  • This video is demo outlining the process of dry point etching and printing from my home studio.
    Supply list:
    Plexiglass - cut to the size plate you want.
    Your Image - either a drawing or photo.
    An Etching tool - This can be any sharp object to scratch the plexiglass, I'm using a diamond tip etching pencil in this demo. I've used a pottery tool in the past as well as an Exacto knife.
    Black paper or cardboard, this is optional but a helpful tool that I used to see where I've etched
    Paper towels or an old newspaper - used to. keep your area clean, apply the ink, and remove the ink.
    Rubber Gloves
    Intaglio Ink - on this demo I use calico safe wash ink.
    Inking Stump - DIY video here: • DIY Inking Stump from ...
    Pre- dampened heavy Printmakers paper or watercolor paper - I spray each page with water and stacked them between damp folded newsprint to keep them moist and ready for printing.
    In this demo I use an etching press to print.
    Thanks for watching.

    I was today years old when I learned about dry point etching. Now I want to try it! Your prints are lovely, and thank you for sharing how to print without a press (in one of your other videos). What thickness of plexiglass do you use? Thanks! ❤

      I use recycled plexiglass from old ikea frames. They are thin. You can use thicker plexiglass but will have to round and burnish the sharp edges to prevent it from cutting your paper.

    Your video inspired me to get back into dry point etching. Thank you for sharing your process and making me feel like I can achieve similarly beautiful results (oh, the delusion! 😂)

    Looks very good. I must try this out.
    How to create printed color areas on such an etched print? With relief printing blocks?

    • @starlustudio1498
      @starlustudio1498  Год назад +1

      Yes, relief printing would work. I sometimes use watercolor and other media to colorize my work as well.

    You should use ink to see what you've etched without removing the sketch. You can remove it after with water or lamp oil - if using oils.

      It's a Dick Blick 1267 Etching Press. An old friend gifted this used one to me and I am so happy to have it!

    Thanks! That’s very interesting! How many copies can be produced from matrix?
    And is it possible to use matrix after printing? Cause I have feelings that paint will stuck in matrix.
    Thanks)

      I apply new ink every time I make a print. The plate is gently cleaned with soap and water removing all the remaining ink when I’m done printing.
      I print in small batches and haven’t tested to see how many prints I can get before the plate wears out.

    This helped me a lot to move forward to etch my illustration. I noticed you just use a paper towel to rub the ink in. Do you ever use tarlatan? I took a few workshops that introduce me to akua inks. The inks you used are easy clean up with water? Thank@

    • @starlustudio1498

      I haven't used tarlatan yet but would love to try it some time. I have used Akua inks and they are fine but I prefer the Caligo Safewash inks when I print. It's just a personal preference. They wash up with soap and water.

    Hi, what if i have white plexiglass

    • @starlustudio1498
      @starlustudio1498  3 года назад +1

      I think that any plexiglass that can be scratched (etched) can work. Since I don't know what your white plexiglass looks like I can't say for sure. You may need to use a different method of design transfer to render your image onto the white plexiglass. Carbon paper might work. Also, If your plexiglass is thicker, you may need to file the edges down so it won't cut your paper when you print.
