I like the drum and bass remixed version of the ITN News Channel theme at the end, really funky.

On the Astra 2 Satellite, the ITN / ITV News Channel used the South Beam which covered the UK and quite a good portion of mainland Europe.

What a fascinating watch, thanks for uploading. Funny when you look back, ITN were quite ahead of their time, especially within their presence in the smart phone and DAB markets. Sadly all services mentioned weren't too last. ITN sadly didn't have deep enough pockets to keep the NC going forever, nor did NTL. I'm surprised no other broadcaster has opted for a rolling news radio service on DAB.

GB News recently has expanded it's presence as a radio channel too on DAB+ digital radio as has Talk TV UK which is bringing back this multimedia presence that ITN News Channel represented.

ITN/ITV News Channel bombed in the ratings, outdone by BBC and Sky. Not a hope in hell of it ever returning, sorry.

@@johnking5174 Wrong. It was run on a miniscule budget, did what it could on so little money and itv plc saw that's it's money could be better spent on its other channels hence why ITN closed it. Wasn't battered by Sky News or BBC News Channel at all.

@@anthonyperkins7556 Sorry, the news channel didn't do well in the ratings and suffered from a severe lack of investment. Problems with carriage deals also meant an absence of a large viewer audience. Sky News and BBC News outperformed the ITN/ITV News Channel, hence the reason why ITV chose to axe the channel in 2005. Remember they were confined to a 12 hour day by 2005 on Freeview.

@@johnking5174 The ITN News Channel did eventually expand to 24h hours a day on Freeview but this was curtailed when a multiplex swap forced it to timeshare airtime on Freeview with one of the other itv channels.
This arrangement did not last long when it got a slot of its own, and when itv news channel started identically simulcasting football matches on itv, they encrypted their Astra 2 South Beam satellite signal during the matches, due to copyright restrictions, and because, if they hadn't, they suffered the wrath of the Football League for allowing unrestricted viewing of the footie across the European continent and Astra 2's South Beam (which ITN / ITV news channel broadcast on), covered quite a good portion of Mainland Europe, not such a problem for just a news channel delivered via satellite, but when you start throwing UK sport and entertainment programming into the mix, programme suppliers and sports broadcast rights owners take a very dim view of it.
And ITN News Channel did have 24h cable system carriage around the UK on digital and analogue cable systems I.e. ntl:- Telewest etc.

A shame really, it looked so ambitious. Sadly they didn't get their carriage deals in place to give the channel decent coverage (it wasn't on Sky, and was only on OnDigital from 5:30AM-9AM) and they really didn't have the budget to pull off a polished rolling news channel. They were almost totally reliant on packages they had made for ITV/C4/C5 news but they weren't able to show them until the channel they had been made for had aired them first. This left them doing breaking news with no lives and being late with pictures, a very poor show compared to how Sky News and BBC News 24 were running. It was all over within a couple within a couple of years when ITN's majority share was sold to Carlton & Granada and it became the ITV News Channel. Always surprised me that ITV didn't do more with it though, instead it continued to get essentially no investment and was shut down altogether in 2005.

Having a tape playout back-up system was, and still is, a very sensible fallback, because if computers crash on the air, while you're broadcasting, it stuffs up the programmes.

21:15 - This was simply a re-fit of the 1995-1999 ITN News set. I remember this was where Dermot Murnaghan and Nicholas Owen presented the blanket coverage of the death of Princess Diana in 1997. They just redressed the set with a new desk. Not much there. They could have done better if they had a larger budget.

The original ITN News Channel studio was not fit for purpose. It was perfect for 30 minute bulletins, not for rolling news. One presenter was all they could manage and it was not right. They moved into the ITV national news set in the basement studio in 2002, even that was not good, as that set was designed for set bulletins. It was only in 2004 when they revamped and move into the virtual "Theatre of News" set did the News Channel have a decent studio set design.

It wasn’t available on sufficient platforms.

ITV News Channel suffered poorly due to budget restrictions. From 2004, they simulcast a lot of ITV National News bulletins, as well as repeats from 1.00am-5.30am and 6.00am-7.00am. There was no problems with Sky or Cable, however Freeview platform became much restricted due to the launch of ITV4 were it had to share its channel space from 6.00am-6.00pm ITV News, ITV4 took over from 6.00pm. That was the kiss of death for the channel.

They simply took the 1995-1999 ITN studio based in the newsroom, which was used for the lunchtime, early evening, weekends and morning news and rejigged it to make it into the news channel studio, as ITV News had migrated fully to the basement studio for the March 1999 relaunch.
