Couldn't agree more about Petty. He was a treasure, and will be missed forever. I'm a much bigger fan of his 70s material, but even this song still evokes good memories for me, where most 80s music does the opposite. Petty has always been a favorite, and his music will live forever.
If you get the Movie, FM, you get to see Tom and several more 70s greats as they were before they got old. It's a fun movie and Shines a light on the craziness that went on in Radio stations around the nation!

Here’s another to add to the legend…in the mid 80’s we had a great Album Oriented Rock station in the Raleigh area WRDU 106.1….they were the first station (that I heard) that had a morning talk show type format that had a mixture of stories like this, music, and funny stuff. One of the stories the female DJ related was an interview she did w Nicks at a station in Cincinnati. Stevie comes in to do the show and then disappears w her strap hangers. The DJ is waiting as they were doing this live. Stevie is taking forever, so someone goes and tries to find her. As the person walks in there is Stevie, dress hiked over her rear end, one of the assistants w a straw, blowing cocaine up her arse! Rock&Roll Baby! This was relayed over the air on the morning drive! I was in tears. I tend to believe it, especially after hearing other stories about her.

Best concert I ever went to was Tom Petty.....around the year 2000 if I recall. being in my 30's at the time, I thought I would be one of the youngest fans there. Man was I wrong. In fact, I kinda felt old! It was amazing to me how diverse the audience was, including many fans who appeared to be in their teens. At first, I thought maybe these were teenagers who came with their parents. It didn't take long to realize they were there because they loved petty! They knew all the songs, and sang along with the same enthusiasm as us guys in our 30's, and a lot of people in their 60's and 70's too. Point is, Petty is timeless. I enjoyed the show so much, I booked to see him again two weeks later. Then again two weeks after that. That's the only act I ever saw more than once in the same year. It was magical!

Tom Petty sang about what a lot of young men were feeling at the time. He was strong and vulnerable at the same time. We all aspired to be more like him.
I can't either. I was 15 in 1985 when this album came out. I never paid attention to Petty before that, I was into the Police and The Cars. After seeing this video on MTV I was hooked and went back and bought all his previous albums, and he remains my all time favorite artist today. This album being my favorite because it was my first real introduction to him.
I am sure I said it before but it definately deserves to be said again. Subscribing to this channel on RUclips has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Great story. Dave Stewart remains a brilliant songwriter. His work with Eurythmics is some of the best music in pop history. Of course, how could it not be -- Annie Lennox, after all! But Dave's friendship with Tom Petty produced a lot of great music, most spectacularly, 'Don't Come Around Here No More'. Great production on this story. Thanks for sharing it with us all. I remember when Annie Lennox appeared in the video for “put a Little love in your heart.“ She was smiling, ear to ear, and I remember people commenting gosh what ever came over Annie Lennox? It seems I was the only one who realized she had her teeth done.
In 1985 I went to Basic Training in the Army. During basic, you essentially have no access to music. On the day we were granted “ freedom”, I bought a small radio tape player ( like a Walkman) and put on the head phones. This was the first song I heard played. And what a song it was. This will always be a special song to me.
As I recall, a “revenge of Alice” sequel video was made for Southern Accents track “Make It Better (Forget About Me)”, in which Alice tortures the Hatter. Walsh must have “come around there some more,” because he worked with Stevie on his 1985 album, The Confessor. And Stevie herself took a turn with the Alice thematics when she put out The Other Side of the Mirror, in 1987.
What a story and what a song! Don't Come Around Here feels completely different from any song before or since. I remember being mesmerized by that video when I was a kid. Such a great and timeless song and the back story adds so much to it. Tom Petty, Dave Stewart and Stevie Nicks...so much talent involved in making that song. A top 3 favorite concert experience for me was seeing Tom in the early 2000’s. He opened the lid to the big trunk with a bright light shining out of it and removed the top hot as the sitar began to play the opening riff.. It was perfect. Thanks for the story behind the song.

I love this song and it’s one of my all time favourite videos. I remember seeing the video in a mall in Orlando. I hadn’t seen it for ages. Had to stop to watch it while my family carried on. Took me twenty minutes to find them Stevie’s song Hard Advice is about the same story, advice Tom gave her.
Got to see him live, it truly was mesmerizing to say the least. I usually don't like it when bands playing live go into long Jams changing the songs but Petty was different. It was always even better live. A great talent lost to soon indeed.

I had remembered hearing there was some drama involved. I didn't realize it was Stevie Nicks who coined the line. The whole melodrama that played out is both humorous and disheartening. It's hard to imagine the song as anything other than Tom Petty, but some form of collaboration with Nicks on it would have been interesting. There is a wonder at how connected artists are, but it is often easy to forget they are human, as well. Stories like this remind us that jealousy, ambition, and dislike are all stopped up inside them along with all the talent, passion, and skill. Thank you for the story. Keep doing what you do, Prof.
What gets me is the video for this song was so iconic, lost in that is the fact that this song is so great. I love the song. Forget about the video. The song is an absolutely fantastic rock song. And I love this story professor. How you find these things out I'll never know. 😊
I've always found the video a total distraction from the song. Partly because it's such a riveting work of art in its own right. I've come to dislike the video ; much prefer to just listen to this phenomenal song! I was at the Hyde Park, London concert just months before Tom died. Despite being in my late 50s I'd never been to a large-scale rock concert before, but followed a strong calling to be there. One factor was my declining sight, knowing I might not be able to enjoy these things so much in futures; but it turned out the greater urgency was that it was the last chance any of us in Britain would get to see him. Thanks for the call, Tom.

Tom Petty is my brother-in-law’s favourite performer. He saw him many times and now has hired a Tom Petty tribute band twice over two summers at his cottage. Covid has put a damper on it but when that’s over he’ll have it again. I remember listening to this song as a teenager; great memories. Fantastic storytelling. You have a new subscriber. Tom was never the greatest vocalist, but his song writing and music writing was top notch. Actually I took quite awhile for me to learn to tolerate Neal Young's voice but his song writing could cover a much worse voice.

And, interestingly and serendipitously enough: Stevie Nicks' 4th solo album, The Other Side Of The Mirror (1989), was inspired by this song and period in the lives of all concerned. Though, supposedly, Stevie and Joe were involved from Summer 1983 to Spring 1985 (w/ Stevie firing Jimmy in late 1984). Also, serendipitous: When Stevie's 3rd solo LP, Rock A Little, was released, in Fall 1985, Stevie decided to personally give Joe Walsh an acetate recording of the album that was partly-inspired/musically-fueled by their relationship...upon telling her constant backing duo/Friends, Lori and Sharon, of her plan to drive through Los Angeles to visit her failed suitor, Sharon looked doubtfully at Stevie, and said: "Isn't that a long way to go, to say goodbye? I thought you already did that?"...which led to the rocker song/single, also from TOSOTM: "Long Way To Go", and the famous chorus: "Well, it's a real long way to go, to say goodbye, I thought we already did that?, Have fun...tell the world..." P.S. When Stevie handed Joe the acetate, it was outside his home, and he just took it rather nonchalantly. Stevie turned, left, and as she walked back to her car, looked back and said, "Well, have fun...tell the world..." I'm STILL surprised that "Long Way To Go" and the semi-title track, "Alice" weren't giant radio and commercial '80s hits. Great story, Adam...as always.
Stevie and Joe were only hooking up during the Wild Heart tour. Joe got in trouble for calling her a road F***. They remained friends after their relationship and in the late 80s she would even visit Joe at his house and insisted on meeting his new girlfriend.
Huge fan of Tom Petty's music. I think he's one of the most under-appreciated rockers of the 80s and 90s. The three music videos I can remember clearly from when I was younger are 1) the Dire Straits music video with the occasional dips into animation, 2) Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love" mini-movie, and Tom Petty's Alice in Wonderland Video--didn't realize there had been a version where he swallows the girl though! Many songs of the 80's are connected to the music video for me because I was an avid watcher of MTV. I was a teenager in the 80's and MTV was one my resource for discovering many varieties of music. 😁

When this song came out, I always thought it was very different for Tom Petty but I think it actually made me like him more. Hi Adam, another very enjoyable episode. I'm a rabid Tom Petty fan. I love Stevie, she was one of my teenage crushes in the 70s. Love Joe Walsh and Jimmy Iovine's brilliant career. Dave is another creative genius I love. I knew some of the relationships but never heard this particular story. Those crazy coke-filled days in the rock world! I was lucky enough to see Tom and the Heartbreakers about 20 times through the years including his 2018 tour with Mudcrutch at House of Blues in Boston. I miss that man.
Tom Petty at Bonnaroo 2013 was one of the best shows I have ever seen. 95000 people in a field, in the rain and everyone singing everyone of his songs ,word for word.......it was amazing.

Tom repeatedly denied having a sexual relationship with Stevie and I have no reason to doubt him as in his authorized bio (Warren Zane) he was totally candid about everything else. But they were lifelong friends. She was sleeping with Iovine while Tom was writing for her and Iovine was producing the Heartbreakers and she used to hide in Iovine's bedroom by her own admission to eavesdrop on their conversations about the album Tom was making -- stuff like that did happen. She also tried to dissuade him from getting together with Dana his second wife who pretty much saved his life, but I'm sure it was coming from a good place as she was sober by then.

I wanted to also add my story behind one of my original songs inspired by the great TOM PETTY🥰 About 11 yrs ago, I was listening to his song either it was “Running down a dream” or “I won’t back down” I can’t remember which one.. I felt somehow lead to write a Petty styled rock song.. I came up with an opening chord progression of the verse part using the guitar chords E, D, A, AsusA. before I wrote the lyrics.. a couple months later I collaborated with my bandmember Grafton Tanner, and together we came up with rest of the song. We titled it “The Long Road” my song. A year after we composed it we tracked it at a local studio.. in Macon Ga. released it in 2014, as a single release to iTunes etc.. but if you listen to my song T.L.R. You can hear that classic Tom Petty style to it.. I can lastly add that I have my very own ode to the legend himself Mr. Tom Petty..

It does sound like Stevie doing background vocals. I love Stevie being involved in this. It is so in character for her and I love her for that lol. She and Prince were really close too. Idk if a physical relationship but I'd be surprised if they didnt have one knowing both of them. David Stewart is awesome. He's a great songwriter and an underappreciated guitarist. His 1990 collaboration with sax player Candy Dulfer on the song "Lily Was Here" is worth listening to.
Dave says it and everybody seems to repeat it and it's true he had the 1st lynch pin line and a partial demo for Stevie, whom Petty was trying to get rid of since his own writing commitments for Southern Accents were overwhelming, and he was more than happy that Stewart write for her (Source: Tom Petty bio by Warren Zane) but Petty wasn't just singing on the track he was writing lyrics too so collaboration ok, but I suspect ol' Dave was taking a bit too much credit. Also in the Rock Doc Runnin Down a Dream Stan Lynch makes it very clear that the presence of Dave Stewart and Stevie's entourage during that time was not the Heartbreakers' style, the drugs were seriously messing with everybody's heads and they couldn't get rid of the people. But yes, awesome song and the video was great.
Kudos to Stewart for starting the song and for keeping his composure around the bevy of Nick’s companions. Perry played it well, and yes with the sitar. Why can’t music be like that today?
I instantly thought of the video for "Don't Come Around Here No More" when I saw the mention of the '80s and Alice in Wonderland without knowing what the song was until I watched the POR post. Definitely an underrated Petty classic. Another one that comes to mind is "Jammin' Me" from 1987's Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) Heartbreakers album with its name-dropping of '80s celebs.
I loved that song when it was new and I was 17, and I still listen to it whenever it comes on in the car. I never knew the Stevie Nicks or Dave Stewart connection. And as for Stevie Nicks, I'm beginning to think that she engaged in pre-failed relationships so she would have material to write new songs with, since it seems that happened a lot with her. Was she the original heart breaker that Tom Petty's band was named after?

Damn. I already loved Tom Petty but knowing he broke his hand and had surgery makes me love him that much more. I broke my hand a few years ago and had to have 2 plates and ten screws put in. It wasn't that painful when I broke it. I was under the influence of alcohol among other things and it just felt pretty numb, but when I woke up from surgery it was one of the most painful feelings in my life. I just remember feeling like I woke up in hell.
There's also a romantic epilogue to this story that you've missed. Stan Lynch, responsible for the superb drumming on this track started a 5 year relationship with Louise Foley, the actress in the video after meeting her on the video shoot.
Tom Petty was awesome! He had a gift from God with his musical talents! He will truly be missed! He produced wonderful music that will be played for a very very long time! God bless him! 🙏
I read a book written by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and they said of all the rockers they ever met or hung with, the craziest, hardest partying, etc. was Stevie Nicks, hands down. What a life!

Great story. Dave Stewart remains a brilliant songwriter. His work with Eurythmics is some of the best music in pop history. Of course, how could it not be -- Annie Lennox, after all! But Dave's friendship with Tom Petty produced a lot of great music, most spectacularly, 'Don't Come Around Here No More'. Great production on this story. Thanks for sharing it with us all. I remember when Annie Lennox appeared in the video for “put a Little love in your heart.“ She was smiling, ear to ear, and I remember people commenting gosh what ever came over Annie Lennox? It seems I was the only one who realized she had her teeth done.
In 1985 I went to Basic Training in the Army. During basic, you essentially have no access to music.
On the day we were granted “ freedom”, I bought a small radio tape player ( like a Walkman) and put on the head phones. This was the first song I heard played. And what a song it was. This will always be a special song to me.
As I recall, a “revenge of Alice” sequel video was made for Southern Accents track “Make It Better (Forget About Me)”, in which Alice tortures the Hatter. Walsh must have “come around there some more,” because he worked with Stevie on his 1985 album, The Confessor. And Stevie herself took a turn with the Alice thematics when she put out The Other Side of the Mirror, in 1987.
One of my first favorite songs when I was a kid. Played it over and over. Tom Petty was a genius that is sorely missed.
What a story and what a song! Don't Come Around Here feels completely different from any song before or since. I remember being mesmerized by that video when I was a kid. Such a great and timeless song and the back story adds so much to it. Tom Petty, Dave Stewart and Stevie Nicks...so much talent involved in making that song. A top 3 favorite concert experience for me was seeing Tom in the early 2000’s. He opened the lid to the big trunk with a bright light shining out of it and removed the top hot as the sitar began to play the opening riff.. It was perfect. Thanks for the story behind the song.

I love this song and it’s one of my all time favourite videos. I remember seeing the video in a mall in Orlando. I hadn’t seen it for ages. Had to stop to watch it while my family carried on. Took me twenty minutes to find them

One of my all time favorite songs . Stevie Nicks seemed to be on a road of self destruction through the 80s . Amazingly she didn’t end up an obituary.
Got to see him live, it truly was mesmerizing to say the least. I usually don't like it when bands playing live go into long Jams changing the songs but Petty was different. It was always even better live. A great talent lost to soon indeed.

I had remembered hearing there was some drama involved. I didn't realize it was Stevie Nicks who coined the line. The whole melodrama that played out is both humorous and disheartening. It's hard to imagine the song as anything other than Tom Petty, but some form of collaboration with Nicks on it would have been interesting. There is a wonder at how connected artists are, but it is often easy to forget they are human, as well. Stories like this remind us that jealousy, ambition, and dislike are all stopped up inside them along with all the talent, passion, and skill.

What gets me is the video for this song was so iconic, lost in that is the fact that this song is so great. I love the song. Forget about the video. The song is an absolutely fantastic rock song. And I love this story professor. How you find these things out I'll never know. 😊

I've always found the video a total distraction from the song. Partly because it's such a riveting work of art in its own right. I've come to dislike the video ; much prefer to just listen to this phenomenal song!
I was at the Hyde Park, London concert just months before Tom died. Despite being in my late 50s I'd never been to a large-scale rock concert before, but followed a strong calling to be there. One factor was my declining sight, knowing I might not be able to enjoy these things so much in futures; but it turned out the greater urgency was that it was the last chance any of us in Britain would get to see him. Thanks for the call, Tom.

Tom Petty is my brother-in-law’s favourite performer. He saw him many times and now has hired a Tom Petty tribute band twice over two summers at his cottage. Covid has put a damper on it but when that’s over he’ll have it again. I remember listening to this song as a teenager; great memories. Fantastic storytelling. You have a new subscriber. I love music from the ‘80s.
I always figured that Nicks slept around but this is pure gold.
I used to think Tom Petty was a so-so singer, but when he died and there were tributes to the breadth of his work... I realized I was VERY wrong.
Tom was never the greatest vocalist, but his song writing and music writing was top notch.
Actually I took quite awhile for me to learn to tolerate Neal Young's voice but his song writing could cover a much worse voice.

Tom Petty is and will always be the music i can not live without. This song was, as a kid, the song that put me onto Tom and feel everything from his voice. Pure genius and forever treasure!
And, interestingly and serendipitously enough: Stevie Nicks' 4th solo album, The Other Side Of The Mirror (1989), was inspired by this song and period in the lives of all concerned. Though, supposedly, Stevie and Joe were involved from Summer 1983 to Spring 1985 (w/ Stevie firing Jimmy in late 1984). Also, serendipitous: When Stevie's 3rd solo LP, Rock A Little, was released, in Fall 1985, Stevie decided to personally give Joe Walsh an acetate recording of the album that was partly-inspired/musically-fueled by their relationship...upon telling her constant backing duo/Friends, Lori and Sharon, of her plan to drive through Los Angeles to visit her failed suitor, Sharon looked doubtfully at Stevie, and said: "Isn't that a long way to go, to say goodbye? I thought you already did that?"...which led to the rocker song/single, also from TOSOTM: "Long Way To Go", and the famous chorus:
"Well, it's a real long way to go, to say goodbye,
I thought we already did that?,
Have fun...tell the world..."
P.S. When Stevie handed Joe the acetate, it was outside his home, and he just took it rather nonchalantly. Stevie turned, left, and as she walked back to her car, looked back and said, "Well, have fun...tell the world..."
I'm STILL surprised that "Long Way To Go" and the semi-title track, "Alice" weren't giant radio and commercial '80s hits.

Stevie and Joe were only hooking up during the Wild Heart tour. Joe got in trouble for calling her a road F***. They remained friends after their relationship and in the late 80s she would even visit Joe at his house and insisted on meeting his new girlfriend.

Huge fan of Tom Petty's music. I think he's one of the most under-appreciated rockers of the 80s and 90s. The three music videos I can remember clearly from when I was younger are 1) the Dire Straits music video with the occasional dips into animation, 2) Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love" mini-movie, and Tom Petty's Alice in Wonderland Video--didn't realize there had been a version where he swallows the girl though! Good stuff--thanks for another great video!

That was a great story! I love learning the backstory to songs or just about anything music related! The video definitely sticks out in my memory!! Many songs of the 80's are connected to the music video for me because I was an avid watcher of MTV. I was a teenager in the 80's and MTV was one my resource for discovering many varieties of music. 😁
I have always loved both Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty (their music), so this story is so cool to hear. When this song came out, I always thought it was very different for Tom Petty but I think it actually made me like him more. I always looked for the artists that I liked to surprise me a bit and he did that for sure. Thanks for telling the story.

Hi Adam, another very enjoyable episode. I'm a rabid Tom Petty fan. I love Stevie, she was one of my teenage crushes in the 70s. Love Joe Walsh and Jimmy Iovine's brilliant career. Dave is another creative genius I love. I knew some of the relationships but never heard this particular story. Those crazy coke-filled days in the rock world! I was lucky enough to see Tom and the Heartbreakers about 20 times through the years including his 2018 tour with Mudcrutch at House of Blues in Boston. I miss that man.
Tom Petty at Bonnaroo 2013 was one of the best shows I have ever seen. 95000 people in a field, in the rain and everyone singing everyone of his songs ,word for word.......it was amazing.

Tom repeatedly denied having a sexual relationship with Stevie and I have no reason to doubt him as in his authorized bio (Warren Zane) he was totally candid about everything else. But they were lifelong friends. She was sleeping with Iovine while Tom was writing for her and Iovine was producing the Heartbreakers and she used to hide in Iovine's bedroom by her own admission to eavesdrop on their conversations about the album Tom was making -- stuff like that did happen. She also tried to dissuade him from getting together with Dana his second wife who pretty much saved his life, but I'm sure it was coming from a good place as she was sober by then.
*Correction:* The song features electric sitar, not an actual sitar. Electric sitar is just an electric guitar with a flat bridge which makes the strings buzz.

Great story. I love how artists tend to appreciate each other (unlike many fans who can only like specific artists/genres while denigrating others).
I wanted to also add my story behind one of my original songs inspired by the great TOM PETTY🥰 About 11 yrs ago, I was listening to his song either it was “Running down a dream” or “I won’t back down” I can’t remember which one.. I felt somehow lead to write a Petty styled rock song.. I came up with an opening chord progression of the verse part using the guitar chords E, D, A, AsusA. before I wrote the lyrics.. a couple months later I collaborated with my bandmember Grafton Tanner, and together we came up with rest of the song. We titled it “The Long Road” my song. A year after we composed it we tracked it at a local studio.. in Macon Ga. released it in 2014, as a single release to iTunes etc.. but if you listen to my song T.L.R. You can hear that classic Tom Petty style to it.. I can lastly add that I have my very own ode to the legend himself Mr. Tom Petty..

David Stewart is awesome. He's a great songwriter and an underappreciated guitarist. His 1990 collaboration with sax player Candy Dulfer on the song "Lily Was Here" is worth listening to.
Dave says it and everybody seems to repeat it and it's true he had the 1st lynch pin line and a partial demo for Stevie, whom Petty was trying to get rid of since his own writing commitments for Southern Accents were overwhelming, and he was more than happy that Stewart write for her (Source: Tom Petty bio by Warren Zane) but Petty wasn't just singing on the track he was writing lyrics too so collaboration ok, but I suspect ol' Dave was taking a bit too much credit. Also in the Rock Doc Runnin Down a Dream Stan Lynch makes it very clear that the presence of Dave Stewart and Stevie's entourage during that time was not the Heartbreakers' style, the drugs were seriously messing with everybody's heads and they couldn't get rid of the people. But yes, awesome song and the video was great.
Stevie actually sang backup for Tom Petty on his 2006 tour, including on this song. What I wouldn’t give to have her cover this in a studio setting.
Kudos to Stewart for starting the song and for keeping his composure around the bevy of Nick’s companions. Perry played it well, and yes with the sitar. Why can’t music be like that today?
I instantly thought of the video for "Don't Come Around Here No More" when I saw the mention of the '80s and Alice in Wonderland without knowing what the song was until I watched the POR post. Definitely an underrated Petty classic. Another one that comes to mind is "Jammin' Me" from 1987's Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) Heartbreakers album with its name-dropping of '80s celebs.

I really miss the 80s.. so many reasons
I loved that song when it was new and I was 17, and I still listen to it whenever it comes on in the car. I never knew the Stevie Nicks or Dave Stewart connection. And as for Stevie Nicks, I'm beginning to think that she engaged in pre-failed relationships so she would have material to write new songs with, since it seems that happened a lot with her. Was she the original heart breaker that Tom Petty's band was named after?

Damn. I already loved Tom Petty but knowing he broke his hand and had surgery makes me love him that much more. I broke my hand a few years ago and had to have 2 plates and ten screws put in. It wasn't that painful when I broke it. I was under the influence of alcohol among other things and it just felt pretty numb, but when I woke up from surgery it was one of the most painful feelings in my life. I just remember feeling like I woke up in hell.
There's also a romantic epilogue to this story that you've missed. Stan Lynch, responsible for the superb drumming on this track started a 5 year relationship with Louise Foley, the actress in the video after meeting her on the video shoot.

I read a book written by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and they said of all the rockers they ever met or hung with, the craziest, hardest partying, etc. was Stevie Nicks, hands down. What a life!
