The Russo's talked a lot of nonsense during the film's promotion to appeal to tamil audiences. Don't get me wrong, I was extremely happy that Dhanush was in a big Hollywood production but Hollywood doesn't cast people just because they admire them. It's all about money.

i would say Leo and Scorsese's collab is an analogy to Dhanush and Vetrimaaran's, that's like a guarantee you can have before even thinking about the movie synopsis or reviews. You just know it's gonna be a worthwhile must watch
This movie portrays the level of oppression historically endured by some commumities, that can be understood from the issue of wearing slippers. Education is such a powerful tool among oppressed classes not just to sustain livelihood and raise yourself economically, but also to understand and rise above the oppression and to not propogate it or endure it. Ignorance has kept generations submit and stay oppressed. And the lack of pov and the general hunger for power has kept generations compliant to inhuman practices passed down by their oppressing ancestors. With education, the oppressors are forced to see the problems endured by oppressed and let go of the hold. And the oppressed found their voices. These are not just entertaining, they are testament to power of education in transforming peoples lives and these movies are themselves reforming the mindsets of people. Oppressed people found their voices and movies have become a medium to showcase and educate people and has served as a tool in opening the eyes of the oppressed and oppressing alike. This movie has deep cultural significance and rooting and hence has much huge impact among Tamil speaking diaspora than anyone else. This movie and a few more that deal with this subject are comparable to "Roots". Same as the Roots which informs people of the race oppression, these deal with the caste oppression and with a productive outlook to end with. There is no way you can understand the significance or the rooted'ness of a Tamil movie dealing with such a delicate subject. So I suggest to not use your grading systems for your own benefit.
