. Thank you and have yourself a fantastic night.
It was a forgotten pokemon but on my last nuslocke of crystal,Lanturn was the mvp super underrated
True real one
Appreciate it! Yea it’s really bulky for real.
I can't wait till your beedrill run ❤
I’m sure it’ll be alright, just not in crystal.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ah there never any crystal runs for it :/
True real one
Appreciate that!
May the algorithm be with you
It never is lol.
True one ☝️ 😅😅
A Lanturn evolution, even if it’s mostly a side grade would be cool for the next gen
They kicked this one to the curb, haha.
Me am a true real one - ive had a terrible day thank you for the video to cheer me up
Appreciate you being here!
It wasn't great but it won't be the last bad early game in Johto lol.
Very dirty! I love the design and the Pokémon but the early game here is brutal.
I love hitmontop but admit that he was terrible for a few generations. I also love lantern and loved using it in gen 6! Dazzling gleam, surf, ice beam, and thunderbolt
Snorlax eats it for lunch when it’s all special. I hate Red’s Snorlax a lot haha. Good set though!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I used it in hoenn so I didn't have to worry about Snorlax 😊
The Truest and realest of the real ones! Believe it!
That’s straight facts.
dude, my pc died, i'm in someone else's laptop so my account is only in an private tab. Also lanturn is a cool mon.
Gotta get that mobile phone lol.
I always liked lanturn, the 0 reset but slowish time actually fit him quite well. This is a bulky cuddly boy, not a speed demon 😊
Exactly. Bulky tanks are usually just slow and steady.
Lanturn deserved an early thundershock on its learn set. One of my favorites though, good or not.
It would have made a world of difference. No early grinding, super effecting on Scyther and Faulkner. It would have been great.
Lanturn is one of those pokémon I never would have guessed the growth rate. It is always weird to see meh to average pokémon with the slow growth rate.
Yea I think the learnset bothered me more.
Tombstoner brother!!
Appreciate it, brother.
True real one!
Appreciate it, brother.
Running the elite 4 over and over is smart
It's hard to make an anglerfish fish look cute, but Pokemon managed it!
I do think it's really odd aesthetically that you can repeatedly pummel the elite four to get infinite money. Where do they get all that money from? Are they taxing people to get their funding? XD
It's like the government I guess. The people pay.
I hope Lanturn can shine a light on the Johto experience
True real one
It definitely gives the real Johto experience lol.
Lanturn is legit in my top 3 favourite pokemon. Every game I'm saddened that it has no moves :(
Part of why I love romhacks. They give it the love it deserves.
Also, unknown can flee?!
It was bad early but to be fair, when are you ever going to be using a level 10 Lanturn.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 chinchou suffers too :/ even in later games with physical special split it only gets like bubble, water gun and and its spark/flail become physical.
I've done plenty of runs of the regular games but set chinchou as my starter and it's always terrible except for kanto.
It would be bad in Kanto too. Bubble only is a slow burn. Ask Horsea, Poliwag, and Krabby.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure not to try it.
Would love to see how lanturn would do in yellow
I generally do Red for my cross gen runs but unless it gets some godlike learnset in a later gen, it would just be a mid run.
True real ones here brother
Appreciate it.
Maybe in gen2 make 2 time splits? Johto and after the elite4 in Kanto?
I'll save you the time for every Crystal video ever. It takes 15-20 minutes to finish up Kanto. I'd rather just stop the timer at Blue since I'm not using Curse and we are seeing what a consistent and realistic Red strat looks like 'off the clock'.
I like the suprised pikachu on red
I got a couple. Been working on ‘optimizing’ my gen 2 editing and routing process. It takes me too long but this is a step in the right direction.
Have you ever been headbutt by a ghost? 😂😂😂
They really sat around and thought ‘how can we make this early game even worse?’
we dont kink shame lanturn here
Never!
Always liked Lanturn, had an unique typing for quite a while, unfortunately it doesn't really have the stat distribution to take advantage of it.
Slow and bulky is not what you want to be, when doing an in-game run.
The speed isn't the problem, it's the movepool really.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 That's why I said that I don't know it.^^
