      I was once made to take part in a company team building thing where an overpaid consultant made us go through silly games. One game was to make up a name for the voice in our head that tells us we aren't good enough etc and then we had to reveal the name to the others in the room and tell the voice to shut up. I'd zoned out of this tedious nonsense so when it was my turn I just blurted out "Bob" and said it just like Rowan Atkinson did. Everyone recognised it as being from Blackadder and several people in the room, including the consultant, nodded at me like I'd been very profound.
      I was so happy when that company went out of business.

      Rowan actually has a slight speech impediment. Any words beginning with either 'b' or 'p' triggers his stutter, and the easiest way for him to get around this is to emphasize those words.

    The whole idea with them not recognising that Kate is actually a boy is a play on Shakespeare's plays, and how characters don't recognise people they know because their wearing a mask, etc.

    The funny thing about the series is that his character always schemes and plots to become powerful, but every iteration he is born farther and farther away from it. In the first he is the son of the king, the second series he is a minor lord, the third he is servant to a lord and in the fourth he is an lower officer in the Army.

    Series 1 has a post-credit scene in each episode, Series 2 has different lyrics during the end credits of every episode, Series 3 has the most conventional end credit sequence (except with some archaic spelling) and Series 4 only takes an unconventional approach to the role of end credits in the very last episode.

    • @djco5782
      @djco5782 9 месяцев назад

      Well, Series 3's end credits are in the style of a Regency playbill and Series 4's are mostly in the style of WWI archive footage with the credits listed as military names and ranks, so they're both pretty unconventional too.

    Series 1 is set in the Middle Ages and while not as funny as later series definitely has its moments.
    Series 2 as you see is set in the first Elizabethan era; #3 was set during the Regency and #4 set during WW1. There were also a few longer episodes that were classed as specials that are also well worth a look.

    I don't know if anyone mentioned this but a interesting fact: Rowan Atkinson actually as a stutter/stammer and finds it hard to pronounce words starting with the letter B. So the writer's named the female character pretending to be a man Bob because they found the way Rowan said it would get laughs. If you notice he pauses everytime he says Bob as he has to concentrate before saying it. Bob returns with the same actress in Blackadder Goes Forth for an episode.

    As for the series: Blackadder is an anthology - they change time & start over between series.
    1 is possibly the worst as Edmund Blackadder is dumb in that one whereas he's a smart wit in the others. 2 is most popular then 4, 3 & 1.
    Rowan has a speech impediment, stutter? So he over emphasises the beginning consonants. B-ob. P-etrol P-ump.
    2 has custom outros for each episode. The rest have standard themes.

    It helps if you know Shakespeare. Women dressing as men, men dressing as women,and the audience’s willing suspension of disbelief that the protagonist isn’t aware of the cross-dressing, is a classic theme of Shakespeare, British farce, and pantomimes for that matter. Don’t think too hard about the fact that we all know she’s a woman and is obviously so. We just go along with the pretence that it’s good enough to fool Blackadder.

    SEASON 1

  • @pieceofgosa
    @pieceofgosa Год назад

    The entire episode is one long joke about Shakespearean theatre. The episode follows the basic plot of a Shakespearean comedy (misunderstandings, women dressed as men, men dressed as women, ends with a wedding, etc) & the bad disguises are nod to the fact that in the Elizabethan period women were not allowed to be actors & so all the female roles were played by teenage boys. This no doubt resulted in some pretty unintentionally hilarious performances of say, Romeo & Juliet where Romeo would be played by an overweight man in his 40s opposite a 15yr old boy in a dress as Juliet.

    I don’t think Rowan Atkinson is particularly popular in the UK for Mr Bean , my son’s Dutch girlfriend tells me that Mr Bean is hugely popular in her country throughout the generations. I am probably wrong .

    Rowan Atkinson did Mr Bean before Black Adder.

      Hope you're enjoying Blackadder, there's more actors from HP 'alumni' in another episode from this series, and another from an episode in series 3 - really funny, hope you check them out

    I'm sorry but Blackadder is SO MUCH funnier than Mr Bean is imho. I especially like his interactions with Baldrick. 😊😊😊

    This is the funniest ep of Blackadder; don't expect as many laughs from the rest.

    You did well to start with Blackadder II. Ironically, Series 1 is not the best place to start. Series 1 was definitively the worst series.

    DON'T WATCH SEASON 1! It is not in the same league. Not until Ben Elton joins Curtis does it really begin (and that is here - Season 2 Epidose 1).
