I don't see why it's assumed that Roy would be an upgrade. He's won in juniors, but so did Bill Laforge. And in his one NHL job he left Colorado in shambles. As for bringing a guy up from the farm, for every Jon Cooper there are 20 Mike Yeos. If you're a rebuilding team you can try with a new, young guy and hope he grows with the team, but the Rangers are expected to win and it's doubtful they go anywhere with a rookie coach just up from the AHL. That guy probably gets fired in a year & a half and they end up bringing in a recycled veteran coach anyway. I think this is the right move for this team.
Of all the mistakes the Islanders made during the Mike Milbury era (and there were plenty), getting rid of Laviolette after just a second season there is up there with the worst of them because he went on to win a cup with Carolina and take two more teams to the finals, and the Islanders didn’t have a coach of his caliber until Barry Trotz came along.
Miss the playoffs? Okay. They are more likely to make a deep run than miss out completely (barring injuries). Who in the metro besides New Jersey and Carolina is on the same level as the Rangers? It’s no body.
Laviotette's contract with the Caps was for three years, and the contract was over after this season, and both parties agreed to seek other options rather than work out an extension.

Rangers with their 4th coach since 2018. Stability is not a option. Laviolette? he's fine with that i guess, Rangers are his 6th team he's coaching for. The Gerald Gallant disrespect still goes on (99-46-19 in 2 seasons for 217 points in the standings, 13-14 in playoffs, 2022 conf. final)
Just a few years ago, I was stoked about the Rangers and thought they had a great future. One rough night against the Capitals and James Dolan had a big tantrum firing everyone. He ruined everything. Don't be fooled by the nice run the Rangers had to the conference final. This team has been headed in the wrong direction since then. A real shame.
This is a bad move for the Rangers. Definitely going in the wrong direction. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t make the playoffs. They never should have fired Gallant!
Good that they got a New England native with coaching experience and a strong resume. I'm way over 1994 and it's a shame the Rangers didn't win one for Henrik Lundqvist. Best goalie I've seen there since Mike Richter. Their current goalie is rock solid, but I don't think he's quite on the level of those other 2 guys yet. At least they're a traditional hockey city and I always root for those cities to win something. They have a solid fan base who support their team and they deserve to see some success.
They might be in on Roy and why Roy been so tight lipped as the new owner is also tied to Montral. Now that he's left the ramparts and the Senators ownership seems to be settled expect to hear that announced tomorrow .
Liked him when he first landed with the Caps but glad to see him move on. He has a real problem with giving rookies and young players a chance. Relies on old, washed up vets and stubbornly refuses to make changes.
I was hoping we could have nice things, but we are only allowed to have coaches who have fallen off the coaching carousel. Given that I guess this is the least worst recycled coach we could have gotten, but Knoblauch or Roy or Carbery (you know, the guy who got Laviolette’s old job) would have been my pick before resorting to the scrap heap.
As a Rangers fan, on the one hand I don't there Peter is gonna stand for his forwards pass before shoot mentality if the shot is there, so if they can get them out of that habit, great. On the other hand, they couldn't have waited a little longer and tried to get Patrick Roy? Really?

Gallant was thoroughly out-coached by Jon Cooper after the series shifted to Tampa. Considering the injuries TB had (Point didn't play at all), NYR really should have won. This is why they play the games, however.
Experienced coach to add structure. Looks to me like they are just grooming Knob to take over in 2-3 years. Probably the best choice of those available but that's not saying much
I was hoping, like some others on this site, that the NYR would have waited to see if Bettman "reinstated" J. Quenneville & then at least interviewed him. I think he deserves a 2nd chance to coach again in the NHL & would be best for this team. If not him, I was hoping they would take a chance on P. Roy or K. Knoblauch who is their coach in Hartford. But of all the name coaches available, I'm optimistic that Laviolette will do a good job IF they tighten up their defensive structure which I said before this season started. They should have enough offense but still need these young guys to be a level better more consistently if they are going to have a serious chance at contending. Metro div & EC in general is still going to be difficult maybe even more difficult than this yr. so the playoffs are NOT a foregone conclusion IMO.
The best candidate Joel Quenneville needs to meet the Pope Bettman to get an absolution for his sins. I was hoping the Rangers would wait another week before making their decision and consider Quenneville if the Pope grants Quenneville the absolution but apparently they want to stay away from controversy. So, frankly, as a Rangers fan used to disappointments I am not thrilled. But who knows? Maybe it's a good sign as I won't be that disappointed if Laviolette fails and will be thrilled if he succeeds. Next year will be the 30th anniversary of their last Stanley Cup which was at the time their first since 1940. So I can't say us Rangers fans are spoiled. ;) But it could be worse. I could be a Maple Leafs fan.

If Pete is your coach and you aren't winning it's because your roster is horrid or your players have their heads up their a$$es frankly. Nashville made a big mistake canning him and in my gut I believe it was because Pete was at odds with what the front office was doing. When Pete is given proper tools and allowed to do his thing with players you win period the end. We will see if the Rangers allow Pete to actually coach or not - it will be ugly if they don't. Rangers have a bit of an attitude problem in the locker room in my view and Pete is the type of guy who can fix it if they let him.
Peter Laviolette is just the 4th coach in NHL history to coach 3 different teams to the cup final. He’s had an underrated coaching career tbh

But of all the name coaches available, I'm optimistic that Laviolette will do a good job IF they tighten up their defensive structure which I said before this season started. They should have enough offense but still need these young guys to be a level better more consistently if they are going to have a serious chance at contending. Metro div & EC in general is still going to be difficult maybe even more difficult than this yr. so the playoffs are NOT a foregone conclusion IMO.
oh god, hoping i'm wrong, but this is feels like a wrong move, he is done as a coach
So I can't say us Rangers fans are spoiled. ;)
But it could be worse. I could be a Maple Leafs fan.
If Quenneville is reinstated, Mitch Miller should not be banned from the NHL.
@@ShibaInu154 Which one is better for business? This one will be spared and the other one will be the scapegoat to give the mob satisfaction.
It's how things work in our world. :(
But who knows? Cancel culture is not exempt from contradictions and certainly not from hypocrisy.
I as a rangers fan hate this hire why go younger stop with these re hires
The fanbase is furious!
No one wants this guy. I know we won in 94 but I always had empathy for fans of the Canucks because the Rangers organization shows the same incompetence and ignorance toward their fans too. The Fire Drury chants will come quickly this season.
Ahhhhhhhh... Apparently the key to ascension ... Desperate times call for desperate measures ...Cup us , you Islander reject ...
As a Rangers fan, I don't expect much past mediocrity. I'm really disappointed in this choice. Maybe I'll be surprised....but I don't know.....
Rangers have a bit of an attitude problem in the locker room in my view and Pete is the type of guy who can fix it if they let him.
only one Western Conference club he's coached and Nashville's barely Western geographically hihi😅
A very uninspiring hire
He’s not going to like Wilson as his boss.
You mean Dolan?
Hockey is a cesspool
He wont last for more than 3 years, and he’ll be on another teams bench
welcome to the 2024 draft lottery Rags😆
