    but two in chinese is 'er' not 'ni.

      The current Mandarin pronunciation is not the same as the one used at the time the kanji were borrowed from China. Even today, not everyone in China speaks Mandarin. The Japanese on-yomi come from different Chinese dialects/time periods. They weren’t borrowed recently.
