  • This is the story of two men and one dream. Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson opened the Games Workshop, a fantasy games shop started in west London forty years ago. Little did they know then that it would be the start of something big, creating a lasting legacy in the world of fantasy, fiction and the board game industry.

    These guys are my HEROES, when I was a kid in the early 1980s those Game Workshops were like magic. And here I am with boxes full of Warhammer Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40K and lots of spin off games.

    It seems like GW in the 80s were more consumer friendly than they are now. They have turned into a faceless business selling expensive models (i won't call them toys as that is an insult to the time and fun people have with them). I just believe they have slightly lost their way and gone more towards pushing their products too much. Maybe its just my side of the world (aus).

    • @Exodiant
      @Exodiant 4 года назад +5

      Yes and no. I think it's inevitable that companies get more distant as they grow, they simply can't interact with their whole playerbase. But, with community reviews and things like the Warhammer Community blog, I think they're getting warmer than they have been in a while lately.

    • @peeledapples4176
      @peeledapples4176 3 года назад +2

      Of course they’re “pushing their products,” they’re a business ffs. What are they meant to do, hand out models for free?

    • @jamesbaker3153
      @jamesbaker3153 3 года назад +5

      @@peeledapples4176 Maybe take a look at the ACTUAL complaints about the company all over the internet before you let yourself think it's so simple. They charge 5-10 times more than they did when they started as a company and the items they produce cost a fraction of a fraction of what they did to make them 40 years ago even when adjusting for inflation. They are NOTORIOUS for shooting themselves in the foot for a quick profit, honestly the list just keeps going. If you want a perfectly baffling example they gave third party stores and even some online retailers a %20 or so discount depending on the place but they wouldn't ever discount anything in their own shops except for employess. Now thats stupid and short sighted on the level of basically paying people to shop elsewhere. They've made a terrible name for themselves.

    • @KelRiever

      It's a nothing special business now. There isn't anything wrong with it but whatever nostalgia there was has been dead for years. So no applause here. They made money, yey. It was hard. It's not a top 10 story, good for them, tho.

    • @jcpouzols
      @jcpouzols 4 года назад +8

      I used to think that too, back when I knew little of how those miniatures are made. But now, having worked in the creative industry for some time, I doubt one could say there really are overpriced. Think about how much goes into making a new model: you need concept artists, production technicians, box artists, warehouse workers, shipping, marketing, store staff... It adds up quickly.
      You could maybe say the X factor here is the shareholders, but then if you turn around and look at what other miniature manufacturers are charging for their products, there isn't that much of a difference.
