  • The Funan Techo canal project is attracting a lot of attention from academics and international media. The 180km long canal will help connect the capital Phnom Penh with Cambodia's ports on the Gulf of Thailand. Funan Techo canal is a major project with many important impacts on Vietnam. A thorough assessment of the potential impacts and close cooperation with Cambodia are essential to ensure the project brings maximum benefits to both countries. In addition, Vietnam also needs to continue to promote environmental protection measures in the Mekong Delta, respond to climate change and ensure water security to adapt to the changes brought by this project.

Cambodia's development within its own borders is a sovereign right and should not require justification to other nations. Vietnam's concerns about the Funan Canal likely stem from potential shifts in regional trade dynamics once the canal becomes operational.

Vietnam want to continue to control Cambodia through waterway. Let me tell you, Viet illegal immigrants continue to travel to Cambodia through waterway everyday and ending up on Tonle Sap.

The OC-EO canal of Funan (Phnom) Kingdom of Cambodia has been already existing since the first century throughout the OC-EO seaport in Kampuchea Krom (South Vietnam)

Vietnam invaded and occupied Champa, Kampuchea Krom (South Vietnam) of Cambodia and the Sihanouk trail that helped transporting food, medical and war equipment from Cambodia to the Viet soldiers hiding along the border fighting against the US during the Vietnam war, Vietnam never complained.

China does not and has never invaded or started any war with any country unless being invaded, and does not need Cambodia port to "invade" Vietnam.

I'd have like to see Cambodia fund the canal project themselves. But that would be unlikely. And let's be clear, the Vietnamese government isn't going to foot the bill; they were happy to charge Cambodia for using their waterways. The Vietnamese government is looking out only for their interest, NOT DOUBT. It was sort of a monopoly, no choice for Cambodia really. So, Cambodia have been dependent on the Vietnamese waterways up to this point. Remember, the canal is in Cambodia territory, not like it's in the Vietnamese territory. Cambodia too has the right to lookout for their interest. The canal will benefit Cambodia's development. But...

All Vietnam interest and exploitation over Cambodia will be gone with the operation of this new canal.
It’ll also keep Vietnam in check. Among other countries like japan, and South Korea,China had built bridges and highways etc for Cambodia. China also built state-of the- art railroad for Laos. It’s a win-win situation for all. Make love not war.

China involvements in building infrastructure around the world are simply a strategy to make friends it's a win, win situation and most importantly to improve China rise on the world stage with the U.S. the China Cambodia Funan canal is to facilitate the export of Cambodian products and is not a threat to vietnam. not to mention China building a railway north and south connecting hanoi and ho chi minh. learn the Chinese chess and you understand the logic.

When the Vietnamese built a Canal or illegally invaded the Mekong Delta in Cambodia through immigration, the Vietnamese didn't say a single thing.
When Cambodia helped Vietnam against China and we lost our land to the hypocritical Vietnamese king, there was no even a thank you, on top of that the Vietnamese even dared to steal our land.
When Cambodia helped Vietnam to unite against the French and North, South Vietnam, there wasn't even a thank you.
When Vietnam created the Khmer rouge and killed million of Cambodians, invaded Cambodia, and stayed for 10 years in the name of a false savior who was actually an oppressor, the Vietnamese wanted Cambodia to say thank you.

Actually whatever Cambodia has been doing since the French left in 1954, has no effect on Vietnam's overall interests in Indochina. The only time that Khmer did something that affect vietnam profoundly was the successful war to get vietnamese occupation troop out of Cambodia from 1979 to 1989. Other than that no absolutely not, not even the war of 1970 to 1975 to keep vietnam/china communist out of Cambodia that saw millions of Cambodian died. Or the successful Geneva peace accord in 1991 that paved the way for the election in 1993 that Khmer voted overwhelmingly to get the vietnamese puppet regime out of Cambodia. The 1991 peace accord and the election of legitimate government by the people of Cambodia did nothing to prevent vietnamese invasion to overthrow the Ranarith's government in 1997.
So what is this canal that vietnam(nobody else care) so bent out of shape? in short and in reality, it is a win-win for Hun Sen who seeks to assert himself as the defender of Cambodia sovereignty and independence from vietnam, in the eyes of Khmer. In reality, by doing this, hun sen paid vietnam dearly in land concession, in the tune of thousands of hectors in mondol kiri, ratanak kiri etc..and thousands of vietnamese immigrants come to Cambodia unchecked and untouched.
At all levels hun sen's regime, there are vietnamese "advisors" to steer hun sen in the right direction, to ensure that hun sen does not and will not become another pol pot or Lon Nol.
The who is going to build the canal? Well, none other than the Vietnam's codefendant of the brutal regime from 1975 to 1979, china. China and vietnam has been working hand in hand to make sure that Cambodia is where she is since the French left in 1954. From supporting the creation of Indochinese Communist Party in 1932 by Ho Chi Minh to the war with American in vietnam to the invasion of Cambodia in 1970 to the destruction of Cambodia that paved the way for vietnamese invasion of 1979.
So to build or not build is not up to hun sen, BUT up to the vietnamese and chinese. It is what the viet and the chinese negotiation on the final term and condition that will determine if the canal will be built or not. For hun sen, he is looking for short term gain, before he dies, as hero. For vietnam, it is about national interest that lies in the canal that directly at another flash point Koh Trail(or Phu Quoc in vietnam). In short Vietnam might want to claim westside of the canal as theirs, just like Mekong, based on 10 knautical miles from phu quoc. And for china, the question is will they be allowed to own the canal and the shipping lane and whatever the canal would offer. because as the history vietnam and china go with regard to Cambodia, vietnam has always outsmarted outplayed and outmaneuver China in every field, regional or geopolitical or militarily, every time.
The bottom line: hun sen will get his delusional heroic wish before he dies. china will get disappointed just like with pol pot. And vietnam will get everything and the whole of Cambodia, if they can rally Khmer to fight chinese, just like in 1979.

Hard to stop Cambodia as they have their right to build this canel and it do benefits them in long run. Most of asean know cambodia is the pet of China. The right to do now is plan for alternative driver to grow the economy to counter the drop of shipping business...No hard feeling as everyone do have their intention and interest . Find a way to collobrate and work with Cambodia...Since when many country has not sacrificed environment for human or economic growth. Mekong river fishing issue have been problem for years and now vietnam talk about this will not help in this matter at all .

Yes. Vietnam perceived it as advantageous to align herself with the self-interested War-monger United States of America, Vietnam's ex-enemy to consistently engage in bullying and exploitation of a friendly neighbour Cambodia.
Additionally, Vietnam has aligned with the United States of America, giving rise to a misrepresented eco-friendly environment that adversely affects the Mekong rivers. There is a growing spotlight on the unjust, unethical, self-serving, and corrupt activities of non-governmental organizations and environmental conservation bodies in this context.
It is essential to question whether the Vietnamese have thoroughly evaluated the ramifications of their actions and whether their engagement in disparaging others through RUclips content aligns with their self-perception as benevolent and considerate neighbours.

It's a disaster in Vietnamese city I need the US to stop it as soon as possible in 2028 the disaster will start if Cambodia finishes building the funen canal in the entire delta and submerges it in water then the damage will be minimal.
