    Joshua is enjoying life.
    Freezing at three in the morning is not fun, but I have shivered myself awake at sunrise and found the first rays of the Sun, while the frost glistened on the fields and the ice melted off the roof.

    I enjoy my Warbonnet hammock and Super Fly tarp setup. I still have to get the under quilt and under quilt protector though. Was worth the money back then and they're a little cheaper now. I've adopted your philosophy of, "buy once, cry once."

    I never heard of a pad being a necessity if you have an underquilt.

    • @sigma3survivalschool
      @sigma3survivalschool  2 года назад +1

      Makes it WAY warmer. Keeps heat closer to the skin and you don’t have to heat the space gap above the quilt.

    • @mrx702
      @mrx702 2 года назад +1

      Surely with the right temperature underquilt a pad shouldn't be necessary. If that's the case might as well skip the underquilt altogether or at best just get a very cheap underquilt rather than the expensive down ones.

    • @sigma3survivalschool
      @sigma3survivalschool  2 года назад

      @@mrx702 if you want to sleep in below zero temps in a hammock you need both. No matter how good your quilt is. I have one of the best down under quilts you can get. But they are prone to moving in the night and cause cold spots which the pad fixes. No getting around it really.

    Are you sure that you really need the therma rest pad between but and under quilt? It makes hammocking in winter excessive. If you have to choose between a pad, under quilt, under quilt protection, sleeping bag, tarp vs tent, pad and sleeping bag, the second option seems more reasonable.
    Thanks!

      With a properly adjusted and temperature rated underquilt, you absolutely don't need the pad. Having a pad between you and the underquilt doesn't let your body heat get trapped into the down and makes it colder for you.
      Warnonnet makes quilts that don't need any adjustment. Having a quilt and no pad is also much more comfortable. I've camped with my setup in negative 45 degrees with windchill. Blackbird xlc hammock, superfly tarp, and negative 20 quilt. I now have the warnonnet hammock sock which is a complete wind break, top cover, and keeps inside of it about 20 degrees warmer.

    I have a hot tent and stove but I’m trying to get lighter set up for staying up in mountains after skiing all day. What do you think about the hammock sleeping bags. Im interested in a 0 degree goose down sleeping bag and plan to stay above 20 degrees when using.

    You would think they would make a large version of the tarp so you could touch the tarp to the ground like this but also not have to crouch inside

    • @sigma3survivalschool
      @sigma3survivalschool  3 года назад

      The tarp is huge. It’s 12’ long. Just the way I have it setup it’s sucked all the way to the ground. Typically in warmer conditions I’d have it well above the hammock so that I can see out and enjoy the view. It’s plenty big for the needs of the hammock in most conditions

    • @Akkfbdui384hj
      @Akkfbdui384hj 3 года назад

      @@sigma3survivalschool yes I agree the length is perfect. All I’m saying is if it was wider, you would be able to have the same setup all the way down the ground without breaking your back while your in there. I’ve searched the internet and haven’t been able to find a tarp with doors these dimensions.

    • @sigma3survivalschool
      @sigma3survivalschool  3 года назад

      @@Akkfbdui384hj wider sides would just make it more difficult to setup in other ways and make it a larger wind catch. There are companies that make custom tarps. In fact I think that Warbonnet does custom tarps. Check their website. Pretty sure I saw that when I visited it recently

    • @Akkfbdui384hj
      @Akkfbdui384hj 3 года назад

      @@sigma3survivalschool Agree to disagree I don’t see it being that big of a hassle to set up if it had a couple extra feet on each side 🤷🏻‍♂️. Also, unfortunately, when Warbonnet says “custom tarps”, they are referring to you being able to choose fabric type, color, tie out point options, etc. The width is not modifiable ☹️
