- Smiths Lake is an ICOLL (Intermittently Closed and Open Lagoon or Lake) which means that the water levels rise and fall in response to rainfall in the catchment.
The management of Smiths Lake is coordinated by the Wallis and Smiths Lakes Estuary Management Committee and brings together agencies such as Council, Marine Parks, National Parks, DPI Fisheries, Professional Fishers Association, Local Professional Fisherman and members of the community.
With such a small catchment area and surrounded by National Park there are a variety of uses to consider in the management such as marine park, recreation, commercial and recreational fisheries, public amenity and private development.
The lake is managed according to an adopted plan and is artificially opened when water levels reach a trigger level that threaten to flood property.
