They are a great machine in many ways and last longer than the C7 unless you know what to do.

Another great video, love these early Sony Betamax machines. Never had a C5 but I’ve had quite a few C7s & have a working one now. Ps I’ve answered your email but not sure you’ve got it? Rob.

If you can adjust the tracking control widely without the image becoming bad, this indicates that the video heads are in good condition. Due to the installation direction of the tracking adjuster on this device, you unfortunately have no overview when the device is closed. I don't understand why the small diodes on the circuit board were installed in the insulating tube. This device comes from Japan and not from Europe, so you have to suppress the reflex to replace blue tantalum capacitors preventively.

Some great notes there. I did wonder about the blue tantalum capacitors but I've never really had issues with them in Japanese equipment at all. Yes, certainly a very good indication on head condition and it's why I always show the tracking range at the end of most video I upload. It is really amazing how so many machines have good heads even with fairly worn drums.

Is there something on the video board that switches off the colour during picture search and still frame? Just wondering why the C5 doesn't give colour in those modes but the C7 can. Does the signal require more processing to give a colour picture and that part is missing on the C5? Thanks.

Look up the c5 online and a website will tell you common fixes, and apparently there’s a transistor you can remove that will allow colour picture search

It's mentioned on on Palsite.com that removing the colour mute transistor will make the picture search colour and I'll more than likely do a video on this in the future.

That's interesting, I wonder if that was done deliberately to give the C7 another additional feature over the cheaper C5 rather than for technical reasons. Although I think the reasoning for buying a C7 over a C5 are more likely to be the infra-red remote control and the multi-event timer. Palsite doesn't seem to give much info on the modification, so yes it would be great to see a video on how this is done at some point.
