Hidden Tunnels Under The Streets Of Liverpool, But Where Do They Go?

  • The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a canal in Northern England, linking the cities of Leeds and Liverpool.
Over a distance of 127 miles (204 km), crossing the Pennines, and including 91 locks on the main line. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal has several small branches, and in the early 21st century a new link was constructed into the Liverpool docks system.
In the mid-18th century the growing towns of Yorkshire, including Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford, were trading increasingly. While the Aire and Calder Navigation improved links to the east for Leeds, links to the west were limited. Bradford merchants wanted to increase the supply of limestone to make lime for mortar and agriculture using coal from Bradford's collieries and to transport textiles to the Port of Liverpool. On the west coast, traders in the busy port of Liverpool wanted a cheap supply of coal for their shipping and manufacturing businesses and to tap the output from the industrial regions of Lancashire. Inspired by the effectiveness of the wholly artificial navigation, the Bridgewater Canal opened in 1759-60. A canal across the Pennines linking Liverpool and Hull (by means of the Aire and Calder Navigation) would have obvious trade benefits.
A public meeting took place at the Sun Inn in Bradford on 2 July 1766 to promote the building of such a canal. John Longbotham was engaged to survey a route. Two groups were set up to promote the scheme, one in Liverpool and one in Bradford. The Liverpool committee was unhappy with the route originally proposed, following the Ribble valley through Preston, considering that it ran too far to the north, missing key towns and the Wigan coalfield. A counter-proposal was produced by John Eyes and Richard Melling, improved by P.P. Burdett, which was rejected by the Bradford committee as too expensive, mainly because of the valley crossing at Burnley. James Brindley was called in to arbitrate, and ruled in favour of Longbotham's more northerly route, though with a branch towards Wigan, a decision which caused some of the Lancashire backers to withdraw their support, and which was subsequently amended over the course of development. In 1768 Brindley gave a detailed estimate of a distance just less than 109 miles (175 km) built at a cost of £259,777 (equivalent to about £32.67 million as of 2014).
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal Act 1770 (10 Geo. 3. c. 114) was passed in May 1770 authorising construction, and Brindley was appointed chief engineer and John Longbotham clerk of works; following Brindley's death in 1772, Longbotham carried out both roles.
in this video we explore what remains of the 1700s construction and even find a pedestrian tunnel all now hidden underground

I’m a Blackburner born and bred and I have always had a fascination with the Leeds/Liverpool canal as it passes right through the heart of the town, just skirting the town centre.
I have walked the towpath from Infirmary locks in Blackburn to as far as Skipton, which was broken up into two separate walks. My intention is to eventually resume the walk from Skipton and finish at Leeds, then restarting at infirmary locks to make my way towards Liverpool. It’s been a few years but I haven’t yet resigned to not doing it.
Thanks for the video, it was really interesting to see the start of the longest canal in Britain, hopefully I will see it for myself soon.

Amazing stuff George, what history we have right on our Doorstep. I started serving my Apprenticeship, just around the corner from the Bridge at Great Howard street end in No3 Glegg street, 1976. Tate & Lyle was still going strong in those days, in fact we used to do the overspill that their Workshops couldn't handle when they were busy. The amount of industry around there in those days was amazing. There were Cafe's all along Great Howard street and during the day they were chocker block with the lads that worked around. Happy Days 👍👍

Great video. I knew about the canal spur but never heard of the two bridges. The concrete work under the Chisenhale Street bridge looks fairly new and must have been done to strengthen the bridge (cast iron looks very nice but it is not that strong). That Burlington Street bridge should still be there as you can still see the parapets. I guess that would have similar strengthening. Normally, if there is any kind of structure, access should be provided for inspection. Then they might just have filled it in with mass concrete.

Iworked in the municipl annex for a few weeks and the joiner who was based there Dave wynn took me in the sub basement where the old boilers where situated. In there there was a tunnel going into dale st then left towards the pier head. his story was these tunnels provided a draught fot the coal boilers to send heat around the building. If you look above the door frames in the building you can see the vents for thr heat. I got to see under most of the buildings including St georges hall where the floors are held up with beams under the foor. Pity there where no smart phones in those days to take photos.

One we went in we went down some stairs and came into an alley that was enclosed all around but open to the sky. The opposite side to were we came in had a row of low arch doorways. They were like little cells. This was around 1963

The warehouse next to the Mercedes Dealership used to belong to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Company, in 2018 I was delivering cars to Mercedes, there was a guy on a JCB with a pecker going at the brickwork that supported a huge decorated wrought iron gate with the L&L logo that bridged over the top, I asked if it was going to a museum, nah said the driver its scrap, and there my friends is a huge waste of Liverpool heritage.
