Chris Do hey man love your stuff, it's very insightful, I only discovered your channel a few days ago and I've been binge watching it hahaha. Please keep this show going if possible because I personally value the time and effort you guys put in for all of this. Cheers.
Another great video! Watching this and hearing you had no live viewers makes me feel weird! That is clearly not the case anymore! You guys are a killer combo! Thanks for sharing your knowledge Jose And Chris
I watch as many of your videos as possible and I am striving to learn as much as possible in order to grow my business to the sky. Your content is incredible and you will get 10 fold of what you give. You are #1 on my list of people I will pay back once I get to where I want. Keep up the excellent work and you will be a legend. You may not have the views you deserve now.... but your spoken word will be online forever... and you will accumulate revenue as your popularity soars. Much respect. Keep Chris Doing it.
Awesome. You guys are correct, strategy is key, we (designers) should all incorporate it into our design process. I see strategy analogous to the foundation of a physical building upon which the brand is then built. Strategy is like the bridge that closes the gap between design and business. To me it's the basic starting point for properly defining, identifying, and solving "business" challenges.Without strategy we're designing in the dark, in my humble opinion. Chris Do said it well, 'strategy elevates designers'. (And it's OK ***** , I get all touchy-feely too). Rocio Villalobos , I appreciate you sharing your insights. Thx!
Thanks for making these videos gentleman! I am an Interior Designer who specializes in branded Foodservice + Hospitality Interiors and I am translating the information you are providing through these videos into my sales processes and overall business practices and positioning. I have a lot of work to do to get my business where I want it to be, but this information is really helping me get clarity. My design process is very strategic, though I didn't realize it until listening to you talk about this concept. Now I know how to communicate this to my clients better and help them understand that I am doing a lot more than making their spaces look amazing.
Even tho there was no audience that day, this info is gold so I'm sure you'll keep crushing it with your content guys, thanks a lot for all the value you guys bring to youtube!
Apparently I have always thought about strategy and applying into my design solutions (whether this was for school, personal, and a couple of real clients) but I had no idea it was called a strategy!! I've found you guys a couple days ago and it feels nice to know that I'm thinking in the right direction and receiving more insights and different perspectives in these matters. Awesome vids
I was doing my own research on branding and getting different perspectives, I saw your little yellow thumbnail on the recommended videos on the right side of the screen and BAM! insta-love. haha I'd like to say that I REALLY liked this episode BECAUSE of the different personality types and different perspectives under the same issue. I think Jose and Chris are a perfect combo because them two alone provide that in every episode. So thanks for that. I like hearing from all perspectives because it opens up mine.
I love to watch all these episodes over and over again and every time I discover something new. Love ya guys. I like the joke "Do you want me to Chris Do it" :)
I really enjoy your videos. Your videos are packed full of helpful information. The insight you gave about designers not understanding the difference between the brief/objective and their design is so true. I was in a graphic design 300 level class where we worked in teams to create a design package to meet the needs of specific clients. When I pointed out that something the teammates wanted to do didn't fit with what the client had asked for they told me "The client isn't a designer, they don't know what they need. That's our job." It kind of rubbed me wrong but I let the majority lead in the group. At the final presentation our instructor hammered us for not meeting the clients needs and said exactly some of the points I had made. It didn't make me feel better because we had still not done well on the project but I did learn to speak up more. A couple semesters later I started working to add a entrepreneurship minor to my degree and found out I would have been a great fit for that program. I remember telling my entrepreneurship instructors that I though taking entrepreneurship classes would be really helpful for all graphic designers. They said it was actually pretty rare because the art personality didn't tend to be comfortable in the business programs. This was back in 2010 and 2011. I will add that was a non-traditional college student, having returned to college in my late 30s after my children entered high school. I was an anomaly in my classes at that time. The thing about this video that is great is that you help me to realize that not only is it ok that I approach design from a strategic place to get my creative energy flowing but it might even be an asset. Thank you for doing these video and sharing them for free.
Kathleen, here's a quote from Dr. Marjorie Kalter "It is no longer sufficient for a campaign to be a big idea that generates awareness. To be successful, it has to be on strategy, trend positively with its target audience, and meet the projected metrics. When the design school approach isn't matched by keen attention to the business goals, the campaign is at risk. The business may also be at risk."
Hello guys ! Thank you so much for this channel ! I am repositioning my company in Morocco, Casablanca as well in strategic global design. Such a useful and compact information. Thank you again for sharing ^^ I love the way you enhance designers work and contribution.
Really liking all your videos guys - they're a huge help! This has inspired me to properly hone strategy for design projects. I had never fully saw it's strength in potential
As a visual learner it would be nice to get a link to some examples of your design strategy. For example in the estimating episode where you showed the example of the bid, that really helped me understand in depth what you were talking about. Thank you!
Thanks for another great video! I would love to see a lean startup approach in the process, where and how the hypothesis, mvp, prototype and different types of quick & dirty testing would come in. Would also love to see methods how to create more fact based user personas - I discovered my clients often don't really know their customers. Often they ask, if they should describe their ideal customers or who they think they are.
Hello guys, I just saw this video (I've been following your podcasts the last few days) and the same question comes to me everytime: Do you make this presentation and facilitation with the client AFTER OR BEFORE bidding and closing a deal with the company??? Thanks and keep the great show up!
How can this never have been answered?! But seriously just include Strategy/Discovery as part of your proposal and explain why it's neat. If they have issues with paying it they will tell you, believe me.
Hey Chris, I like the idea of giving a snippet of strategy. Any suggestions as to what is a good snippet to provide, without giving them too much information that they would just run off and do it themselves?
It's sad that not enough people take strategy seriously. I was looking to hear Chris talk about _The Art of War_ by Sun Tzu, as he strikes me as the type of man who would read that book. I remember not knowing what the difference between strategy and tactics are. After looking up the etymology for both words I found that: *Strategy literally means, 'to lead'* *Tactics literally means, 'arrangement'* Therefore strategizing leads to victory while the arrangement of a business helps it to be prepared for the unexpected.
*The Futur* As I've been watching you talk about and illustrate the impact that design and logos have on businesses, I was reminded of a line in _The Art of War_ : *"Flags and banners unite the eyes of the army..."* This is true even today when logo designs unite the eyes of the public to a business. Your videos have brought me one step closer to selling strategy and tactics.
*The Futur* Since you value strategy so much, I'd like to recommend a precious and rare writing from one of the students of Sun Tzu: _The Way of the General_ -Zhuge Liang kongming.net/novel/writings/wotg/2.php In ancient times he was known as the Sleeping Dragon among the public but, his close circle knew him as Kongming. He grew up during the three kingdoms era in China.
Mr. Exrovert is such a Distraction @3:06 He thinks that he deserves to take a fancy water break while the other guy gets schooled by the lady; assuming that he simply-clearly 'get it'. His character reflects the image of a Wise Guy. Notice how he rudely reached for the water/wine-shape bottle & pops the top, causing a burst of 'pop & pouring' noise into the microphone while she was talking, trying to get her point across. Then he jumps ahead @ 5:26 No disrespect to anyone, I just had to point that out. But still, this is an awesome video, thanks for sharing!
Was pitching Strategy to a client and they asked me to show the ROI of what I was offering and it stumped me. What’s a good response to clients when they ask us to show the ROI of our strategy packages?
ask them how they will measure success. what are the KPIs? then ask, how much they want to invest towards hitting that goal and then negotiate based on risk factor.
Have you guys seen the show The Pitch on the AMC channel. The process of the 'close' seems terrifying. Is it true to reality? It is on tv so I choose not to believe everything I see.
Michael Jefferson Yes. We're fans of #ThePitch and it's true to life as awful as it seems. Of course things are edited for drama, but it's based on reality.
Yeah I know hahaha, seriously this is the best channel I have seen about this, your way of thinking and developing this channel is ashtoning. The Futur brand has bonded with my heart
Brand Lift Always appreciate you tuning in as diehard audience member and for providing feedback. We'll keep doing the show if you keep watching.

Things have changed.

Hi from Santa Monica. Good luck with positioning yourself as strategic design firm.
Really liking all your videos guys - they're a huge help! This has inspired me to properly hone strategy for design projects. I had never fully saw it's strength in potential
+Chris Casey Glad you see the light as so many of us have.
As a visual learner it would be nice to get a link to some examples of your design strategy. For example in the estimating episode where you showed the example of the bid, that really helped me understand in depth what you were talking about. Thank you!
I think Rocio knows what she’s trying to say, Jose.
Great show I cant miss one episode

another stellar video full of knowledge!
+TheSupamario11 yes!
+TheSupamario11 Mario, wanted to reply to your video question. You didn't ask a specific enough question. Tell us again what you want to know.

give them a lot of value. don't be afraid. you have better ideas.
Why don't you guys advertise the date and time of the next show in the video?
Love this!

good quote.
Great stuff!! Mahalo!!
I think I'm signing up nxt month in the pro group, I need to learn more about this not even for clients first but for myself
see you on the other side Chris.
done
Great show once again...it was too short though...!
***** Ha! We get conflicting feedback. Too long. Too short. Feeling a little like #Goldilocks
For me I like the 30-40 minute max format. In this particular episode though I was just being greedy and wanted more. It was great the way you did it.
Mr. Exrovert is such a Distraction @3:06 He thinks that he deserves to take a fancy water break while the other guy gets schooled by the lady; assuming that he simply-clearly 'get it'. appreciate the precise and play by play analysis.

SENPAI creative agency you are awesome for saying that.

You guys have come such a long way lol
Kane San Miguel yes we have.
Yeah I appreciate Chris a lot more now than in 2012-2014, I was a Jose fan for the longest time :p
The passive aggressiveness of Chris with Jose is so awkward. But I get it they do not work well together.
Love the videos , but a lot of ego in some of the videos
If you disagree that ego isn't a way to frame what your saying, than why do you say " That's a way to frame it" Thumbs down.
can you include the time stamp? that way i can rewatch. this is almost 3 years old.
Stop yelling
OK. NO MORE YELLING.
Rohit are you Amit's little bro?
